  1. Third-Party Devs are doing a good job on Microsoft 'Wait and See' On Motion Controller · · Score: 1

The other statement he makes about motion-sensing controllers is that third party developers aren't embracing it. And honestly, that also seems like an accurate statement to me... so far all the 'killer apps' on the Wii are made by Nintendo.

Well, You need to keep in mind that Nintendo has probably had between two and four years of experience toying around with motion sensor concepts when the Wii came out. Most third-party devs got their first dev kits between Nintendo's announcement of the Wii and the launch, so they obviously can't yet churn out the same amount and the same quality of titles as Nintendo can.

But what they're doing isn't all bad, either. There are some really great third-party Wii games. Astonishingly, even EA seems to make a real effort. Check out games like Madden, Trauma Center, The Godfather: Blackhand Edition, Elebits, Super Swing Golf, Tiger Woods, Rayman, Super Monkey Ball (which I actually like even more than Rayman), Kororinpa, Sonic and the Secret Rings...

Seriously, third-party devs are doing a pretty good job right now, especially considering how little time they had.

Jobs didn't want that, though. He didn't want universally compatible music, he wanted ipod-and-only-ipod compatible music, which is why these new higher priced songs are only offered in AAC.

Uhm... I don't really know what to say, other than "I wish I could mod you uninformative." Most modern MP3 players also play AAC. It's an official standard, and a much better format than MP3.

  3. Casual Users play Casual Games on Why Microsoft Should Fear Apple · · Score: 1

  4. Burnout on Most Impressive Game AI? · · Score: 1

The enemies in this game are probably not particularly intelligent, but they do feel very human. In many racing games, enemy cars just try to go as fast as possible. In (at least some) Burnout games, though, they are aggressive and downright evil. Try to overtake them, and they'll try to push you into oncoming traffic or smash you into walls. If you're going into turns and they're behind you, they'll try to push you so you oversteer. I thought that was pretty cool and added a lot to the games.

  6. Manufacturers can't possibly satisfy init. demand on Nintendo Refutes Wii Shortage · · Score: 1

Yes but i'd think by now they'd realize there is going to be a demand.

Of course they realize that. So what are they supposed to do? As far as I can tell, they have two options:

    1. Have huge production capacity before the launch. That'sa a bad idea, since they can't be sure if it'll flop or how big exactly demand will be until they start selling, and even if the product does not flop, demand will eventually decrease, and then they will have to deal with having useless production capacity. So that would be a big waste of money for production capacity they will eventually not need.
    2. Don't start selling until you have produced a big number of machines. That's essentially what Sony has done in Europe, and it has resulted in several issues: People are upset because they had to wait longer, Nintendo has been able to sell the Wii for months with essentially no competition, the PS3 didn't sell out, which made people pronounce it a failure, and finally, had there been a problem with the European PS3s, Sony would have millions of broken consoles on their hands before they had noticed it.

There's simply no way console manufacturers can predict how many consoles they'll sell, and there's no way they can make enough to satisfy initial demand.

Yes, being "bad" is certainly a factor. I'm working. I can't play games for hours every day anymore. I really loved Mario Kart DS online when the game came out, but within weeks, I wasn't able to compete anymore. That's not really fun. Yeah, you can blame the people who, like me, are "bad" at these games, but that doesn't change the fact that most people are like me, so competitive online gaming only appeals to a small minority of hardcore gamers.

  12. Online kills Splitscreen on GameStop Theorizes Wii Shortage Deliberate · · Score: 1

Personally, I like to play multiplayer games with my friends in the same room. I have absolutely nothing against online multiplayer, but it just doesn't interest me for anything other than providing better enemies than AI can. The issue with online multiplayer is that the devs often concentrate on online and then "forget" to include good splitscreen support. Why doesn't Motorstorm have four-player splitscreen? It's the perfect party game!

That's why I bought a Wii instead. Since Nintendo is dragging its feet with online, devs are basically forced to support "local" multiplayer.

  13. PS2 doesn't matter in current-gen console "war" on GameStop Theorizes Wii Shortage Deliberate · · Score: 1

What you say is true, but it doesn't really matter. The PS2 is going to die during the next 3 years either way. The question now is, which console will be the one to pick up the PS2's torch? This comes down to 360, PS3 or Wii. So the question is, which one (if any) is it?

Clearly, it would be in Nintendo's best interest to chatch up with and overtake the 360 as quickly as possible, to establish the Wii as the current-gen leader. Claiming that Nintendo intentionally sells less consoles is absurd.

Saying that the PS2 still beats the Wii is true, but it doesn't matter, since the Wii needs to beat the 360 and the PS3, not the PS2 - at least not for now :-)

Resident Evil 4 on the PS2 is a POS, and it still made the PS2 list. Beyond Good and Evil should have made the list on the PS2 - instead you got uninspired sequels like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 on the list. There are two versions of GTA on the list, for heaven's sake! You complain about two Resident Evils on the Cube list? Well, at least they were two totally different games, while the GTAs are pretty much the same game.

Have you even actually played the Twin Snakes? It's not a rerelease, dude. It's a remake. It's basically a new game.

And yes, if I had a Nintendo dildo, I would definitely fuck myself with it. Unfortunately, I have to do with this Helly Kitty dildo here.

  15. Re:DC vs. PS2 on Why the PS3's February Sales May Be Misleading · · Score: 1

Yes, some games did receive PS2 sequels or ports, but not all of them. I'm not sure, actually... Some of the games I was thinking of are Jet Grind Radio, Shenmue 1 and 2, Samba de Amigo, Crazy Taxi 2, Metropolis Street Racer, Sonic Adventure, Seaman (seriously! :-), or Powerstone 2. There was a (mediocre) sequel to Jet Grind Radio on the Xbox, and I guess Project Gotham Racing is some kind of unofficial sequel to Meetropolis Street Racer (not sure). There's a crappy port of Powerstone on the PSP (which misses the whole point of the game, namely that you're supposed to play it against friends!).

There's a Crazy Taxi on the Cube, but I don't think the second version did appear on any other console, did it?

Part of it may also be the rose-tinted glasses with which I look back upon the DC :-)

  16. Re:Hoping for the worst on Why the PS3's February Sales May Be Misleading · · Score: 1

Yes, agreed. If you use the d-pad, the PS2 controller (while not great) is definitely the best "standard" controller of the last gen. I dislike the d-pad on Sony's consoles, I prefer "cross" d-pads, but the d-pads on the Cube controller and on the Xbox were simply atrocious.

And yes, most Cube games don't look that great. That doesn't mean that the hardware wasn't technically better than the PS2's, though - it just means devs didn't optimize for graphics. Personally, I think Super Monkey Ball looks pretty good, but that's probably more of a question of the graphics style than the quality of the graphics. Animal Crossing has very poor graphics, though.

  17. Re:Hoping for the worst on Why the PS3's February Sales May Be Misleading · · Score: 1

His statements are accurate. I own a GameCube, I have 2 games for it. There's a couple of games I might like to try, but I'm too busy playing some truly great games on my PS2 to go looking for the few games for the GameCube that don't suck.

Dude, check out IGN's top 25 PS2 games article. Then check out IGN's top 25 Cube article. Now tell me the games on the PS2 list are better. Tell me that, and I'll show you a liar.

It's quite possible to not like Resident Evil or Metroid. I have no desire to play either game.

I think you're missing the point. I listed these two games since the graphics are obviously superior to anything on the PS2. But thanks for pointing out your ignorance. Why would you even buy a Cube if you only buy two games for it and have no desire to check out some of the greates games the console has to offer? Frankly, I doubt you own a Cube.

The PS2 controller is, in my opinion, far superior to both the GameCube controller and the Xbox controller.

Well, that's an opinion. Maybe you have some kind of freakishly-shaped alien hands. I could see how you would then prefer the PS2 controller. But there's no other reason I could imagine for such a preference, frankly. The PS2 controller is tiny, cramped, and most games force the user to hold his left thumb in a really unnatural way.

And the PS2 can definitely outperform the Cube. There's one game that looks better on the Cube than it does on the PS2, and dozens of games on the PS2 that look better than anything I've ever seen on a GameCube.

And since you ownly own two freaking games for your cube, your argument has no value at all.

Look, there's simply no game on the PS2 that looks like Resident Evil 4 or Metroid Prime. That's not exactly surprising, either. The PS2 is a year older than the Cube and quite simply has weaker hardware.

The demand curve on the Wiis is dropping off.

Any numbers to back that up?

They should be able to meet demand in another couple of months, at which point anyone who wanted one, will have gotten one.

That's not how it works. As far as I can tell, every sold Wii exposes new people to the virus. I bought a Wii. I invited some pals to play. Lots of these have now bought their own Wiis and are inviting their pals, some of which will also end up buying a Wii, and invite their pals, and so on.

It's like that with all consoles, but it's especially strong with the Wii. That thing is viral. There isn't a fixed number of people who want a Wii. Every person who gets a Wii effectively infects new people with the desire to get one.

Look at the DS. No dropping of demand in sight, even though by now surely anyone who wanted one should have gotten one, right?

I would agree. Looking at the recent "Top 25 games" article for the PS2 (I think it was on IGN) made me cry inside. This is the most successfull console of the last generation, yet there are maybe 5 or 6 really, truly great games on it. Most of the other stuff is annual sports updates, cheap movie licenses, FPS (mostly WW2) and some random EA shovelware. Even the Cube's "Top 25 games" list was a lot more interesting, with more diverse and better games.

I have no idea what the DC could have done had Sega not killed it. I would guess that a good developer could get a lot more out of the PS2 than out of the DC. But nobody really did. Looking at the top games, I think the DC can easily compete with the PS2 even years after its death.

The PSP has more "big" A-List titles which obviously get higher ratings, but are often PS2 ports and almost always useless for short amounts "on the go" playing. Great portable games like Tetris DS or Brain Training tend to get not-so-great ratings (haven't checked though, just throwing out some examples), even though these are exactly the games you want in a portable console.
