yes, and the couch potato at home should really care that the sport he's watching, and let's not forget that it's SPECTATION that drives income in sports, not the sport itself, is not *actually* sweaty guys on a playing field?
please. like i said, there are remote control robots on three stations now; gaming isn't far behind.
but what you're basically saying is, yes, it will have to wait until we're doing it live in 3-D simulations, because then it will actually be people doing it physically?
maybe you're right, but I think that's a really, really fine line to draw.
Look at the top quake players; they follow training schedules, eat right, but they excercise their minds, not their bodies. speed and accuracy of reflex are the skills involved, and the line between physical and mental are extremely blurred there.
Perhaps *you* don't find it interesting; I would wager you don't know the first thing about organized team gaming. The tactics at work rival that of any organized competition in the world, the action is far more dazzling because it's not constrained by "real world" physics... it's only a matter of time.
But you go watch your grown men smacking balls around and jumping on each other if that's what you're into. in a few years you'll see it on ESPN 5 while the first four channels are action you'd never be able to distinguish from real life sitting there with your beer, watching it all passively on your TV.
Grow up; sports of any kind that currently exist promote athleticism only in those that compete; and the millions of people watching the game don't necessarily *ever* play it.
competitions, thus "sporting", just like chess is, except you're blowing people up and basically staging miniature battles.
Please; it's inevitable that gaming will hit major broadcast time. As graphics improve, and the games look more realistic, who WOULDN'T want to watch combat in action? It might not be real soldiers in afghanistan (ask the news channels what wars do for their ratings) but sporting focused games like Unreal Tournament, Quake and Counter Strike are all the beginnings of what will ultimately sublimate regular sporting events.
Really, what would you choose; watching guys running around with little balls, or ROBOT GLADIATORS ON THREE CHANNELS NOW, or full fledged tactical level combat action? Seriously, is there a question here?
Or will it have to wait until we're physically doing this stuff in "holodecks"? no way. Within the next 5 years you'll see major broadcast of gaming events from in-game camera perspectives... nostradamus has spoken.
there two sides to our reaction to the events that have smacked us in the face, as a country and as a westernized society:
first, our responses must of course be dictated by self preservation. Some argue that is a military response and some would argue for a peaceful settlement, regardless, that response is the first side of this issue.
however, *not* to understand why we are hated in the first place and to understand the people who are attacking us is the equivalent of burying our heads in the sand. We have angered a lot of people. They consider themselves at war with us, and it's not only MTV and McDonalds they are fighting. They are a people *we* are responsible for killing, through supplying weapons to Israel and countless regimes through the years, financial support to their enemies, etc etc. And we've done similiar things throughout the world, propping up dictators and supplying revolutionaries with weapons.
If you refuse to look at that, refuse to understand it, and refuse to acknowledge its role in our current situation, then all you are doing is perpetuating it. And make no mistake, this "war on terrorism" is not one our military, or police will win. Ask any country that has had to deal with terrorist attacks for the last half century or so like Ireland or Israel: you can only stop a few. Either we deal with the root causes for these groups declaring war on us, or we settle in to be "at war" for a good long time to come.
lots of people are discussing the economics of solar PV vs. standard energy.
Yes, if you just want to retrofit your home, or you design a standard home and want to make it solar, it's a very large expense.
However, even though the cost may be slightly greater per kwh, you can drastically reduce the cost of a full solar PV system by designing the home to be energy efficient in the first place. Use DC appliances, optimize your solar collection facing and use a myriad number of design tricks to reduce your power usage.
it semms most of us waste as much energy as we use practically. If you could be completely self-sufficient for electricity for the next 25 years for $20,000, would you do it? I spend 90 as a household here in Maine, monthly.
and the economics only improve with grid tied systems. sure you need some additional equipment, but you don't *need* a battery bank and net metering can make a large difference in the economics.
Well, you can be a "slave" to working in a modern economy, or you can be a "slave" to mother nature and have your life dictated by her whims.
WTF does owning land have to do with freedom? so *ALL* the native americans that believed that you could not own land were slaves before the enlightened europeans and their fences and deeds came by? what bull..
Freedom is all about choice, and choice you have in most things. You can move, you can buy land, you can live on the street. You can hike out into the woods and build yourself a little shack and hunt for food if you want. Slavery exists ONLY when you, as an individual, can not escape tyranny that oppresses you, and I'm sorry.. you can. the only question is... do you value the return you get from the society you live in enough to continue living in it? If so.. then that is hardly slavery is it? You make a choice to use electricity, buy computers, drive a car, because you think for whatever reasons it's better than living outside the system. Or you try to live outside the system while leeching the benefits (usually through illegal means) and that is a choice as well with similiar consequences to hammering out a life with your bare hands in the woods.
As much as I hate coporations that value the bottom line over humanity, I have no respect for those whining about slavery. Grow up, you are making the bed you lie in right now.

great idea, let's create a society where anyone with an opinion who has any kind of public recognition gets killed.
brilliant. Man I can't even believe I was a Libertarian for so long.
Man the RIAA sure seems desparate these days, fighting like a cornered animal..
probably because they are starting to realize their entire industry is rapidly becoming obsolete, and soon, completely ineffective.
Sue all you want guys, we'll trade more. Just think about it, they are the "recording" industry.. how much longer will we really need an industry revolving around "recording" things? Cheap tech replaces services, and the tech is always on the move.. when was the last time you called up your home delivery milkman? When you can get fresh milk in the grocery store cheaper, it ceased to be a viable service.
"Recording" as a service-based industry is dying, and we are watching its death struggle. Adapt or die already, please...
First off I'd like to say open source cannot be bad.. if open source project rise up to the point where the FREE MARKET decides they are good enough to compete with the software put out by giant software firms, then where is the added value of the giant software firms that you are paying for?
That is a basic concept at the foundation of a free market. If the market decides the added value of an MS product doesn't warrant its cost, then it isn't purchased. MS can then add value or reduce its price until it is competitive again.
The whole arguement of open source being bad for competition is bs.. it's bad for corporations who can't justify their existance in the face of a strong open source movement. Obviously all these people making open source code are surviving somehow, aren't they? And also managing to release free software that *somehow* meets the standards of the market.
I don't see a problem. Unless of course you work for a software company that can't beat open source code even though they are paying professional programmers to do nothing else. Don't expect laws to protect mediocrity boys and girls. That's a giant step backwards.
Finally, MS attacking the GPL is so completely transparent: obviously there is GPL liscenced code MS wants to incorporate into their programs and they want to do it without open sourcing their own software, obviously.
Sorry boys! You can't take the benefit of GPL without the downside! No free ride for you! If it weren't for the GPL you wouldn't even have it to pirate.. I mean, incorporate... so I suggest you take those highly paid programmers and actually make them code something that works nicely. Or you can take the short route and end up open source, of course, though why MS would do that with GPL software is a little beyond me.
Or, if you are MS, you can try to shape the country's laws and society to suit yourself. Failing that, you can lie, cheat and steal whatever you need. Enjoy! The options are limitless!
let's not forget underhanded business tactics and crushing opposition with illegal business pratices, or, when that fails, the might of the M$ dollar.
But hey, who cares, they are making money right? And that's all that's important, apparently.
doctors are not paid hourly and that sort of inconvenience is directly related to the level of salary compensation they get, which is substantial let us not forget.
actually, it's exactly the same. Both guns and the chemicals you can make deadly explosives with in the privacy of your own home have uses other than slaying your entire classroom, but both can do the job. And as a kid I saw a lot of these home made pipe bombs in action and they were quite powerful.
so really, where is the difference? guns look cooler? actually require aim and intent rather than placing a bundle somewhere and walking away, not staring down your classmates and intended victims?
hydrogen fuel-cell technology is already well ahead of any of the other alternative fuels, and it has NO harmful emissions, only oxgyen and water as by products.
in conjunction with a little solar, we've already answered the problems. now to make it economical:-) methanol will probably supplant gas first but hydrogen will completely replace conventional combustion engines..
first off, that you can't use heat to do work is utter crap. ThermoVoltaics for producing electricty directly from heat are in developement now.
secondly, sure, NOW our technology requires a useful temperature difference to utilize the heat flow as a viable source of energy. however, is it that hard to conceptualize of a machine of some sort that could utilize the very flow of energy across in in either direction? if such a device was sensitive enough, you could conceivably get power any time, as no two temperatures are ever exactly the same.

that's a terribly ignorant view..

my roommate has an alienware computer and it has fried its mobo twice (that being a hardware issue i believe, and not alienware's fault)
the first time, they sent him a new one and the comp was back up in days.
this second time, it's been three weeks now and he still hasn't seen the board. it's "not in stock"...

do you know that the principles are not changing? I would not be so sure, the digital system of on-off itself may be improved here..
