It matters if all HDD manufacturers don't use the same method. If everyone (including operating systems) use the same method it allows for accurate comparison.

I authenticate to check mail, so what is wrong with authenticating to send mail ? Then I could use the intended relay for any account from anywhere on the internet.

Seems obvious enough, I must be missing something. Why wouldn't this work ?

Allow only very few services and open just those ports. Probably HTTP, SMTP, FTP, SSH that's all.

Taking this one step further, only open ports for services you actually need. For example, there is no point opening port 80 if you don't run a web server.

It is amazing how much spam you can block by filtering out all mail with a "%" or "$" sign in the subject line. Another good one is filtering subject lines ending with "?". Although the question mark filter doesn't work if you are on mailing lists. These are far from foolproof, but could be used to determine the spamness of an email. Hotmail/Yahoo could work on a method for rating/filtering email based on a series of spamness tests.

Having said that, I believe that prevention is better than the cure. Especially from a bandwidth point of view.

I work for a tertiary college where IT/computing is taught.

We evaluated something like this a couple of years ago. The product we looked at was called a Reborn Card. It's a small card with a ROM on it that sits in a PCI slot.

Didn't use them in the end, we felt it was cheaper and easier to reimage classrooms of machines. Also has the benefit of being less restrictive for the students that are trying to learn about computers.

All our linux classes are run 'offline' from the rest of our network. This gives students an environment where they can play around and experiment without impacting on the campus network.

I don't see "Linux taking over at uni". Although it is certainly a threat to traditional Unix operating systems. We won't be leaving the Windows platform anytime soon unless business/industry suddenly decide to do so.

The main benefit to increase in educational linux use is that students will get more exposure to alternative operating systems. This will make them a more realistic option for the IT decision makers of tomorrow.
