  1. Re:what about technical support on OpenOffice vs. MS Office for Education? · · Score: 1

THere are benefits to using industry standard programs.

Yeah, right. So how come almost every single Word (TM) document I see at the office gets its formatting screwed up when moved from PC to PC. I rarely get a Word document sent to me that doesn't have some formatting problems. No matter how simple the document is. No matter the printer I choose. No matter if I open it in Word 97, 2002, 2003, XP ... there's always formatting problems. So much for the benefits of an "industry standard".

They probably will, soon - this article is probably meant to spark interest prior to the launch.

On the other hand. Just the fact that you *can* book a railway ticket in advance, from anywhere to anywhere *and* that there is a waitlist system in place is quite impressive considering the complexity and size of the Indian Railsystem. In India it's at least possible, thanks to computerization.
The rest is just down to India's huge population.

Considering the migration is from systems as old as Win 3.1 they're definitely looking at this long term.

To me it sounds as if they're using the migration as an opportunity to simplify a currently fragmented infrastructure that has accumulated cruft over the years. There's mention of Win 3.1, 95 & 98 as well as NT 4. Quite a mess to sort out.

What I don't really understand is that I haven't seen any mention of Citrix as a stepping stone during the transition. Wouldn't it be far better to set up a few Citrix servers to run those windows apps that can't be shifted to Linux in the short term?

They'd probably still need to throw a few VMWare licenses in there for those 3.1-apps that won't run in under Wine but at least they could minimize the number of VMWare client installs. The more that can be run from the server the better I say.

  5. Re:It is! on The Internet by Motorbike · · Score: 3, Interesting

I was travelling extensively in Asia between 1998 and 2001 and was awed by the incredible increase in the number of internet places + price drop. Unfortunately, as you say, spam makes it almost impossible to use email on a 33.6 line. Even accessing my mail remotely using pine I'd have to spend about an hour to just clear out all the spams.
Carrying a laptop on my second trip made a huge difference as I could just drop all my mails into a file, gzip it and download that. Sending mail was just as easy. Just gzip all outgoing mails, upload and pipe 'em through sendmail.
Typically, I'd be able to send, download and even get the NYT, /. & some other sites in about 15 minutes online.
I really appreciated how much the internet meant to keep in contact with home and stay up to date with current events even out in the middle of nowhere.
Hardest place to do email was probably Syria as they had pretty tough restrictions (in 2000) on where & how I was allowed to connect. Most internet places I found usually had long lists of proxies to use or even dialups located in Lebanon at a higher cost to the user. Compared to that, Iran and China was no problems at all. A bit slow at times and weird outages (ie bbc.co.uk) but nothing a nice SSH session tunneling to my provider's proxy couldn't bypass :-)

  6. What about active noise control? on Noise Control Stealth Tower · · Score: 2, Interesting

Seeing this post I just remembered that research is going into subjects such as noise cancellation and the like. Doing a bit of googling I quickly hit upon this faq on Active Noise Control.

Seems to me that this technology would be ideally suited to solve the problem of noisy computers.

I'd love to see Creative, for example, releasing some new hardware/drivers to help out in this area!

In the meantime, maybe I'll get myself a pair of these.
