  1. restlessness ofcourse.. what job doesn't do that. on The Dark Side of IT · · Score: 2
To start things off, i dropped out of highschool during my senior year. wasn't doing good, was into other things and didn't fit in. I felt restlessness in high school because i wasn't doing what i wanted to do..

I had many tech support jobs, i felt restlessness because, it too was simply not what i wanted to do.

I've had many sysadmin/tech positions, hell i was the sr sysadmin for IDT for a while, but i quit that job. Cause of restelessness and stress. I worked lots of hours, the drive to New Jersey sucked, and they were completely and totally understaffed. Which, cause me health problems, stress, and ofcourse restlessness..

I'm back in small company, with great people, doing the same thing i have done for the past 8 years, making full beni's and a nice 60k a year
    salary.

best part, no restlessness.. ofcourse i get mad hours, i'm the admin of the network. its my baby, and my responsibility. but i think the whole stress factor and restlessness issue is management, money, and people... money has *ALWAYS* been a problem, working for small isps, you don't always get your paycheck on Payday, doing contract work, they often dispute one thing or another, working for small startups (99% of the internet is small startups or was within the last 10 years) they often don't have the capital, the time, nor the people.

so my point is, make yourself happy, choose a nice place to work. and don't jump into anything. If you don't know how to install solaris, Don't put that on your resume, because the second your told to install solaris, your SOL! that goes for anything, if you don't know BGP4, don't add it.. make your life easier before you make your bosses life easier and set your limits..

I've learned through some hospital bills, several jobs and years of experience what i can and can't do, and i think that governing yourself is the major factor in the amount of stress you create for yourself..

  2. Its a wonder it works.. on Voices From The Hellmouth · · Score: 1

Well, i must admit. High School was interesting. I'm 22 years old now. I work as a Sr Systems Administrtor for a web company, i've done contracts for bell companies, internet companies and all sorts of mad crazy jobs. I can admin, i dropped out of high school. High school was pointless. I just wanted to do what i wanted to do. that isn't sports, that isn't theater, and it wasn't math or english either. I wanted to use my mind and my computer and school didn't help that or reinfoce that at all. I basically just skipped class, went out and partied, got a job and did my own thing. If i stayed in school i had to deal with people harrassing me for whatever reason it is.. I find it kind of ironic that now since i'm making alsmost 6 figures i'm "da bomb" i don't have any problems and i'm socially acceptable. But i find most of my friends soon after ditching me because i work a steady job and i do things to improve my skills. I'm a computer nut, i have messy hair, i wear strange clothes, i have piercings, i've been through mo hawks and shaved heads and combat boots to addidas.. but i'm not a bad person. i have different needs, different tastes and different styles. Just because i don't conform doesn't make me evil. and just because i'm unique doesn't mean my parents did a bad job. this is the 90's baby, its almost the year 2000. people should get there asses out of the head and solve the problem rather then wonder what it is.. obviously its 1) GUNS 2) People and 3) Society. Its not games, its not music and its not freedom. its everyone thats taking those rights away from us that are causing these issues, not the people listening to it. Its differences in people and the ineptness of one another to work together that causes this. Screw unions, screw religion, screw society.I am my own self. and i believe in myself. and just because i don't believe in your god or your beliefs doesn't make me a bad person nor anyone else. Keep on wearing what you want, keep on doing what you want. Your life is YOUR LIFE. Dont let idiots and biggots take away your freedom. But at the same time, remember that we are all a part of society and that we all have our differences and that being unique doesn't make you any better then anyone else. just be fair, be kind and things will work out. don't worry about what the rest of the world thinks of you, worry about how you think of yourself and what you want in life. it is your life after all.

  3. Redhat IP.. what if someone bought majority on Red Hat IPO Rumors on news.com · · Score: 1

But you forget.. linux is a service company.. microsoft would be able to purchase redhat easily under those terms and hold majority no problem. It may be one funky battle.. but like i said.. no one OWNS linux, its GLP'd or Public Licensed. So they're selling services and CDs filled with software and offering tech support. It doesn't have to be IBM or Microsoft to be the beast to take it over, it could be anyone. But since RedHat doesn't own linux, i don't see how it could be stopped in court. Its simply a service company with a branded service.. I don't know how they get away with calling it a product, but we will see what happens. I'll just hang in for my Etoys and Barnesnnoble.com IPO :)

Now one thing is on my mind

If Redhat did file an IPO, i would assume the
current companies already investing in redhat would be the first to jump in the game..
but what if say Microsoft or IBM or Apple bought majority shares in the company.
wouldn't it be ironic for microsoft to own the baby company of the operating system thats trying to compete against its very own Windows platform?
hmm.. I would be happy to own a chunk of RedHat and i know redhat nor anyone owns "Linux" as we know it.. but filing for an IPO would enable a company with lots of money to direct the linux market in a goofy way..

i don't see the server side changing much, admins know and understand the product.. but if microsoft bought majority, slapped in some developers and put its interface on it, integrated it into its current os's and gave it out to the consumer.. wouldn't that kinda null and void the many reasons to support linux, or redhat for that matter? after all out hard work would in one fashion or another be owned by a bunch of investors and the last thing i want to see is more lawyers and licensing involved..

i should just start my own organization.. called As Is Software.. and have no licensing at all and just support truely free and truely open software.. that way if someone uses it, more power to em.. and that way technology will move quickly and rapidly because lawyers and biggots won't be there to slow me down.

I do find it interesting how in canada the work week is much shorter then here in the US and well, i don't see how you could get close to what happens here being that way.. the jobs i saw up there while browsing considered full time to be 25-30 hours a week.. pshawww i wish it was like that here. i'm lucky to be under 50 hours a week at the office (and alot more spent at home/onsite and whatnot).

while the money is good. the life of a sysadmin is busy and fast paced.. i'm not here for the money, i like the people, i like the tools i get and i like being able to take credit for building the systems i build.

i definatly say its more of a pride system, and good admins are proud of what they do and thats the only good reason we spend the many hours of our life starring into these big ass monitors.. to be able to say look what i did :)

mucho mucho isn't a techno term dumbass :) if you can't read and learn whats the point.. k7's aren't out yet.. And they will cost more then an imac costs (when you add motherboard, ram, disk and what not) Basically comparing apples to apples, an Imac is a superior machine.. k7 will kick ass, Pentium III Second Gen chips will kick ass.. point is, for 900-1100 bucks this is what you get: iMac, now available for $1199, includes a Pentium-toasting 266MHz PowerPC G3 processor, 32MB SDRAM, 6GB hard disk drive, 24x CD-ROM drive, built-in 56K modem, 10/100Base-Tx Ethernet, two built-in 12Mbps Universal Serial Bus ports and more--plus Mac OS 8.5.1 and a ton of great software. BTW - 12 Mbps is the USB ports.. and as far as speed, sure my ultra DMA bus mastering ide claims 33mbs but i'd sure as hell like to see that.. i'm not dissing your machine, i'm happy with my pc.. but i've never had problems with any mac getting new hardware to work device drivers and compatibility problems have never been an issue on any mac i've used (except for them stupid ass modems). But if you want to compare high end to high end i'll happily do that.. but for 900-1100 for a complete system with only 2 things done to setup from out of box to being on the internet you can't beat that..

  12. Sucks for Apple on iMac Factory Burns · · Score: 1

well, i disagree.. a 233/266mhz G3 is mucho mucho mucho faster then any Pentium II Processor out there.. better design, better everything..

The imac is a 900.00 computer that a. has built in monitor, a G3 CPU, 32 Megs of Ram, USB Bus, 10/100 Base T network card, 56k Modem, and a 2-6 gig hard drive..

you cant beat that in ANY OEM/FULL pc.. even e machines don't come with a monitor/keyboard/mouse/soundcard/networkcard and a software package for that price..

come on people, wake up and smell the coffee.. if you gonna diss cheasy hardware then Don't buy compaq, don't by HP and don't by Packard Bell because THEY ARE THE ONES USING SHITTY HARDWARE, by far Mac G3's and iMACS are FAR SUPURB to any 900-1000.00 pc you could ever buy at the store..

its HP using crapy softmodems and softsound cards and single slot upgrade motherboards (one free pci slot) its Compaq using Crappy motherboards and different cpu's on every box they deliver, its packard bell never building a good system

sure the lil green imacs don't have much to upgrade, but atleast its a standard.. need a new hard drive, you got the usb port, need another floppy or a zip disk, use the usb port..

but if you going for a workstation or graphics box the imac wasn't built for that.. otherwise for your price and the product behind it you can't beat it at all.

    and thats the truth!

my next pc will be an imac!
