Where's my Visio support? Same thing for OS X! As a network designer/implementer I absolutely require Visio support, and converting to 2003 compliant XML files doesn't count.
"This research project examined the supposed left orientation of media personnel by surveying Washington-based journalists who cover national politics and/or economic policy at US outlets."

Jabber servers typically support add-on gateways to the major IM providers. Have one Jabber account and you can easily message all of your friends.
Why use it? It's open, it's standards based, it's extensible.
I like it because you can SSL encrypt your sessions! Sure there are other encryption methods on the other IM services, but can you trust them?
And yes, I use Trillian and encrypt also, which works pretty well on AIM.

If the base station is mobile I could let my kid (10 years old) run free in the park and know if he's being abducted.
I can know if my car is being stolen. It's rare that I'm more than a mile or two from my car. Poor man's Lojack.
