  1. Re:Sports! on Building Social Skills in Gifted Youths? · · Score: 1

The trouble is that most kids don't think in terms of "nobody is born knowing how to catch a baseball." They think only in terms of "why does this uncoordinated goof have to be on our team."

Sticking an asocial child in a team sport he is unskilled at is a recipe for disaster. Some children will overcome it, and they will certainly be better for it, but most, I feel, will just find themselves further ostracized.

A sport where the child is a member of a team, but is not competing with the team (tennis, track, swimming, etc) is a much safer choice, and the benefits can be just as great. IMHO

Besides, do you think members of a tennis team don't congratulate each other on good matches?

Yes. I live in Japan you insesitive clod.

  3. not very impressed on Donkey Konga - Nintendo's Drumming Oddity Analyzed · · Score: 2, Informative

I am usually a big fan of these kinds of games. I picked up the Taiko no Tatsujin controller set alongside my PS2. I own both versions of Samba de Amigo as well as two pairs of the official maracas controllers. Whenever I'm near a game center, I usually stop in to play through a few songs on Guitar Freaks. And so on.

I had the chance to play Donkey Konga in the store the other day (Nintendo seems to be doing a huge push for this game in Japan--most stores had several pallets of the controllers). I was really not that impressed. I can't really explain why, but it just wasn't as fun as most of those other music games I enjoy. I'm sure the clapping feature would be intersting with two people (the commercials make sure to point out this use), but it wasn't as much fun slapping my hands against the tiny congo controller as it is drumming away on the taiko or shaking the maracas.

Of course, the Gamecube does have a lack of these kinds of games, so maybe it will be a big success for Nintendo. Don't think I'll be buying it though.

  4. Tomb Raider in Japan on Genderplay in Videogames · · Score: 5, Interesting

What I found somewhat interesting, is that in Japan, the original Tomb Raider actually received the kind of marketing (at least in its TV spots) that the author of this article wished it had in the states. The TV spots featured an average Japanese girl (i.e. not some ultra-cute girl used to attract a male audience) running around, emulating some of the actions of Lara from the game. The ad basically did what Jane was hoping--it presented Lara as a strong avatar for a female audience to identify with.

  5. Mandrake 8.0 and Enlightenment on Dueling Distros - It's All Good, Apparently · · Score: 1

I'm currently running Mandrake 7.0 and anxiously waiting to be able to install 8.0, but I've heard stories of 8 having problems running enlightenment (my WM of choice). So can somebody tell me, does Mandrake 8.0 run enlightenment (the Mandrake page seems to claim that its included)?
