Yup, I had to do that with my first LD player. (The only reason I got into LD's was the release of the Star Wars: Definitive Collection. AWESOME!!) But you can't do that with a DVD player. You MUST have connections on your TV. DVD, like VHS, employs Macrovision Anti-Copy process, but instead of encoding it on the tape, it has a bit to turn it on in the player embedded on the DVD media. The player supplies the anti-copy signal which wreaks havoc with VCR's automatic gain control, and provides a screwy picture even if you are just using the VCR as a pass-through device. LD's do not employ any anti-copy process, but they conceivably could.
> does it pause when it switches or is it seamless?
Yeah, it does. So after 60 minutes you get the last frame frozen, flips for 5 seconds then continues. On my player the frame freeze is optional. It's sorta like DVD's that have dual layers. When it switches layers, I get a screen freeze for a second.
Neither format is perfect, but both BLOW AWAY VHS!
Now I am finding LD's dirt cheap and new discs were forced down in price to that of the DVD's. There is choice now and I like it. But new DVD's with new masters look sharper than LD and don't have the grainy/blockies that the old DVD's did. But you really have to watch out with DVD's. LD's are just the same though. I bought one or two in my time that had laser rot from a bad pressing (shows up as snowy white speckles on the screen), but luckily I could return it. The "THX" version of Highlander DVD SUCKED! It even got a bad review in the latest "Sound and Vision" rag. I had such a hard time returning it because the picture looked so bad. The cashier said that I shouldn't be comparing DVD's to LD's. I thought he was on crack! I returned it after much fighting and got the LD and I'm happy. Like I said, neither format is the best, but choice ROCKS!
If Star Wars Ep I comes out on LD and DVD, I'd have to measure up who has all the extras. And get that one. With the new James Bond DVD releases there is some stuff not on the DVD's, but the DVD's have some more that the LD's did not have. I'll keep 'em both. What the hell..
> wow. I thought DVDs could handle the long movies fine. Guess not.
Not true, NEW DVD's are great! The older ones didn't have the dual-layer technology so couldn't hold as much. Good Fellas is but only one of 'em still around. I stay away from old DVD's (if you can call them old):-)
What, you mean flipping over discs like my Good Fellas DVD? And you're right. That's why I got a LD player that plays both sides. But for some reason it doesn't work with DVD's and I still have to flip them over - oh well....
I wonder if a LaserDisc edition would be released. With the good 'ol Pioneer LD/DVD player I enjoy the best of both worlds and new LD titles are still being released! Star Wars 4,5,&6 are still best viewed on LD. Why not release it on LD?!?!?! I'd buy it.
Hmm. That sounds like laserdisc! DVD like video quality (non compressed analog). No macrovision anti-copy encoding. AC-3 and DTS. friggin large multiple 12" platters. Maybe we SHOULD go back... I still need a 12" wide CD/LD drive in my PC! :-) Johnny O
This is why I still cherish both my standard and special edition Star Wars LaserDisc box sets! They look sooo good. But it is so hard to cram that 12" platter in my cdrom drive!!:-(
Now that the ATI All-In-Blunder cards work in Linux, I bought an extra LD/DVD player to hook up to it and enjoy the movies that I can't get on DVD yet.
I just wish I didn't have to hunt & peck for the programs, and then have to configure and compile! When will we get direct support from vendors!!! I don't use WinDOS anymore but to play some games! I want Linux support so I can get rid of my Wintendo once and for all!!!
Well then mrpacmanjel , can you help me out?!?! I had Slack 3.6 running on my Compaq 486/33 LTE with XFree86 on that compaq-vga chipset. I upgraded to 4.0 and I cant get it working to save my life. I accidentally deleted my old XF86Config file and am at a loss. Please e-mail me... Thanks for any help, Johnny O
I beg to differ. I cannot move to 2.2.x because specifically NFS Client Locking does not work against SCO Unix servers anymore. It is indeed broken. I have seen similar reports against DEC and Sun NFS servers. If I don't lock anything, it works GREAT! I use it for CD's and user directories. I tried it between 2 linux boxes and it did not work. One had 2.2.10 and the other 2.2.11... (I forget which one was the client and which the server, but you get the point)
I truly hope it gets fixed in the 2.4 series! I love Linux!
Ahhh yes indeedy! I like that, but.... With this challenge, they are probably scrutinizing every packet coming across to that box. Whenever it is alive that is...
We should be helping to make Linux better, not wasting time with Micros~1 products. "Kepp moving... Nothing to see here, you lookyloos"... Ignore it...
In addition to the 15 usable ID's per bus if the card and the OS supports LUN's there is another 8 per ID. Plus, you can have more than one bus with 15x8 addresses per card. I have a DPT raid controller with 3 busses and 39 devices attached to it. (HD's, CD, Tape, and yes a scanner) It is taking up only one IRQ! It maxes out at 46 devices!
Sony still makes Beta tapes. I still buy them. The quality was better than VHS but the length was not there. Also Sony held on to the rights to the format so that no one could compete without licensing fees paid to Sony. I still copy macro- vision protected VHS movies to my Beta that records 100% of the information, including the copy protection itself. I can't however, copy it back to the VHS because the macrovision kicks in. Sony Beta Hi-Fi. Works just as good as my LaserDisc player. (don't get me started on that one!!!) Johnny O

I had utterly no luck. It segfaulted in Slackware 4.0b3. I let them know...
MAN, You are lookin at some old cards!

Research before you post, man!
