The concern was that OO.o was using proprietary extensions to Java which aren't well documented and are exclusive to Sun.

Ahh, which might those be? I *love* when non-Java developers try to talk OSS and Java.

Sun going all SCO and announcing that from now on anything using their version of Java will have to pay $699 for a license is.

Right, after 10 years of Java being FREE they are going to charge for a JRE?? Does that make *any* sense? It must because you have a mod 5. But if you factor in Sun's Solaris is now FREE *and* Open Source it's pretty obvious that Stallman has a better chance of joining Microsoft than Sun charging for Java's JRE in 2005+.

  2. Why are Linux people afraid of Solaris 10??? on A Comprehensive Look at Solaris 10 · · Score: 1

Why does Solaris 10 scare Linux people? Competition is good for everyone but it's obvious Solaris 10 is too much competition on the server side and hence all the Pro-Linux comments.

As for Solaris Intel, Solaris 2.4 Intel was available ~1994 so Solaris on Intel has been around as long as Linux and is rock solid.

And if it's not obvious, Solaris is *not* a desktop OS so why review it as if it is?

It's a simple typo. They meant DVD instead of hard drive. The sentence *obviously* should read, "A PC maker, for example, would not have to equip its computers with DVD drives compatible with both formats."

Did you READ the article on CMT? The Niagra chip has eight cores that will each be able to run up to four instruction threads simultaneously. So Niagra can handle up to 32 simultaneous threads but this is *JUST* multi-core processing?!? Current multi-core means two cores each running one thread each! And the chip just tapped out. Of course competitors are *working* on something to compete. Let me know when those chips tap out.

Sun's cancelling of USV and partnering with Fujitsu was a smart move allowing Sun to leverage Fujitsu's 64bit compatiable SPARC CPU while saving tons of R&D money trying to design a competing SPARC CPU. It's a Win win situtation to me.

You also leave out Sun's Rock chip which is a higher end version of Niagra.

So Sun cancel's the USV and it's no longer in the hardware business? Intel has recently cancelled chips that were on its roadmap as it decided that dual cores and not GHz was the direction they wanted to go. I guess Dell isn't in the hardware business either because they don't design anything, CPU == INTEL, motherboard == INTEL, etc.

Who other than Sun and IBM design their own chips for their servers? In IBM's case they even manufacture their CPU's. Sun farm's it out to T.I.

Sun has been for awhile trying to turn things around and support x86 hardware from AMD and Intel as well as moving Sparc hardware into the 21st century. Unfortunately Sun is a big ship and it takes time.

Banks are moving to x86 hardware for price/performance benefits and the only UNIX currently available is Linux. So Linux really is the minor reason they are moving. Linux is great but currently has no competition in the x86 server market. I.e. AIX does not run on x86 nor does HP-UX. Sun's Solaris 10 for x86 was only released on February 1st so by next year things may be different.

The main thing is these companies are staying with UNIX, be it Linux or Solaris, AIX ,etc, and not moving to Windows 2003.

    • 100 were security holes,
and 33 of the bugs could result in less-than-optimal system performance.

Clearly Sun's Solaris does better in security and reliability in the kernel and the reason commercial UNIX's are still viable. Linux is good but Solaris 10 is just in another league.

But back to the big picture. This is not about an ad or FireFox but getting the Web back from Microsoft who by not updating IE in years is trying to kill off the web.
