"rent-a-riot" types who don't seem to care what the protest is about all they saw was a bunch of "anarchists" trashing the place
So, the mere fact that many (2000?) chose to attack cops, barriers, etc. means that they didn't care about the issue? What evidence do you have of that? Also; a lot of the violence that occurred was instigated by cops. They invaded a building that was being legitimately used to report the riot. Cops beat people inside (it's unclear whether or not protesters turned violent) until the walls were covered in blood. It's sick that either Italy has no law preventing such invasion; or that the cops ignored the law. The day after Guiuliana was killed (shot twice and then repeatedly ran over, then denied medical treatment), the cops were a lot less confrontational and it worked a hell of a lot better.
At my school, you can't leave (please suspend me) the school AT ALL without being sick or whatever. Not even for lunch. Not any reason except for a few rare exceptions. You can't wear a hat. How dumb is that? What the hell is wearing a hat going to do? You can't be late to class EVER without getting an automatic detention (there's a lesser penalty for actually skipping the class altogether). And they claim to be doing this on behalf of the kids! I'd think that these laws will wreck a kid's spirit and cause them to not care about learning... a detrimental effect.
i TRIED it a while a go and it was hard and I thought why don't they make it easy like Windows? Windows does my Sound for me but linux doesnt and then the guy said that I had to type a bunch of stuff in why CAn't They just make it do itself or something?
Please don't be mad Because I tried very hard to use it but it wont work on my computer. I rebooted and reinstalled but it didn't Do anything.
Uniforms suck. You are forced to wear something against your own will look exactly like all the other kids. I have not heard ONE good argument for uniforms. I've heard really lame stuff, like "it makes it easier to choose what to wear" If you really want ease of picking out clothes, wear your own uniform by choice! I've also heard "kids wear the same clothes anyways". So what if they do? It should be their own choice to wear what other people wear as well as to wear something people AREN'T wearing. True, many of the popular kids wear similar overpriced clothes anyways, but making them wear uniforms won't stop them from buying/wearing them. What do you think they'll wear out of school? And I don't wear what everyone else wears; I wear very cheap clothes and I like what I wear. Can't I have a CHOICE as to what I wear? Is that so much?
$10 per cd? what the hell? My friends have a band, and they've produced their own cd 800 CDs + cases, artwork alltogether cost them $1200. Plus a bit for studio time.
And who gets the power to decide what's illicit and what's not? Looking at what's already illicit, I don't think I'd trust them... Drug War, Faith-based... ick!
Having the ability to, with one command, get a email addres, phone number, and snail mail address of someone responsible for every IP and domain on the internet is invaluable.
Kinda how giving everyone a gun stops crime, eh?
True enough. While I know next to nothing about rap/hiphop, I know there is a very large hiphop/rap underground, and I recognize that there is much more than "gangsta rap". But it seems that many many rappers sign with big labels, and many rank highly on Billboard and similar charts, while there are significantly fewer punk rock superstars.
I think the hippy/punk relationship is now like punk/rap. Punk is often seen as wussy and old. A lot of kids who would probably be punks now become the gangster folk. The music doesn't particularly appeal to me, andthe overexposed stuff is pure crap. Though I see rap as very similar in attacting youths, I dislike many elements I see (probably biased here). It's somewhat accepting the system (so many sellout to corporate support and reliance) despite their rebellion. The cops still go after them a lot and don't care about the punkers so much anymore. Much of punk is so pedestrian. Nowadays people make cute little buddy-buddy jokes about my mohawk. You've got Green Day in the doctors office today.
Very true. I like punk rock myself, and I hate the bands that use the genre to pretend to be something that they are not (Blink 182...)
Nonetheless, punk still thrives in the underground. Unlike rap, the most popular punk continues to be independant. I'm not sure about trance, but I think that is also very popular. punkbands.com has a lot of bands featured. Most people would like punk rock (I think; though I'm sure there are many people who would not at all). There are so many kinds, people need to find one that appeals to them. Ska, pop, hardcore, etc. Most people like the Dropkick Murphys, because it makes you feel included in their singing. Their concerts are a big singalong. Operation Ivy also catches everyone with their fast energetic beat.
I think many people don't like punk because they have a negative connotation, but the fact is that punk is so varied and diverse it can not even be defined. go to punkbands.com, use your favorite mp3-getting utility, and find away! There are intellectuals, liberals, anarchists, even conservatives... but of course most punks (me included) dislike conservatives and many others. Nonetheless, I practically guarantee your search will be fruitfull http://www.punkbands.com/lyrics/bands/
The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) spirit has created practically an entire separate culture. No matter what the industry does to undermine, manipulate, or use the scene, it will always be there (25 years so far), and despite how it evolves, no one will ever own it until it dies off.
different than a lot of dot.coms out there who proxied a developer's copy of oracle as a production db. How is this different than someone using a bootleg copy of Real's server to stream porn? Because they are underfunded?
Oh, come on. This should be obvious. These are companies which are making money. They are making money while not giving Microsoft any, despite the Microsoft EULA. A school, on the other hand, is not trying to make a profit. They are not getting money while using stolen goods. This is not to say anything about whether or not Microsoft or the school was wrong. Your analogies are just a bit unfair.
Radio K eh? I can attest to the wonderfulness of K. Here in Minneapolis (it's broadcast by the University of Minnesota), they only have a broadcast license for daylight hours (I have no idea about why the FCC sells those for cheap). But every Tuesday, from 10 to 12 PM, I tune in via the Internet. They have the only punk rock show I've seen. This is thw wonder of online radio. Music I truly like. There used to be a radio station, Rev105 that played some really cool underground. Then they went to alt-rock. Then to classic (70s and 80s) rock. Now it's a disco station. Disco! Is that really more popular than punk rock?
We've got like 4 of those pop stations, 4 country, 2 oldies, 2 jazz/news stations, and 1 metal station that used to play some cool stuff. 770 AM, radio K is the only station for me. And let's not forget about Rude Boy Radio, every Saturday from 10 to 12 AM. Hooray!
Actually, I think the computer age has made some people remember the powers of two (in the post you replied to). I know 2^10 is 1024 just by memorization. This is likely due to my memorization of binary powers. Without a reason such as computer for me to do this, I probably wouldn't know that. And most people still can do basic calculations; most of the more complicated math isn't used in daily routines so it's fine to just use a calculator if it suits you.
and root 144 is just... obvious.
On the flipside, when you turn on the gay porn and your wife comes bye, you've got someone to scapegoat. Not that I would. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Exactly how would the DMCA apply to this? You have no reason to believe this; you just "presume" that this is what law it violates. I don't think that taking something from a book and putting it on the Internet is in violation of the DMCA. What it _is_ in violation of, however, is copyright laws.
What I'm wondering is, with the morality taching in public schools that Bush (and many Christians) wants to enforce. I mean, doesn't the bible say that what separates man from the beasts is the ability to think; to decide. But, if we are brainwashed and told what is right and wrong, what to think, to be like Bush wants us to be, then we really have lost that ability. We become animals. True morality comes from a moral choice between good and evil.
Ahh, Clockwork Orange.
Alex:
Father, can I ask you a question in private?
Chaplain:
Certainly, my son, certainly. Is there something troubling you my son? Don't be shy to speak up, remember, I know all the urges that can trouble young men deprived of the society of women.
Alex:
It's nothing like that, father. It's about this new thing they're all talking about, father, about this new treatment. It gets you out of prison in no time at all. Makes sure you never get back in again.
Chaplain:
Where did you hear about this? Who's been talking about these things?
Alex:
These things get around, father. Two warders talk as it might be. Somebody can't help overhearing what they say, then somebody picks up a scrap of newspaper in the work shops, and the newspaper tells all about it. How 'bout putting me in for this new treatment, father?
Chaplain:
I take it you are referring to the Ludavico technique.
Alex:
I don't know what it's called, father. All I know is that it gets you out quickly, and makes sure that you never get back in again.
Chaplain:
That's not proven, six double-five three two one. In fact it's only in the experimental stage at this moment.
Alex:
It has been used, hasn't it father?
Chaplain:
It has not been used in this prison, yet. The governor has grave doubts about it, and I have heard that there are very serious dangers involved.
Alex:
I don't care about the dangers, father. I just want to be good. I want for the rest of my life to be one act of goodness.
Chaplain:
Question is, weather or not this technique really makes a man good. Goodness comes from within. Goodness is chosen, when a man cannot chose, he ceases to be a man.
Alex:
I don't understand about the whys and wherefores, I only know I want to be good.
Chaplain:
Be patient, my son. Put your trust in the lord.
Alex:
Instruct thy son and he shall refresh thee and shall give delight to thy soul.
Don't use Liberal and Conservative when referring to Democrat and Republican. People who truely fit the liberal description do not really fit into the denotation of Liberal (and I suppose, sigh conservatives as well). In fact, your Libertarian party are a kind of liberals. The Democrat and Republican party are so busy whoring for support that they don't know where they stand anymore.
My dad once told me (really!) it was because of the Saxons invading England. Before the French came, Olde Anglish had these swear words in it. The Normans conquered it and changed the language. The swear words were regarded as barbarous and outdated. Today it is nothing more than the vernacular which for some reason is a thing to silence; something the schoolteacher tells us is dirty; something you can't say on TV.
