I realize that there is a slippery slope here, but why can't we allow each school to decide for themselves what their immediate needs are?
So the school which is predominately protestant can use the filtering software to push out mormon, catholic, jewish, and muslim (oh yeah, and gays, and sex education materials, and abortion) sites because they got to choose for themselves? I'm just curious why kids in one school will be able to handle exposure to certain types of info better than kids in any other school. I think it is much more neccessary for those who want local filtering control to argue why their kids need more filtering than anybody elses kids. Why shouldn't there be a national standard for filtration if filtration is mandated? (I of course think that filtration should not be mandated though.)
This information should lend itself to a clear cut Seperation of Church and State case regarding the filters mentioned in the article.
If the students are anti-filtering wish to have the filtering software removed from the systems all the need to do is find a lawyer willing to take the case up pro bono as a constitutional question case.
Most of the copyright laws have been changed since Clinton became President, that's true. However, they were all passed in a REPUBLICAN congress. The Republicans have controlled the houses since the 1994 midterm elections.
The mistake that's being made today is
to treat intellectual property as a natural right, which I do not believe it is.
Perhaps you are not as conservative as you thought. Property is one of the basic tennents (sp?) of conservative values. In this day when [knowledge = money/power] it only makes sense that intellectual property would be yours for the long haul. I personally think copy rights should be held for products during the course of a persons lifetime. If you invented it, you should be the one who reaps the rewards from it.
By the way that wasn't a troll. The supreme court is packed with right wing fundamentalists, just like the Taliban, or any right wing organization. Any conservative who goes against his own principles (in recent examples States Rights were severely hurt by the pro-states rights SCOTUS judges who ruled to put Bush in office) in order to push into power somebody who is a political ally is in my opinion a fundamentalist.
I'm guessing that was a joke. But just in case it wasn't the Supreme Court doesn't use a jury to hear cases. That's because they are the end of the process. The Supreme Court is supposed to act as an oversight committee for the entire judicial system.
The United States Supreme Court is packed with more right wing fundamentalist than a Taliban prayer meeting. They are going to side with the music and MPAA. This is all a dog and pony show. "We'll take this case up so that we can set into granit that screwing consumers is the american way."
Actually being an entrepreneur could make you very wealthy if you worked hard and produced a product that was in demand. Same with having a small business...
I worked for a major game company that makes lots and lots of sports titles. Anyway... we kept on getting e-mails from our PR people saying, "LOOK AT THIS GREAT REVIEW OF THE GAME YOU'RE WORKING ON!" [yes, in caps just like that] I'd click the provided link, and indeed there were GLOWING reviews for the game. I would then turn on my PS2 dev station, and look at the games athletes who were not even finished being drawn yet by the artist, hadn't been given emotions, major physics problems still existed, the scoring system wasn't in place, no music. I realized... They rated this game completely off of a couple of screen shots.
Faking Game Reviews Is Standard Practice In These Magazines. I have never trusted a magazine game review since.
I always found the punch card stories my professors told to be about as enthralling as the "I walked through snow barefoot up hills, both ways" stories my grand daddy told me.
I agree with you. The best and the brightest would demand the most money for their time (that's part of being considered "the brightest.") Working for the government doesn't pay nearly as well as the private sector does. I was thinking about taking a coding position at a state univerisity here in CA but they couldn't compete with the private companies for my time.
Since it's public money if I want to alter, change, read, whatever with code developed for the government I should be able to.
Well, That's the way of things. Just like every other living thing on this planet (animal, plant, bacterium, virus) our only true job in this lifetime is to create offspring. That's really it. If you manage to get your who who into a womans cha cha and nine months later a little Cartman pops out you've pretty much accomplished the ultimate goal of life and evolution.
I wonder how IBM plans to overcome interface issues that would occur with a device this small. I suppose someday we'll be able to speak or think commands to have them occur.
Also, at what point does small become TOO small? I mean... who wants to look at a postage stamp size screen all day? I actually think that unless they can come up with a new way to display information (like projected onto your glass lens, or cornea.) they shouldn't get any smaller than the current Palm PDAs. Just work on making the PDAs more powerful and more robust.
On the other hand the survival of our species would only be perpetuated by a permanent move into space.
With enough research and time we'll be able to overcome the limitations in technology which make this too costly.
Someday we'll be able to self-sufficient bases on other planets which pull all the energy, food, air and materials from the surface of that planet.
Do we want America, and it's values to be on that distant rock, or do we want another country with it's own set of values to be the one that survives the next catastrophic meteor/nuclear war/ice age/etc...
I think those are questions Bush should ask himself when cutting back on the budget.
Some people would argue that science that isn't driving by market demands is a waste of money (Ayn Rand, and Republicans). On the other hand if we ever want answers to questions like, "How the hell did we get here." No corporation is going to foot the bill for that.
Without pure science research to expand our basic knowledge of the universe how are Universities and public schools supposed to train the scientists of the future who will go to work for corporate research teams?? Cutting funding to NASA which has pure science and exploration as it's primary goal makes sense to Conservatives because they see it as science which doesn't create wealth. However to an educator it doesn't make sense because that science is used in the classroom with students who will eventually grow up and use that science themselves to create wealth.
Right now Bush is primarily focused on increasing military spending.
Some people think it's due to patriotic causes, like the war on terrorism. Other people (conspiracy theorists) think it has more to do with the Carlyle (sp?) Group (a private investment group with high powered politicians from around the world as members.)
So if you expected a manned mission to mars by 2015... you're probably not going to see it. Not to sound overtly political, but Republicans have always hated the space program seeing it as wasteful of their money. So for every year republicans control the house, and the presidency you might as well add one more year onto the space programs mission to mars 2015 goals. (You should start counting with the year Republicans took over the house during the second year of clintons first term.)
The MPAA doesn't place ads for movies. The MPAA is basically an entertainment industry created association to keep the US Government from stepping in and cesoring films. Through self governance (which can be worse than government intervention at times) the movie industry is able to keep the law makers from telling them what is acceptable. I would much prefer the MPAA than a FOMPC (Federal Office of Motion Picture Censors).
The studios (Paramount, Disney) and distributors (Miramax, Sony Pictures) place the adverts.
I have to agree with you Amelie was definately one of the best movies of last year. It's too bad Katz doesn't bother reviewing smaller, lesser known films like that. Instead he reviews films that everybody already knows is bad.
Oh bro... Screw Jenna Jameson! It's all about watching Kylie Mingogue on your cell phone! Kylie is hotter than Jameson ANYDAY. And she's thin enough that pixalization won't occur.
Speaking of Cheap providers... does anybody know of any that don't use a phone land line? I've thought about using my cell phone but I don't get the best reception in my home office area.
Pacbell has REALLY been pissing me off lately. I no longer wish to deal with their "we're a monopoly so we can treat you as badly as your dollar will pay for," attitude problem.
Please hurry. I really want to watch the Kylie Provacatuer Lingerie ad again!! hehe.
You know what, I totally agree with you. But you are totally off topic! I'm sure you can find a Kylie Minogue forum somewhere. And I really doubt that "Can't Get Yout Out Of My Head" (CGYOMH) is about Mandrake. I mean, it'd be nice if it were... but come on. You really just wanted to plug Kylie. Or maybe you were just trolling I dunno. I do know she looks good in her bathing suit. I bet she'd look better in her birthday suit.
A vote for a third party candidate is not a wasted vote. What it does is say "You two big guys should have worked harder for my vote." Those votes which are "thrown away" are votes wanted by both candidates. The candidate who loses no doubt would have liked to have seen those "thrown away" votes. That in itself makes your vote worth something. That loser candidate should have worked harder to grab your vote.
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!:-)
I don't have any alternatives in mind to resolve the issue about what to do with bad parenting. Removing the children is probably no the best idea... We -could- remove the parents and let evolution take its course when it comes to the children. Evolution is the ultimate god when you get right down to it. If stupidity insures survival then that is the ultimate comment on intelligence.

Hmm, it really depends on how it is being accomplished. since 1=2, and 2=4 then it must be 1+1 and 2+2 so by that standard 3=6, and 1/2=1
However, if it's using a method of squaring above 1 then 3 would equal 9, and 1/2 would equal 1/4.

Both are of equal value. (ie, whine = whine)
Spoken like a true Ayn Rand fan.

If my tax dollars paid for it, I should be able to use it, look at it, alter, make love to it... whatever I want.
