There's QuickTime, and since you'll have to convert movies anyway to fit the small screen, there's really no huge need for VLC. VNC would definitely be nice, but not much more than a novelty, I think. The screen is too small to do anything useful. AIM chatting can be done using the browser. Skype would be awesome. I'm guessing AT&T would not be happy about it, but the fact that it won't run on the iPhone is a definite minus. How would you play Gameboy games without buttons? SSH can be done using the browser, and there's probably not a whole lot of demand for Firefox.

Some good points, some bad, but apart from Skype, nothing that really matters to most people.

Having used PDAs since the Newton (since then, I've owned two Newtons, two Palms and two Symbian cell phones), the only third-party app I've consistently used is ScummVM. All the other apps I installed only had novelty value. I'm guessing most people don't care one bit about installing software. I'm still hoping that the iPhone will be able to run ScummVM in some way, but if it doesn't, so be it. The fact that you can't write software for the iPhone may mean it's not worth 500 buck to you. Most people couldn't care less.

I think the iPod has clearly shown that simplicity and usability are features. People are prepared to pay for these features. Even though the iPod's competitors often offer a lot more features for lower prices, people consistently go with the iPod - because it's easy to use, and because iTunes is easy to use.

I'm guessing that most iPod owners already own phones which would allow them to listen to music. Many of these people specifically bought an iPod because they don't want these two feature sets in the same device.

And there's something else: Personally, I own both an iPod and a cell phone, and I've noticed that I hardly ever take both of them with me. When I go jogging, I take my iPod with me. I don't need my phone for that. When I go to work or when I go ou, I take my phone with me. Don't need an iPod then. Ironically, if I buy an iPhone, it will not be as a replacement for the iPod, but as a replacement for my current cell phone.

Finally, the iPods with similar price points as the iPhone offer large hard disks, which the iPhone doens't have. Different market altogether.

Kinda like how the XBox360 Core (sans hard-drive) isn't obsolete until most games that come out require a Hard-Drive.

What has this got to do with Nintendo? No Nintendo hardware revision has ever broken backwards compatibility. In fact, NIntendo even maintains some forward compatibility between console generations - Lots of GameBoy Color games also worked on the GameBoy.

Please tell me one example where a Nintendo console became obsolete because a revision of that console contained a feature which was required by games.

Ultimately, humans have free will and choose their own actions. Saying someone is "born bad" is equivilant to saying that they have been possessed by Satan. It's not a valid argument.

Even assuming people do have free will (which is certainly no scientific fact), your logic doesn't hold. If somebody isn't capable of feeling empathy, he can not comprehend that hurting another person is a bad thing. To him, it's not bad. To us, his behaviour should be classified as a disability, not as an inherent evil.

There are some coming out which you might be interested in - some of them could go either way, though. There's a new Prince of Persia coming out. I know, it's not realistic in any kind of way, but the previous Paper Mario games had pretty funny stories. Mortal Kombat. No story, but probably an M rating. Manhunt 2, definitely an M rating. 100 Bullets, not sure wher this is going, probably more shooting than story. A new FF:Crystal Chronicles. Scarface... Metroid Prime 3 could go either way, too. Forever Blue, not sure about that. Harker...

There are definitely not a lot of games in the vein of BGaE announced, though. So, what announced PS3 or 360 games are you looking forward to?

I like DeusEx, The Longest Journey, IndigoProphecy/Fahrenheit, AdventRising, Halo2, Shadow of the Collosus, Breakdown and friends for their stories and the way they present it. I however can't get those stories with "E for Everyone"-like content

Dunno, I think games like Ico, Beyond Good and Evil or Hotel Dusk actually do deliver what you want - games as a medium for telling a believable story - in spades. I have no idea what they are rated, but games like these will appear on the Wii (as will M rated games).

But yeah, the Wii is not targeted at people who buy M rated games because they are M rated.

Look up how the ESRB defines the term to get the idea.

ESRB does not define what "mature" means. They simply call one of their age restriction labels "M" or "Mature." Unless the original point was "there are not enough M rated games for the Wii" (which I think is an absolutely nonsensical point, because the rating a game gets tells you pretty much nothing about the game, other than whether you see blood, gore and tits), what the ESRB calls its labels is totally irrelevant to the discussion.

    Here's your original quote:

Currently most Wii games focus on unrealistic and stylized graphics, so the lack of power doesn't show, but then that itself is also the Wii biggest problem, since there is a serious lack of 'mature' games.

Now please don't tell me you actually inteded to say that there is a "serious lack of games which get the "M" rating." Hopefully, that wasn't your point. I thought what you said was that there is a lack of games suitable for adults, and while this would be a problem were it true, it clearly is not true.

I'm actually looking forward to Mario Party 8. But I do agree: The single-player games don't have much substance. I love Excite Truck, but it's too small...

On the other hand, consoles typically don't have huge games right from the start, and devs are still trying to figure out how to properly use the Wii remote. Having lots of minigames minimizes the risks: Red Steel fucked up the control, and that killed the game. Super Monkey Ball has a few minigames with bad controls, but on the whole, it's still a great game.

So don't worry, more single-player games with more substance will appear during the next few months. There are two golfing games coming out, by the way, Pangya Golf and Tiger Woods. No doubt there will be dedicated Tennis games, too.
