I don't think most people are gonna care. They will have that "I have nothing to hide" attitude. Just like with DRM.

Until they start getting hurt by it. Until they realise they can't play their music on a portable player of their choice. Or, in this case, when they start having their identity stolen.

Then they will wisen up. But by then Cameron will be out of office and enjoying his retirement.

No need for as many FOIAs nor the infrastructure to support them. Only a fraction of what governments do involves actual state secrets or private data that needs protecting somehow.

You see this shit in other countries too, someone abuses the FOIA systems and it's used as a reason to close them down, or limit them further.

E.g. in Netherlands you can request files from your municipality, and if they don't arrive within a certain amount of time you're entitled to a cash compensation. So now some enterprising people have appeared who put in lots of very difficult requests, with the intent of cashing in on that sweet compensation money

Weak encryption, be it by using weak algorithms or blatant backdoors, is about as effective as no encryption at all.

E.g. WEP as security for your wifi. It's about as secure as an open network.

I guess if I can't encrypt communications between myself and my bank, because the government can't see that I'm not talking about terrorist plans, I should stop on-line banking altogether, and just go back to paper, as it's more secure that way.

I sure as hell won't be giving any sites my credit card details if I can't encrypt them. No crypto, or easily defeated crypto means that ANYONE, not just the "good guys" can read my traffic.

I realised I didn't express myself too well there, but I get your point. SJW means someone who shuts down dialogue in the name of not inadvertently hurting a specific subset of humanity. Curious thing about many issues in which "SJW" pops up is that it can refer to both sides of the argument. Gamergate, MRA's, etc. #notallmen is a good example of an attempt to stop discussion on a subject. And I've seen (threats of) violence used as a counterargument by both sides.

Hence I think it's about as meaningful as "troll". The same tactics are used by those on all sides of an argument.

You can strive for social justice without doing that, MLK and Gandhi are examples of that. Both also pissed some people off, doing what they thought was right, and they got murdered for that.

Violence or threats thereof are a bit of an admittance that someone doesn't like what they're saying, but has no counterargument, and resorts to this out of desperation. It does indeed shut them up. But the murdering side of the discussion then indirectly admits not having a good argument anymore, and is therefore effectively the losing side of the argument. Bonus: You also create martyrs out of the victims.

MLK and Gandhi were SJW's. What I do like about the term is that I have a plugin set up that replaces "social justice" with "skeleton" and it makes for some amusing reading. Similar amusing replacements: cloud --> butt, cyber --> wizard

Food will stop being scarce if we stop eating so much meat. And maybe learn to eat insects. I suspect energy will no longer be very scarce either, with the developments into safer nuclear power (maybe even fusion? I can dream...) and traditional renewables like solar and wind.

Can we autoban anyone who uses the word "SJW" ? It's about as meaningful as the word troll, in that it means "someone I disagree with" except SJW is a bit more narrow, pertaining just to social issues.

Why don't Sony make it possible for people to run their own server? Then there is no issue if Sony doesn't want to keep funding server space for multiplayer. The fans will solve the problem themselves. This is not ideal, since we're talking about a console not a PC. And even in the case of TF2 there needs to be a central server that keeps track of who bought which hats and gained which stats, because if you can run your own server and set your own hats for free, why would anyone shell out money for them? Oh by the way ever tried to sell your steam games? It's just as bad as this crap.
