is to all turn to encrypted services. If everyone, from private users to content providers, switched to all SSL, then the networks would be unable to selectively cut services, they would only see a bunch of encrypted channels. The only reason they are trying this now is that they recently got software that could do a good enough job to cut specific services on an Internet link.

  5. Pure FUD on Some Linux Users Violate Sarbanes-Oxley · · Score: 1

This is pure nonsense. Every software program has various parts owned by various companies and individuals unknown to the user. Windows itself has hundreds of parts licensed from various other companies over time that Microsoft paid for and which we have no idea. The difference with Linux is we can look at the source and we know everything, with closed software we cannot. If anything, using open source is the right thing to do here, and using closed software is not possible if you want to comply to this law, so all companies should dump closed software right away.

It's not just the fact that it doesn't look pretty.

1- When you buy the video, you are told "requires Windows XP and an Internet connection". You only find out AFTER buying it which format it comes in.

2- When you buy the video, you buy the right to stream it only. If you try to download the video, it will only download a small file and STILL stream the actual video from Google, so you cannot view it offline.

3- Because of the special DRM, there is no way to put paid Google videos on iPod or other mobile devices.

I know it's an easy answer, but really. Don't like it? Don't use it. Only tech columnists with huge egos (or kids with lots of time) think Open Source projects are there to declare war on Microsoft. Open Office is what it is, and it's been getting a lot better all the time, and personally I use 2.0 and never had the slight problem with it, and it's being used by millions worldwide. That's all there is to it.

I used to be a big Wikipedia proponent. I have well over 3,000 edits there. Now however I think the site has gone to hell. I do think that it remains a nice reference site when trying to find general information about a common subject, but its usefulness stops there. Trying to get involved in the process any further is an exercise in futility. The site is run by people with huge egos, and any change you do will most likely get changed back regardless what it is. The time of big contributions of factual information is over, and it's mainly revert wars, arguing and vandalism that are most of the current edits.

  13. Here's why on Humanity Responsible For Current Climate Change · · Score: 1

You know why you don't see much progress in alternative energies? Because it doesn't bring in money. The companies make billions with the current economy, to research for an alternate economy cost a lot and they are there to make money, nothing else. The car industry has pushed electric car technologies for decades thru lobbying simply to avoid having to do research in it. Oil companies are the second biggest profitable industry after the financial companies. There is money to be made in polluting, none in cleaning up the mess, at least not until the majority of people start caring and talk with their wallet.
