  3. Is the problem discrimination or population set? on Almost Half of Tech Workers Worry About Losing Their Jobs Because of Ageism, Says Survey (siliconbeat.com) · · Score: 1

I've always worried about age discrimination as well. But that's because I don't often see any software engineers in their 50's and 60's. Is the issue that companies aren't keeping or hiring older people or is it because there are fewer people of that age grew up around computers? When I was a kid I was monkeying around with a Commodore but few people even my age were doing that. What about people 10, 20 years older? It wasn't even an option for many of them.

Plus, most companies I know are so desperate for a competent software engineer that they can't be choosy. Much like the argument about why there aren't many women software engineers I think it may be more a problem of availability rather then discrimination. (Just my opinion)

I think he's right.

The answer is simple to anyone who puts any critical thought into it. You buy a used phone that's one year old and sign up for a pre-paid plan. If you want the new shiny, lease, but I like my new shiny in the form of currency in the bank (or invested properly where it turns into more shiny). I like buying things that go up in value, not down. So I drive a $2000 (reliable) car and use a 3-year old phone. I'll replace either one when they stop working.

Any good financial adviser will tell you to pay cash for everything and never lease or borrow money for anything with the exception of your house. Despite what people may tell you, when you have no payments for anything, it's real easy to pay cash for things, even cars.

    • Anything Frontline. Specifically, Sick Around the World and Sick Around the US talk about health care before the ACA. The Retirement Gamble covers how many 401k plan's fees are so high they soak up all the growth.
    • CGPGrey on YouTube. I think he's a former teacher and has a knack for explaining things in short 10 min. clips. Covers all kinds of topics.
    • Extra Credits: History on YouTube. They like to create fun animations to explain a specific historic topic. It's fun and informative.
    • The Untold History of the U.S. Some people I've talked to think it's bias against the U.S. But I think it's that way by nature because it's designed to cover what our history books don't cover. Additionally, I had a co-worker from Kazakhstan. I learned a lot from him on Russia's perspective.
    • Maybe Ben Shapiro. He was recommended to me by a friend. I'm still up in the air on him. He's conservative but makes good arguments that are hard to ignore.

  15. Where I live (Republican Utah) most the people I talk to don't disagree that global warning is happening. It's hard to hold a straight face and not get mad but that is there perspective.

Very few people I talk with don't believe in evolution. They believe that evolution was the tool god used to create humans. Because genesis was written before we had a decimal based numbering system the authors were incapable of understanding large numbers, like 4.5 Billion years.

You can criticize these people all you want, but I see people trying to explain how science and religion can both be true.

I live in Republican Utah. I have meet people who think it's not as bad as "they" say or that companies shouldn't be restricted because we can't compete with China because of those restrictions. We're losing jobs since it's cheaper to do business elsewhere.

I try to explain that health care benefits and labor costs have more to do with why it's expensive to do business in the U.S. Taxes might also be a reason, but I'm no tax expert and I don't trust big media or politicians to weight in on it.

As for China polluting they just opened up this solar plant: http://www.sciencealert.com/th... That's a lot more then what we're doing here.
