  1. Even TCP/IP isn't "standard" or to the spec. on How Are Standards Monitored And Enforced? · · Score: 2
Look at BSD, look at Linux, and look and Windows IP Stacks.

They're all different. Sure the actuall "communication" works, but most people claim BSD IP stack as the standard, and others always speak of the Windows IP stack or how linux is just hacked together (which is the reason many people believe freebsd is better, but that is another story).

So how could one claim in this "Standards" war of the new millenium that one group is right over another. Sure Mozilla may be standardized, but hell the linux components are changing every 2 seconds. You can't publish fast and publish early and still maintain a standardized system, chaos is NOT standardization my friend.

Atleast Windows as a product line standardized on the Windows IP stack. A win31 app works on a Windows 2000 stack and that what microsoft has kept. Sure new features have been added, but again, what is considered a standard. Is TCPIP as a whole standardized? Nope. I can't load BSD stack in linux without horkin the internals of the OS and simply just acknowledging tcpip data streams is not standards compliance (as we have all made it aware that microsoft products are not standards compliant because they change or add features).

So tell me my friend. What does standardized mean? Does it mean a bunch of overly paid fat asses sitting around and deciding our future or does it mean the acceptance by a consumer or product group that is widely used and established and commited? Sounds like the sitting around doesn't do jack, yet the people building a stable product such as the BSD stack or the MSIE browser or the Mozilla Browser or the Posix standards actually get work done.

So in slashdot world, conformatiy is standardization, and being unique and innovating is illegal and antitrust.

Project ODIN is the PE to LX converter that allows Windows 95/98/NT binaries to be converted or ran natively on OS/2. There is a new SB Live driver that has been ported from Linux that also created a new library and code to allow OpenSound modules to be used in OS/2. (FIlling in the sound card gap) and alas there is a small passthrough driver that makes WinOS2 think you have a SB 16 installed so that no matter what soundcard you have as your OS/2 driver you won't have to find those tricky "WinOS2" drivers.. just use this "passthrough" one.

On another note, Papyrus 8 was just released. It really is a nice tight/integrated "Office" suite that still fits on 3 floppy disks (yes it does hehe) and PMview 2000 is coming out with a new version.

The most interesting note is the integration of Warp Server E-Business codebase with that of OS2 Warp 4. This was done through Fixpack 13. If you upgrade to Fixpack 13 your not limited to the 528 megs addressable space anymore, you have the 32bit KEE extensions for 32 bit filesystem driverws (such as jfs) and there are many more updates and new addons available.

On top of that a great company called scitech has released video drivers for TNT, TNT2, Geforce, 3dfx (all versions) and Matrox (all versions) cards that make the graphics fly. OpenGL and MGL acclerated support are available as well. (i believe the url is http://www.scitechsoft.com for this company).

As well as having the fastest Java implementation around, one of the best Dos/Windows and OS2 environment easiest to port to platforms, i don't know why ibm would kill it. The device drivers are there, the end users wishing for a new version are there.. and why would they continue to add 32 bit BSD based ip stacks, SMP and server related systems to kill it a measly 12 months from now?

Interesting indeed, but as usuall looks like a laywer and a business need to review this "Future plan" for OS/2 and see what it really means. I can't see IBM telling a bank to redo everything in java when there is NO support for java other then stock tickers and web page games..

And boy howdy, how sweet of a development platform Visual Age C++ 4.0 for OS/2 is once they iron out the bugs.. use the Open API and your app will compile under NT as well.. woah, offer a choice who would have ever thought of that!

The "Evil Empire" is now found guilty of marketing to a naive market, and now the AOL empire is going to be prosecuted for catching the other end of the Naive market???

SO were just going to sue *everyone* because they don't know better? Or because they think they have rights to be in business even if people don't want there goods and services??

That may be a bit off the wall, but so is this article. Who is slashdot or even ourselves to judge the 22 million people who appreciate AOL for the simplicity it offers

And most of all, why is AOL wrong for supporting Windows???? After all it *IS* the defacto standard UNTIL something better comes along that makes it easier and fundamentally more intuitive.

You people spend too much time bickering instead of deciding. There is no assembly of truth to operating systems and media giants. If there was to be a breakup, i'd still consider Cisco because they're practically the backbone of the internet, i'd still sue Bell Atlantic more so then AOL.

Everyone has there interests to protect the market they have cornered. And its lawyers and politicians that YOU vote in and YOU higher that give them this right. Laws or not, its YOUR decision and just because people are naive and want simplicity DOESN'T mean they're stupid nor does it mean a company should do whatever they can to refocus on linux because its better.. If it was better why are 22 million people NOT using it?

On the other hand, had this article not even brought up linux i would have considered it as being sightfull. But it plainly turned out to be dumb as Linux is NOT the reason AOL or Microsoft should be change. the Consumer and market is the reason. Had the market been fair, linux could have ousted Microsoft and AOL within a very short time span.. but nope.. we hire more people to make more laws or we just try and break the laws and bicker about how pointless they are.

either way, the linux people are playing just as shamefull as a game as any other business. Overly priced stocks, no profits, .com fever, network appliances, how many times can we reinvent the wheel? If microsoft wasn't innovative then why are we trying to duplicate the features? I would have thought linux would have engineered and new and improved way of computing.. but nope.. we sue or get the government to do it for us.. and now were looking at AOL for our next target.. NICE.. i'm proud to be an american, where atleast i know i'll never have job security no matter how productive or influential of a business i work for.

PS: I don't work for AOL or Time or Microsoft, but if i did, i'd be pissed if the government decides to take away what i worked so hard on for whatever reasons. (monopoly or not, you ARE talking about HUMANS with Respectfull JOBS and CHILDREN and FAMILIES TO FEED)

I for one, USE linux. Let me say that again. I USE LINUX. and I also Use Microsoft. I don't consider them the Evil Empire, since in my time with computers i have used other OS's such as OS/2, FreeBSD and Solaris and for the Desktop *I* chose to run Windows.

I don't understand how people can pick at microsoft for writing the OS and the Applications. After Microsoft will sun be next? Will they have to split the processor division from there OS division? Doesn't that give them unfair advantage in the market? Or is it because the consumers who don't know about Sun and other Systems out there don't think to sue them too?

Flame me all you want, slashdot is about opinions and not about whats right or wrong.

But my opinion is, let them exist. Let the CONSUMER Choose. NOT a lawyer. I feel you are doing the BIGGEST Injustice by making my choices for me in court. Microsoft has NEVER prevented anyone from making a compatible system, had they done that it would have been anticompetitve. But simply existing without anything better or no one stepping up to the bat does not make microsoft an evil empire.

Sure some of you don't like the "Windows Tax" when you buy a new PC. But for the average consumer, why would they want to go out and choose something else that there friends or neighboors don't use? Why would someone want to choose something that is Niche when they can choose something that is a standard? Sure it may not be an OPEN standard, but gee golly sir when i go to the story and there is 400 games and 1000s of applications i can run on my computer. THAT IS A STANDARD!

I would feel sorry for the thousands of employees, the foundations that Gates supports, the 5,000+ college students that could loose scholarships, the grants and donations to the city and areas of which microsoft works (redmond receives lots of support from microsoft).

I'd feel sorry for all the ASP's, Developers and people who make a living off software because that is what the chose.

You have always had a right to choice. I'm just curios why you think it is YOUR right to make my choice now?

SGI, Sun, Sparc, Alpha, Mac, Amiga, RISC OS, RS2000, Aix, FreeBSD, NeXT, DOS, Novell DOS, CPM, TRS 80. They were all your choices. You chose a PC witch Built its foundation in Windows. You didn't Choose a 10,000 dollar Sparc to not run Solaris on it, so why should it be any different here. Like i said, Sun will be under the radar next, hell RedHat could get sued for anticompetive faults with Microsoft coming up and saying they're dumping there product for free to saturate the market.

I believe the rights of the consumer belong to the consumer, not to Hypocrites, people who are anal about things (fuck you to people who will pay more attention to my spelling rather then *MY* opinions).

Like i said, i use linux. I run HP-UX systems, i have a few dozen Sparcs, and yes i have 250 Windows Workstations on the floor and yes, i have a few dozen linux workstations. So yeah, as an educated consumer i know what fits MY bill. And my employees know what fits there own. So let it be.
