A buddy of mine just last night said "wait till homeworld comes out... you'll see people playing it for a living and selling characters for thousands." And suprisingly to me, he claims there is a yearly winner who takes home $50k in cash.
Think tradewars in 3d with a limitless universe and support for linux.
Anyways, what my babbling is saying is... i dont think we've seen anything yet in regards to the virtual character selling... thank god i dont play games much.
I think i am correct in thinking that those who are truly "intelligent" are the ones who can look objectively at the "drones" that follow each other and conform to the "norm" blindly and choose not to be that way.
If conformity is rewarded and being different is considered wrong... how free are we as a people? And therefore are countries like China any less free? We dont kill our people for not conforming, or do we?
"Is./ making any money ? NO end of the Question..."
Umm... to my knowledge, slashdot is now a for-profit website. It might not be much profit as they'll probly tell you, but it is money. Thus, this article is relevant as it is basically the same principle involved. However, the slashdot volunteers do it because they want to (no free account)... i doubt any of them care too much that their volunteer service pays Rob's rent.
The little stuff that happens over the net regarding this conflict is just that... little stuff. Another cracked website is no big deal. However, i think the email being broadcast makes a strong case for the encryption argument.
All in all, this "war" has nothing to do with the internet other than use it as a medium for communication between the outside world to and from the area of war.
The internet may be a tool of war, but it is not "the war."
Im so cyber-tired its not funny, been staring at my digital computer too long I guess. Boy, I hope a techno-war doesnt start while im asleep.
Gotta go guys, ive gotta change into my Darth Vader jammies.
Bzzzzzzzzzz... buzz words alert. Lets try and stay away from that next time ok? Its not horrible Jon, just annoying to read it on slashdot when i cant get away from it on CNN.
They pay this guy to write this stuff?
Cmon Katzy... just quit and go live on a mountain side or something. Talk to your fifteen cats about the geek lifestyle, they'll listen.
can this get any funnier?
Yes.

I respect microsoft is trying to make a buck, but they're doing it the wrong way. (closed source)
Best of luck to the boys in Redmond, their competition will undoubtedly just get more difficult to deal with until they fall into line.
Then again, i'll never feel sorry for Microsoft.
Whenever I hear the word cracker, i think of the guys who disable software security for piracy purposes.
But thats just me...
