but clearly, a large majority of the problems associated with new or unlearned users of computers is that they have to at least learn how to snake the pipe somewhat when they get stuck.... I think this is the humor we're aiming at -- With all of the "latest and greatest" OS's and machines, we still have people who don't understand some of the basics. And those basics fall in the realm of printing, copying, saving, etc. I think it's more of a training issue myself, due to where I work at; Everyday I see issues that could be resolved with light training. But.... management doesn't seem to want to solve the problem on the front end....
That had to give those people at home a good chill.
Imagine the scenario. A family, gathered around the TV to watch the ball drop. "3.....2....1...." and then nothing but a bright glow from the now snowy tv.
that sounds like a certain tape drive I have that uses the sony 3080XLF tapes -- it will NOT format the tapes. So, you're screwed when they get near a high powered demagnetizer (30$ for a test, boy am I irritated about that.)
Okay, still offtopic. THX is not something that is typically assigned to the media, but rather what reproduces what is on that media (speakers, amplifier, DVD/LD player etc) -- so therefore, transferring a film to a dvd typically hasn't been called "THX Certified"....
and to be really nitpicky, THX can be any kind of "Theatre" specification.:)
well, crap, I pay for cable, and I still have to watch commercials.
Should be "There ain't no such thing as commercial free TV". Even the movie channels throw in commercials (granted, usually for their movies) between movies.....
I think that depends on whether you're forced to get a business account or not -- we've got an account with static ip's and dedicated access on an ISDN, and while it's not nearly as cost effective as other solutions, you still don't pay by the MB.
I agree with the Favorite Artist sucks saying. Even if the record company is "bundling", it's still the artist who recorded the songs.
Not to say I'm against getting mp3's (the more the merrier, I say....), but as stated time and time again on slashdot, if you love the band and love the music, buy the friggin cd.
heck, at that point, have a fairly low power cd-rom drive (12x maybe... maybe slower) and read mp3's into the 30 megs. No need to uncompress at first.
The only place this would suck is spin up time of the cd rom, but even at that, for quick access, it could spin up to 2x rather quickly and then when the player decided you were done messing with the track selection, spin up to 12x and fill the memory once again.
But, this is obviously not a really good solution without a playlist or arrangement of songs.
One thing you have to keep in mind, though, is that's 75G's while it's powered off/down etc. A lot of the drives say that for warranty purposes, but I'm sure it's a lot less force to cause a head crash while running.
I saw playboy and worse at the tender age of 10. I don't think I'm screwed up any, and even though I'm sure my parents wouldn't have appreciated it, they could have sheltered me from the world a little more, as you're suggesting.
I think you're missing out on something. Sure, the new board/chip may take more power than a comparable k6-2/3 system, but if you're taxing the system too much take something out. For instance, my main machine only has 2 drives and a cd-rom drive (as well as sound card, ethernet, and voodoo3) -- if you've got a decked out system, you may need a bigger power supply, but I've yet to see a motherboard that takes more power than 50 watts or so.... jeeesh...
heck, even the compaq 166's here at work (cheap, dear god cheap) have only 110watt power supplies, and they run fine.... (not that the power supplies are good quality....)
I for one don't have many intel chips, but they did add SIMD instructions, if I recall, which make applications "faster when designed for the chip", such as you said for the Gs.

Enter Dilbert....
sounds like a lock up to me..... unresponsiveness, that is.

ahem.
DVD players could be "THX Certified"... but the DVD's in and of themselves aren't.
Of course, if the DV disc was cert'd, you'd gain nothing by playing in non-cert'd equipment... but that's not the point.

and for the scottish version of mini-win, you happen to get either:
* Fat Windows
or,
* Bastard Windows
*p.s. no offense to the scottish... BTW, if it's not scottish, it's CRAP!
and I'll bet they'll pass part of the 7.5 mil on to us, the consumers....
*shrug*
k6-2 450
128 MB pc-100
Voodoo3 3000...
Okay, it plays acceptably... but in high traffic, it's 12-15fps, highly unplayable (me + 3 or 4 bots)...
time for a better fps... hmmmmmmm, 1gigahertz Athlon?
mmmm....
Flame?
AMD Athlon Chips may outperform the Intel at FP, but I would have to say, in q3 my amd k6-2 450 sucks......
BROWN? ick.

doesn't take much to make me think of the Holy Grail....
then why post anon?

WHERE??? e-mail me karnal@excite.com.....
guess you better not live near the highway, you might get run over.
Better not live near trees, might get squished by one in a windstorm.
Better not live near a river, it might flood.
Better not live on land, oops, earthquake....
Everybody's gotta live somewhere. Have a little compassion for those whom you call ignorant.
dear god...
how about "-1...laugh out loud at a tragedy"
I just about lost my cookies...
"Attempting to be deceptive and trying to get attention through gullibility".
Sounds like a joke to me.
