More Debian-valid Software -- is this really good?

Ok. First, let me say that the only two distributions I use are Debian and Slackware. They are just what I like. My first instinct upon hearing this news was that.. "Great.. now KDE can be a real part of Debian." Then I did a double-take.
Is this really what I want?
What this means is that all of those countless KDE apps can be a part of Debian - for which in almost every case there is a Gnome counterpart. Package listings are already huge - they will surely go at least 1.25x by the inclusion of everything KDE. I'm not trying to knock KDE or QT - but having two of everything KDE and Gnome is not what I want in my package listing. Maybe it's time to set up three archives, instead of just one main one - one for non-aligned software, Gnome software, and KDE software (I realize that there are already KDE debian servers).
Maybe I'm just crazy - but I don't really want to have to muck about in countless instances of duplicate software in my dselect that I'm never going to use. There must be a good solution to this.

I have serious abilities to contribute to a major project, yet political wars such as this make me disinterested in being involved. I think if they would just settle down with each other, a lot more could get accomplished. Makes me sad.

At my university, an entire hall in a friend's dorm was blocked out of the campus network for bringing in their own computers and putting them on a network with a hub.
The system administrators here are the biggest bunch of idiots since that guy that hit his head with cheese to find out if it tasted good.
For example, a friend was in a lab and changed the refresh rate to 80 (not knowing that the monitors only went to 70.. he's got bad eyes and he says that 80 is easier for him to read). So of course the screen went skitzo (WinNT.. the screen never came back.. seems like it should have after the autotest *shrug*). The head lab guy came over, looked at the computer, and proceeded to get a ghost disk and rebuild the whole machine. My friend told him "you know you can just boot into VGA mode and fix it.. you don't have to rebuild the machine". The admin then told him that "these machines can't do that" and got pissed off at my friend for being such an idiot.
My school is not without it's saving graces, though. I'm convinced I have the single greatest CS professor in the history of existence. He's totally fscking awesome.
I have to say; People that refuse to acknowledge Jim Carrey as an actor need a good slap in the face. I have seen every Jim Carry movie, and -- Damn, he has a -lot- of talent as both an actor and a commedian. It just so happens that being slap-happy and obnoxious is what got him famous. In The Truman show, he sometimes bordered on his slap-happy character, yet at the times it happened, I found it characterally perfectly acceptable; it was at times when the character should be snapping. Now, in Man on the Moon, he has proven beyond any doubt to me that he is a Damn Fine Actor. Being able to emulate another person's humor and personality so well that (this was on an interview on NPR, the agent was on the interviewee) Andy's agent (being one of his closest friends) says that he was taken aback by just how well Carrey does the roll, is one damn hard and fine accomplishment. I just don't see, and am incredibly irritated by, people who refuse to acknowledge him as an actor, not just an obnoxious fool. -Mog

This may be an extremely naive question, but just how much Linux support is there out there for synching with the PalmOS? What sort of PIM programs on the computer is there to use in conjunction with the Visor/PalmPilot? Is the USB connection support? Infrared? My motherboard has IrDA support.. but there's no receiver on the front of my computer.. does the computer not receive IrDA like other infrareds? As I said, very naive questions, but certainly applicable to the subject matter -- I imagine that many people have such questions, with the Palmtops being previously out of most peoples' sensible price range... Hi there, I am soon getting a 386/25mhz laptop with 8mb RAM and 120mb hard disk space. I am entertaining the idea of installing OS/2 on it (I have the CD-ROM from years and years ago) instead of just a basic Linux install. Would there be a way for me to install OS/2 on it, using floppies? The laptop doesn't have a cdrom. Is this feasible at all? If anyone has suggestions as to what I could do with the laptop to make it functional, any alternative options are very welcome. I'm just looking for something to play IF's on around campus, and to type up code wherever I feel like it.
All this talk of world domination is probably the single biggest factor that makes me a bit ashamed of some of (not most of or all of, some of) the Linux population. My views on Linux and indeed all of computing in general is CHOICE. Isn't that the ultimate goal we are all fighting for? The CHOICE to not having to pay for software. The CHOICE of being able to download whatever programs you want off of the internet. And, indeed, the CHOICE of being able to purchase a license to MS Windows or MacOS if you so choose. I believe that what we are fighting for is the lack of any total world domination. If it is not, what exactly are we fighting for? Another monopoly? I believe very strongly that Microsoft should NOT be totally destroyed, just put in check. If people want to use windows, knowing it is not as stable or fast as alternative OS's, let them. I don't want Microsoft fans at my doorstep saying I can't use Linux, so the last thing I would do would be to tell those MS fans they can't use their OS of choice. Sobeit.

Don't use IE! Use netscape/mozilla, it has no such "features". I use netscape/linux for all my browsing, works very well.
