    that's exactly what it is
    most of the internet today was invented in the 90's and those ideas were too far ahead of their time and they were really new ideas
    by the time tech improved to where they can be used in a product, the companies selling the product suddenly didn't want to pay for those ideas

    the point of patent law is to tell the world exactly how your idea works so someone can reverse engineer it with some improvements

    say you invent a super absorbent material that can you be used in diapers and lots of other things
    you can't sell it as a standalone product because it's designed to be PART OF A PRODUCT
    and you don't want to pay a lawyer or spend months haggling deals with different companies or worry about suing people who rip off your idea
    so you sell it to intellectual ventures or some similar company, get paid and go on to invent something else

    meanwhile the crazy OCD geeks who have mental issues about controlling everything will rant about you on the internet how you are supposed to be handwriting the licensing contracts yourself for the hundred companies you might license a patent to

    you're only a patent troll when you invent something that's part of a product people like and the giant megacorp took your idea from 15 years ago when it was ahead of it's time and decided not to pay you. but since people want that feature now and want it for free because now its obvious, you're a patent troll

    some countries like the USA tax all the worldwide income of a company like apple and google
    its impossible for any company to be in compliance with the law in every nation they operate in if they have to pay 30% taxes on all of their worldwide income to each of a half dozen countries

    verizon hosts a lot of CDN's that compete with their tv service
    itunes, vudu, hulu and at least half a dozen others. i never hear of any problems with them, except for netflix

    and that's because netflix has a history of finding low ball bids for their business who then refuse to upgrade peering connections to deliver the content they agree to deliver. and netflix used to use a CDN until last year when they tried to push their own onto ISP's without paying for it. like every other CDN who pays ISP's for access, power and other costs

    netflix screams network neutrality to get preferential access for themselves

    this doesn't prove anything

    verizon and every other ISP will have multiple peering points with different network, with each one routing different kinds of traffic and having different rules
    using a VPN just means your return traffic is being routed over a peer that isn't congested because netflix sends all their data over the congested peer

    except DSL has always been a shitty tech
    you have to be within range of the CO, have newer wiring, and the farther out you go the slower the speeds
    they will advertise a max speed like LTE, which you will never see because of old and crappy wiring and people "far away" from the CO because the wiring twists and turns underground

    i've read that they kept their ARM architecture license. one of the few good licenses where they can make their own CPU and instruction set as long as it's compatible with ARM. like apple and qualcomm. not like the regular licenses where you simply manufacture whatever ARM designs with minor changes
