That's like having your garage door closed. "As long as my garage door is closed, I don't have to worry about locking the door between the garage and the rest of the house" until someone uses a universal garage remote to mimic your garage door opener's signal.

The only difference is that VPN software or SSH is *designed* to be secure, where your garage door is just supposed to be a convenience to prevent your car from getting too dusty. The proper analogy would be to build a prison wall with one overly secure door around your house, and inside the walls let everything open.

At home I have three linux machines and one Windows with various services running on each. From the outside, I need several of them: SVN, console, VNC, RDP, file access, etc. I decided to only open ONE sshd to the outside and tunnel every other service I need through this SSH. That way, I just need to maintain my sshd secure for the whole thing to be secure.I don't need to secure RDP, VNC, SVN, etc.

Of course, when facing threats from your own network, it doesn't help.

I'm not being ripped off. No by my standard. And I'm glad I can check my emails, RSS readers, watch a TV show, browse my pictures, listen to music, read a book and take a quick pic when I need it on one device. Much simpler. Much more convenient.

I can also check the theater program, look up a contact, check the traffic, play a game, organize my todo, call someone, get driving directions with being alerted of where the cops are, see where there is a gas station around me; check the weather forecast. I can send a SMS or receive a call. I can chat. Check my Facebook status or my latest tweets. I can SSH into my production servers or at home to check something, get a file, whatever. I can check my calendar.

Saying that a lot of ACs post anonymously so that they can troll isn't a surprise or a discovery for you I hope. But AC is not one person, it is a community as you pointed out.

So no, not all ACs are trollish and as you rightfully pointed out, some of the most insightful comments in most stories are posted by ACs.

But, noone can track ACs history of posting, because you all hide under the Anonymous "account". Hence, when reading an AC comment, I tend to be more critical, because most of the time it is just a casual troll. But it doesn't matter in the end, a troll is a troll and a valuable comment is a valuable comment.

That said, I did not call you a troll unless you are the poster of the comment #39359657.

And my mistake was just to address the poster as "AC" and since you post as AC as well, you took it for yourself. My bad on a bad terminology.

  23. Re:Intellectual property has OTHER problems on Interview With Suren Ter From 'You Have Downloaded' · · Score: 2

The current copyright regime is unsustainable.

Well, perhaps that is so. In which case, legislation will have to change. You can write congress (pretty much useless) or lobby them (better, odds of success are strictly a matter of how much funding you can apply, and how widely) for change, or, you can engage in civil disobedience -- lawbreaking on principle -- at which point you need to be prepared for fines, or jail, or both, while not being assured in any way of success.

You're not quite there yet. If I want to share data with someone over the internet (say, a friend, family, etc..) I can. I just send an email, a SMS, I set up an FTP server at home, etc.

From there, using encryption to hide myself is trivial. And then, nobody will ever be able to say what I sent to my friend.

So: In the internet days, sharing data is secure and easy. The IP you're talking about is also just a bunch of bits. Therefore, I can "pirate" with my friends all I want.

That's one to one sharing. The process can be declined in n to n sharing very easily.

Conclusion: No amount of legislation or technology is ever going to change piracy. Actually, it's not quite true, but the only change will be that more and more pirates will press the 'encrypt' button. At that point, noone will be able to see what amount of the data that transit over the internet is piracy anymore.

That will suit Hollywood which will be able to claim that 1234 petabytes of pirated media are being shared every day (a guesstimate) representing 1254785214587 quadrillion dollars of lost revenue hence levying for more taxes to be redistributed to Hollywood.

But the bottom line is: Piracy is here to stay.

Now, is it the end of content creation? No. Because most people that pirate are not looking for something cheaper than the legal alternatives, they are looking for something simpler. So there is still a way out of this that will be a win-win.

They will get it, don't worry. It'll take the time that it'll take, but they'll get it. The question is: How much damage will they have done to society with their crappy laws in the meantime.
