  2. Portuguese already numbers days of the week on 13 Month Calendar? · · Score: 1

In Portuguese the days of the week are already named after numbers, except for Sunday and Saturday. The only bit of confusion is that Monday (segunda-feira) is Day Two, which means that Sunday (domingo) should be Day One (primeira-feira) but that would sound awful, so starting with two makes sense after all.

Wow, not only is my work on chronometers getting attention, but my Dune miniseries has generated several stories. Now if only all this attention would do something for my karma.

We've already seen a similar idea with a lightsaber here that struck me as much more intuitive. I'm not sure what you would want to control by whipping your head around. Maybe peeking around corners?

So it seems that the big businessman in option B wouldn't be so stupid after all.

I have owned a Visor Delux since March and I've had no problems with it. I bought a second one for my wife recently and the IR port didn't work. I called tech support and didn't have to wait long for help. Unfortunately we weren't able to solve the problem. I then called the 800-number for a replacement and it came the next day along with a shipping label to return the defective one. The people on the phone were very prompt and didn't hassle me at all.

Yes, I would have prefered the tech suppor tline to be a free call, and of course I would have liked the unit to not be defective to begin with, but I find it hard to complain when they FedEx you a new one immediately.

p.s. No problems with the new one so far.

Factoring doesn't have anything to do with this. This is a block cipher. It doesn't have anything to do with muliplying large primes. Perhaps you are thinking of RSA.

Factoring a 256-bit RSA key has already been done (512-bits was done last summer) but comparing RSA key lengths with Rijndael is apples and oranges.

  9. This is even more important at other schools! on Coding Classes & Required Development Environments? · · Score: 1
The attitude that they take at Stanford is this:

These are probably not the tools you are going to use in industry and that is fine. We are not teaching you a specific tool as much as how to learn how to use any tool you are given.

In addition to this, the intro classes (106a,b,or x) are very dependant on libraries. If you don't use their environment you're pretty screwed. Also if you expect help from the TAs (which are excellent) you had better be using the environment the class is.

Recently I have been helping some neighbors who are taking intro classes at the University of Utah. The level of help available is pretty shoddy from what I can see and if everyone went off and used a different compiler the class would be unmanagble.

If you already know gcc and such, great for you, you will probably coast through this class anyhow, but insiting on using a different environment is just creating more work for already overworked teachers and TAs.
