First of all, "below-market rates" in the SF Bay area does not equate to "low rent", it simply refers to rental rates that are below the uber-exorbitant standard rents in the area. Most middle-income people still won't be able to afford them no less people of limited income.
Secondly, poor, Hispanic communities do not equate to "ghetto neighborhoods" and "criminal and low life" individual. This kind of racism and elitism does nothing to promote a diverse, productive society.
Exactly THIS! Proper, stable corporate IT requires stable, consistent software. The "constantly changing" model of Microsoft's new products makes them ill fit for professional use.
Just for the record, it would be most unsettling if the person who built or maintained my car didn't know how to drive a manual transmission. In the same vain, I'm not terribly upset that my admin assistant isn't well versed in computer memory management.
I totally agree. I have a new Win 7 machine with 6GB of RAM and a nice fast i5 quad-core processor and I don't see any benefits over my old 3GB XP machine at work. What I do see is the same old Windows with a new shiny interface that makes it harder to find the settings I could always find easily in XP. There's something to be said for an OS being 10 years old; it's mature! Why the hell should I have to learn how to find and operate everything all over again? Oh yes, so Microsoft can make more money!
Yes and leave it to Microsoft to break with the age old standard that any key combination containing F1 provides online help, not access to the navigation system.
Younger folks will look at that COBOL as something that needs to go and with Bob gone, we can slowly bring that system to the 21th century.
COBOL is not still around because "old Bob" won't get with the times, it's still around because there are untold millions of dollars invested in the code and it would cost many more untold millions to replace it. And for what? If it's working fine, there's no reason to rip it out and replace it. Business is about making money, not wasting money on today's latest fad.
So glad to see this item today; I was sure I was losing it. I have an medium-sized network with a WSUS 3.0 server and the Desktop Search "update" came through a few months ago and I've purposely left it "Not Approved" in WSUS since then. I sat down at my PC yesterday morning and almost choked on my coffee when I saw that damn search box sitting on my taskbar. My PC is the only one on my network that received the update. I'm running XP and have Office 2000 and Office 2003 installed on my system, but I also have Office 2007 Compatibility Pack installed which is not on any of my other machines. This leads me to believe that it must have something to do with Office 2007.
This is absolute crap!!! I hope this one triggers someone to do something about Microsoft's ever increasing invasiveness. Something needs to happen before their greed has truly disastrous consequences.
Amen!

...what about the $15,000 servers I bought 6 months ago?

It sure would go a long way in helping to get this once great city heading back in the right direction.
FTW
Ding, ding, we have a winner!!!
Yes, exactly this!!
Exactly! I still loath and the ribbon and always will. It is an abomination of a UI element.
And Metro is even worse!

Absolutely!
Thank you. The current version of FireFox is 4. It was just released a couple of weeks ago. Sorry, but beta doesn't count here.
Absolutely! This is in no way, shape or form news. It's tabloid trash!
