The problem with all of the arguments here on/. is that these companies are literaly fighting for their existence. If Napster continued in existance and gained a few orders of magnitude in popularity it could quite realistincally put many of these music producers out of business.
This is, of course, if you ignore all those studies that suggested that people who routinely downloaded music off of napster actually bought more CDs.
Easter eggs and the cheat codes that Gameshark uses are two different things.
Easter eggs are intentionally put into a game by a developer. The cheat codes used by game shark are simply a way of finding out which adresses in the RAM hold what particular values, and changing them, for example the address that keeps track of how much gold I have, and changing it to a maxed out value.
I'm just wondering how this qualifies as "asinine, faux-intellectual adolescent bullshit".
The points he makes are interesting (in this article anyway) and true. Yes, other countries do infact use software and control centers to deny their peopel freedom ot access information that the govenrments themselves find distasteful.
Yes, there are american software companies that wirte teh software that makes this possible.
Yes, the notion of censorware is fundamentally at odds with the our notion of freedom to access (almost) any information we feel we should have access to.
Just because you may disagree with previous articles, or the opinoins (or facts) presented therein, that doenst make the points made any less valid or truthful.

Actually, there is a darn good use for these sorts of things. Its called a Gif-Pipe, and it can be used by dynamic sites to submit and resend data from the browser to the server, without the need to refresh the page.
This can result in better control over session timeouts and logins, help manage form submissions much better (e.g. a database driven form that can change as a user fills out information, again all without refreshing the page, proactive data processing and validation, et cetera).
For a good article on usinng Gif Pipes, check out this think.
And for an interesting (if somewhat simple) example of a Gif Pipe, go here.

Why not counter with a lawsuit against the school district, the school itself, its administrators et cetera, claiming that they where negligent in their duties?
The reason (one of the many reaons, actually) that these kids snapped seems to be the constant harassment, belittling, and general torure that they suffered at the hands of the more "popular" kids. Surely the school district and the school itself has an obligation to look into this sort of thing, and perhaps even, god forbid, punish the harassers as well.
Perhaps if the school paid a little more attention to the harassment and bullying that goes on, this sort of thing wouldn't have happened.
It would seem that a more likely culprit then videogames would be the constant societal pressure these kids faced as a result of the negligent actions of the school itself.
Instead of suing video game companies (who we all seem to believe are not the cause of this tragedy), why not sue somebody who at least has a real hand in causing this tradgedy to occur?
While the article itself isn't too bad, they seem to neglect Cold Fusion (and ASP, but I hate ASP, so you wont see me running to it's denfse).
I love PHP, and use it often. its a great language. But the development time is nowhere near as fast as cold fusion. I'd take this article alot more seriosuly if they bothered to compare a few other languages.
I'm not going to argue that this may be self promotion on behalf of Sanctum, lets take a moment to consider this:
First, take into account average computer literacy. Internet use has exploded, and not all the of the people online fuly understand what the hell they are doing. Mom and Pop buying something online arent goign to go check the source code for the page they are looking at. They are going to put there CC number in and click okay. This can be said of most people buying something online. Even the geekiest sysadmin probably won't view source when he uses on online shopping cart. Additionally, the script kiddie hax0r type probably doesnt even know what a hidden form field is.
So what we have here, is a problem that could potentially effect a huge number of people, but they dont know it. Its hiding in plain sight, if you will.
Just in case there are a few of you out there who are not officially registered apple developers, or who are just to impatient to wait until you can download the developer tools (I, oddly enough, fall into both catagories)Here is a good, albeit roundabout, way to get the developers tools back, from macaddict's website:
1) Sign up for apples darwin project, and download the binary for 1.0 THis can be done from the darwin website. Off hand, I don't remeber the URL
2)Don't click on the disk image. DO NOT. Thatw ould be bad.
3)launch the Carbonized Disk Copy from the Utilities folder in the Applications folder, then drag Darwin.smi onto its window. This should mount a volume named Darwin.
4)Inside Darwin, look in the Darwin 1.0 Installer folder. You should find a folder named Configurations. Inside that folder you should find a disk image named Darwin 1.0.img. Drag that image to the System Disk application to mount a volume named Darwin 1.0.
5)Grab this script
6) Get teh terminal, su to root, and run the script. Ignore the ranlib errors.
7) Et voila. You now have the developer tools, and a slighty more unstable system. ^_^
All this is available from the macaddict site mentioned above.
