Don't mix up usability, polish and user interface with marketing. I am a geek, developer for the last 20 years. I am fully aware of the technical differences between iOS and Android. I run Linux at home. At the moment I program in C# at work. I program every evening/weekend in Java. And yet, I have an iPhone. And trust me, I've held a lot of Android phones, from friends, family, from testing at work, from testing websites at home. The iPhone has an ecosystem that is *much* more polished, consistent and just plain coherent than Android. BTW, with which Android are we comparing with iOS this week? And one of the key difference is already out of the bag.
IMO, the only line of Android phones that could be compared to the iPhone are the Nexus one. The rest is Android either on crap hardware of under a layout of shit making it either unrecognizable (Amazon tablets - and trust me, those people count them as Android in their calculations) or barely usable.
I have my eyes on a Galaxy Note these days. But I'll get the shitty Samsung-crapped-out android. And eventually an update or two - but just minor ones. Or I can install CM. But let's get real, CM is all well and good, but it doesn't have the level of testing and polish that Google's own does. And as soon as your device doesn't have enough mindshare anymore, no support anymore.
No, believe me or not, I don't care, but iOS is a solid platform. I does have its flaws, of course, but it's not a pile of shit under a golden layer of marketing as you portray it out to be.
This isn't even remotely the same and you damn well know it.
That's what a comparison does usually, if you don't take it at the right level. This was not to be taken at face value, obviously.
Horse drawn buggies existed for a very long time before cars and cars were seen as a natural progression of that mode of transportation.
cars were seen as a natural progression of horse much later. There was resistance, as usual.
The fact we measure engines in horse-power to this day is a testament to that fact.
Huh? Is that even remotely saying anything other than people needed a way to compare those two very different things?
Tablets could be seen as the next phase of computers, but the fact remains they are not as useful for many purposes as real computers are.
Who said they needed to be? Who said they would replace computers or phones? They're a different product category, that's all.
Whereas with your car example a car completely and thoroughly replaced all functions of a horse drawn carriage in its entirety.
I don't believe you mean that seriously. For a farmer, it takes a hell of a lot more than one car to replace what a horse could do. "completely and thoroughly replaced all functions" indeed.
Your answer is almost right, if only it didn't ignore the fact that 98% of the world uses MS Office and thus the burden of being interoperable falls on the shoulder of the new party - here LibreOffice. From a moral standpoint, I wouldn't know who is right or wrong (although I have an idea) but from a practical standpoint if the interoperability is broken, MS doesn't give a damn while it is a major issue for LibreOffice.
Interacting with users that use MS Office is a PITA. The import/export is functional but barely and will screw up stuff on a regular basis for both word and excel files. And it doesn't support plenty of "advanced" functions of both word and excel. And you will see a gazillion dialog boxes telling you that MS file formats should not be used.
You realize that all the complaints you have were also true in the good old days of IE3 and NS3? Since then, lots have changed, but all that has changed is irrelevant to all of your points.
Why do people who don't believe in christianity concern about what christians think or do, there are only two reasons why, one is that God is tugging at their heart and they are not ready or either that they are full of hate because profanity always comes out of their mouths when it comes to christians. Why would they waste all of their precious time on answering something about christians when they don't believe anything about christians or God. No one is I assume is trying to convert them to christianity.
Why would they waste all of their precious time...
To enlighten our fellow human beings? Religion keeps them in the middle age and we'd like to show them it's now 2013 already. I know the concept that non-christians may give time to others (for no personal gain) may sound alien at first, but believe me, it's out there.
Also, because we believe religion is a disease and we'd like to do our share to cure humanity - however small that share may be. We're now talking about a smaller subset of atheists, granted, but I believe it represents most of us.
Only if a fanatical nut force them down my throat. The name of God may be muttered in the process, but believe me, if He existed the world would not be the mess it is. Or maybe He's sadistic. Go figure.
If you live by the Romans 12 (whatever that may be) fine with me. But why carry over the rest of the big book? It's mostly useless wouldn't you say?
As far as letting your kids be brainwashed, I'll respond that it's your responsibility as a parent to teach your kids those values. It's not the responsibility of a priest.
You seem to confuse the values you live by with Christianity. Not being Christian doesn't mean you can't live by them. They are two distinct things, even if Christianity use those values.
The only worthy goal of Christianity - if any worth can be found in it - is moral guidance. That's basically an assumption that people cannot decide for themselves what is good and what is bad. If anything, it gives the wrong message by letting herds of people not think about these issues and accept the word of the church as truth. I'd rather have something pushing people to think by themselves. Everyone will get out winning something out of such an approach, no just the "moral leaders" as with the religious approach.
Christianity is also ridiculing itself (discrediting itself if you must) by preaching the belief of a superior being that is pure invention and frankly speaking quite childish.
The problem lies in the book IMO. It is so full of inconsistencies and vague things that you literally have to give some meaning to it otherwise it is glaringly apparent that nothing makes sense. So yes, the interpretation that people make of it are the problem, but the book cannot be taken literally, so it forces people to make assumptions. In other words, there is so much information in the book that yes,you can read anything from it. It means the S/N ratio of the book is extremely low. It is worthless.
If you re-read carefully my comment, you will find no hate, nor any indication that I am upset in any way.
As far as disproving the Bible, you know as well as I do that it"s impossible. You cannot prove something doesn't exist. For example: try to disprove that Harry Potter. Hmmmm, not easy now, is it?
There will be no judgement but in your head (or by a jury of your peers if you infringe the law). God is a fairy tale, along with Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the easter bunny. Why people believe in such nonsense is beyond me but hey, go right ahead.
And no, you don't need a God to help others, you need a heart. That's a different thing altogether. That's a common argument by believers that atheists are "teh evil" because they don't have the guidance "of the true God". Where did you get the idea that nonbelievers only live for themselves? They care too. That's called empathy. Perfectly humanoid feeling unrelated to any sort of magic.
I'm just asking you to dial back the contempt a little, and recognize that like it or not, that 2000 year old book of fairy tales has had a profound and enduring influence on Western civilization. And even to entertain the possibility that its influence was not all bad.
Well, that's where we disagree. I agree that the influence of the book wasn't all bad, but I claim the influence of the book did much more bad than good. The so-called "influence on Western civilization" is little more than holding it back.
Fuck Christianity. The only thing it has going for it is that it's not quite as evil as Islam.
So that whole thing about "do unto others as you would have them do to you" is, according to you, complete bullshit and not worth considering?
Your point is so much irrelevant that I don't even know why I spend time answering it. Do you mean to say that "do unto others as you would have them do to you" is patented by Christians and nobody else should ever use it?
Religions are a mix between a set of faith and a set of values. When we say it's complete bullshit we mean it as a whole, not that every idea ever produced by a Christian is bullshit.
Grow up. Realize these are just fairy tales. You're probably big enough to decide for yourself what's good and bad. No need for a 2000 years old book for that.
VP8 is evolved from TrueMotion S, released in 1990. So 22 years, not 5. Google acquired its developer ON2 in 2010.
Do you mean to say nothing was done on VP8 since 1990 that could possibly infringe any patent Nokia has? Is Google trying to feed us a 23 years old technology to revolutionize youtube?
And I can understand why it could - in theory - matter for speaker cables. I mean, there's analog signal running through so if our ears had the resolution - and the speakers the capability to reproduce it - I'm sure it all could make a difference. Not at $50k, but still. Not mentioning our ears don't have the resolution. But power cords? Really?

So a drop in half of any company stock price shows... what exactly? I mean, other than "investors lost confidence"?
If a way is found to individualize files and rape customers for personal information at the same time
Whew... I got scared by your first sentence. Never going to happen. We're safe from rape.
This isn't even remotely the same and you damn well know it.

Posint anonymously to save what little reputation I have....
What does this have to do with news for nerds?.
Bombs are created by terrorists, terrorism is funded by internet piracy, internet piracy is big news here on /.
Um, what? Terrorism is funded by giving away free stuff?
You'll be surprised with how much money you'll have left if you copy everything for free. They're just gonna spend it on hookers and blow.
And in this case, it's just blow.
Although it's a different kind of blow you can get from a hooker.
What additional action could we have taken that would have prevented this?
Like, you know, stop pissing people off for a change.
The only way to do that is to STFU and stay home forever. Not very likely.
I'll hunt up a Windows 7 OEM disc.
Is there such a thing? OEMs don't ship install discs anymore, just a "repair me" disk with all bloatware and drivers already in. I know, I tried.

Have you tried any type of VBA scripting in LibreOffice recently?
I agree with you that for simple documents without overly complicated content it works just fine., For the rest.... Well, it doesn't.
It can always be worse. Always.
In all honesty, you should see a doctor. You've been indoctrinated probably beyond repair at this point.
You realize that all the complaints you have were also true in the good old days of IE3 and NS3? Since then, lots have changed, but all that has changed is irrelevant to all of your points.
What happened to seeing a grid of 80x25 characters on a black background? Progress.

I didn't write "fuck Christianity". Some AC did.

Some people have too much money.
But Dick Tracy wore one!
But he's such a dick ...
