    Nope. Mach number is your velocity divided by the local speed of sound. Altitude and temperature do absolutely change the speed of sound a lot, and therefore a given velocity is NOT associated with the same Mach number at all altitudes.

    Sure. Remember that great big orange fuel tank and those solid rocket boosters on the sides? You'll need one of those up there to bring the shuttle back to a speed of zero WRT the earth. Newton sucks, eh?

    Aerobraking is the best way to slow yourself from orbital velocities...assuming there is an atmosphere where you are headed...

    You make my point for me. : ) If these soccer moms were thinking rationally, they'd get a nice station wagon and stop trying to kill me in their Exploditions.

    To a good approximation, "gamers" benefit from 3D acceleration. If you argue that people who never render a 3D object on the screen are still "gamers", well, you're still technically correct but you're a) splitting hairs and b) talking about a vanishingly small percentage of the "gamers" world.

    In either case, you're STILL not in the target audience.

    Uh, if you don't play 3D games, you probably don't need to buy a 3D video card, do you? Just like if you don't drive in demanding road conditions, you don't need 4 wheel drive. You can't buy a video card that'll run Go or chess poorly. C&C II (I'm assUmeing you're talking about Tiberian Sun) will probably run great on any video card with a bunch of VRAM.

    Basically, you aren't the person the review was talking to. The review was aimed at people looking for high performance video cards for little money. If you don't need a high performance video card...(wait for it...)

    Don't buy one.

    If they included good manuals, you might have a point. However, the documentation I've seen for several different ISPs is simply a comic book of the install wizard. Zero troubleshooting. Zero indication of where to look for more info. Zero alternatives except call tech support and hope you can convince them that you know what you're talking about.

    If they want me to RTFM, they need to give me an FM worth Ring.

    Look at it the other way 'round. For $300 you get a DVD player, which you can also use to play some really great games. It's a killer price point for Sony...it's going to be hard to sell regular DVD players against this thing.

    It would be catastrophically uncomfortable to need to push each button hard enough to get a useful amount of work into a generator. The efficiency would be abysmal, and the cost would be astronomical. Never mind the hell it would play with your carpal tunnel...

    I go crazy trying to switch between my HP 48 RPN calculator and "standard" algebraic notation calcs. I'm sure that trying to learn a new keyboard layout would cause an aneurysm, having to switch back and forth on all the different computers I use day to day.

    I can't wait for the day I can carry around a lightweight, inexpensive, modestly powered "laptop" that can act as a console for any computer I encounter, with a minimum of configuration on the "server" side. THAT would be a killer piece of hardware!

    Back on topic, anybody who worries about email versus e-mail had better have the rest of their grammatical ducks in a row...otherwise they're wasting their time. : )

    Hyphens suck.

    The REAL challenge is going to be imaging the roadway well enough to determine the oncoming hazards...oil on the track, gravel, "hey this corner's inside still has water on it from the rain this morning, better take the outside line..."

    It's FAR from just plotting the best-speed line around the course. A racetrack is a VERY dynamic environment. Sounds like a worthy challenge indeed!

    Where's the soul in a paintbrush? Or in a clarinet? Or in Bobby McFerrin's larynx? Computers are tools. Period, stop, end of story. They are useful insofar as they further a goal. In this case, the user's goal was to draw provocative pictures in the milieu of a popular pop-culture style.

    I think he was stunningly effective. I keep going back to look at these pictures...they are HAUNTING. VERY VERY evocative.

    Then again, they might not have evoked anything in YOU. That's fine...I don't like Emily Dickinson or Picasso very much. Art needn't be universally appreciated in order to be good.

    As for as your worry about computers replacing us, Terminator was a movie. It was not real. It'll be OK, I promise.

    Actually, I do NOT mean "misandristic". Anybody with the attitudes expressed above can't have a very high opinion of any human.

    It's interesting to learn the complement of "misogynistic", but that's not the word I was looking for.

    As far as non-phallo-generic language, I'll leave that to somebody else to break their teeth on. Changing all the languages (well, at LEAST all the romance languages) to suit one's political agenda is, in a word, futile.

    If you were so worried about your words, why didn't you archive them yourself? I understand the point you're trying to make, but there is a finite cost involved with maintaining and providing access to the data in question. Why shouldn't somebody be allowed to charge for that service?

    Thanks for the info. The "poor peasants" comment was a poorly thought out jab at the elitist notion that the people shouldn't be trusted with guns.

    Do you have anywhere online I could read more about this practice? I'd love to have details and numbers available to me. Does the higher murder rate involve the state-issued firearms, or are they privately held?

    My grandfather used handguns his entire life, and never managed to kill anything. Just because you don't think target shooting is an OK thing doesn't mean you're right. The framers of the Constitution also disagree with you, but for reasons other than target shooting.

    As far as your argument about Switzerland goes, do you really think a person who intends to commit murder (which is against the law) would balk at extracting their assault rifle from the closet (which is against the law)?

    I don't have any trigger happy NRA friends. Come to think of it, I don't have any trigger happy friends, nor NRA friends. As far as the NRA goes, I'd be surprised if any significant fraction of the people who have committed crimes using firearms were NRA members, which brings me back to my original point: The most dangerous thing on the planet is human intent. Guns (and the violent video games being discussed in this thread) do nothing to change this fact.

    You want to know what the least common denominator is? HUMAN BEINGS promote violence.

    As far as European gun advocacy, we can continue that discussion when you explain how Switzerland manages to not explode in gun-crazed frenzies, considering that most households are equipped with an honest-to-God assault rifle.

    Desensitization is not necessarily a bad thing. I very much want my ER doctor to be very desensitized to the grievous wounds s/he encounters on a day-to-day basis. Desensitization simply means that you are able to have rational, rather than emotional, reactions to stimuli. Seems like a good idea to me...

    Uhh, no. ALL advanced infantry and special forces teams train in "shoot houses" which have a mixture of good guys and bad guys. This sort of training is becoming more and more commonplace as military forces are more frequently deployed to accomplish non-traditional missions.

    I defy you to find a soldier who would voluntarily and intentionally take an innocent life. Of course in any population, you have sociopaths, and there may in fact be soldiers who have sociopathic tendencies. However, my (unfounded) suspicion would be that the percentage of sociopathic soldiers would be LOWER than the percentage of sociopathic civilians, due to the camaraderie that all phases of military training instill in the recruits.

    Your posts smack of somebody who knows little about the military beyond what you've learned from Oliver Stone flicks.
