Google's has been so much ahead the other search engines, that I've been fearing they start to take a fee of its usage, or start to commercialize it like Altavista did.
Even though it doesn't seem like Teoma will win Google as a search engine, it does seem like a good try, which means that Google has to work to keep it's lead position.
Open source movement is on one hand eating it's own bread, but on the other side making a big favor to everybody by making a lot of software available for free.
Yes: we will lose some of the work to do in certain product spaces, since multitudes of volunteers are willing to work for free on competitive OSS products.
But: there will always be custom application development work for programmers. Companies are not like products - static and uniform. All companies are somewhat different from other companies, and because of that the need custom applications to be developed.
Someone said that we should code only as a hobby. I don't agree. I want to code both as a hobby, AND for work. I think that's possible. I want to program for work also because it's in most cases a very ethical way to earn you money.
It's very clear that the whole patent institution is a school example of human greed. We all want as much good for ourselves as possible. Some of us don't think anybody else than themselves.
If we would think of progress globally, and if we would settle for less, we wouldn't really need the whole patent system. And still, it's very likely that the inventors would be recognized, as it has always been in sciences, and it's also very propable that they would get more than enough money.
Terminator 1 & 2 were great movies, and Terminator 3 is propably entertaining as well. Arnold has really been the only person who could have done so well, and if he's older now, propably the role will be adjusted accordingly.
"The seller of Linux software and support always has been ambitious, but the company grew a step bolder today, taking credit for launching the open-source programming movement that underlies Linux and several other software packages."
So, forget about the context. Red Hat made that claim. Plain and clear.
Red Hat is a company, and company's purpose is to generate money to it's owners, not to "Serve the Linux and Open Source Communities". If they claim anything else as their purpose than money makin', it's marketing.
Linux is free software. If you insist on paying for it, please make sure that those who actually did the work get the money, by buying from those places which only charge for the distribution costs.
Red Hat invented nothing but rich IPOs on someone
elses work.
Oo, this mail is burning;)

What's all this whining about?
