Oh, so they can still read and make sense of the disks?
The internets says that the integrity of the disks is part of their problem; I'm sure that if you handed a few clever hackers (or a future/alien anthropologist) a binary blob of the data, they would be able to make sense of it in fairly short order, so I'm happy to stand by my comment.
Are you accounting for differences in lifestyle in those numbers?
Comparing years added to life expectancy by health care would be a lot more interesting than simply comparing life expectancy.
Also, what is your opinion on the impact of the different allocation systems involved? In the U.S., people with means receive extensive amounts of care without much analysis of whether the benefits of the care justify the costs, whereas most government run systems take a look at the benefits. Don't mistake that for wailing about rationing (there is a limited supply, so every system necessarily involves allocating the available resources), it is a statement that the U.S. system of allocation is not the same, a factor that muddies cost comparisons quite a bit.
(For what it's worth, I'd be fine with the U.S. having a health care system where it was a painless (on the bureaucratic side) process for that guy to get a new insulin pump paid for by the government, I just think you are framing your arguments rather unevenly)
I would expect him to vet the signatures (or at least the process used to collect them).
With email, that isn't going to work very well (sure, maybe the people cryptographically signed the messages, but that's really, really funny, no they didn't).
I am starting to think that they are acting to protect the legal profession; if the lawyers and judges are publicly posting their relationship, later on someone can cry foul about it, if they don't publish the notice, there is less to cry foul about it.
The whole story is pretty inane, but publishing the relationship on Facebook isn't going to lead to any more of a miscarriage of justice than the existence of the relationship.
What? If anything, the fact that Jesse Hirsh is a self promoting nut case indicates that it was not him that submitted the story (Which contained no links and only mentions textfiles.com, and not really enough info to be sure it was him and then track down and link to his block).
This Jesse guy is probably enjoying the attention though.
A lot of the zines hosted on textfiles.com contain a little blurb saying that it is fine to share the text around the internets, so there is a good chance that it shouldn't apply (I figure once the author says to share something around, he should lose quite a bit of legal ground; that doesn't mean that ignoring their wishes is a decent thing to do...).
Farming probably isn't the best analogy (tree plantations are a bit more fire and forget than a corn field), and if you measure in terms of the volume of timber (not just the number of trees, but the actual volume of wood fiber) standing on a given acre, there are plenty of landholders that have seen pretty big decreases over the past 50 years.
What if you get the job and on your way to your first day of work someone knocks you out and puts your body through a wood chipper?
My point being, I don't care about those things. You can care about them, that doesn't bother me any, but I'm not going to care about them. That isn't to say that I do not see the value in constructing a legal framework that attempts to protect the privacy of individuals, I just place a much higher value on dealing with people who respect me than I do on dealing with people who simply respect the law when dealing with me.
Lots of people have their air conditioners hooked up to separate meters that the power company can exercise some control over; the power from those meters costs slightly less.
It probably isn't the guy, it isn't really all that likely that the anonymous submitter would truthfully mention textfiles.com and then change "Detailed story I published in a zine" to "friend of mine who went on to mention it briefly in a text file zine".

The integrity of whatever media will be a much bigger problem than decoding the data on it.
Probably CmdrTaco, he seems to spend more time reading and commenting on the meta stories than the general stories.
It's the worst one, except for all the others.

As opposed to their private relationships?

I'm just going to teach my kids to be remorseless sociopaths.
When they say "No regrets!", they'll mean it.
Those moderators are just playing along with the joke (but maybe you figured that part out already).

So you admit that you did not understand the plans, but you also state with confidence that they were real...
They'll just get lighter and still only be as out of date as the material stored on them.

"four-star Mizar system".
I don't harass religious people.

It might suck until you found another job, but at least you didn't end up working for some religious tight ass.
What happened that you are back to calling us muggles, rather than beseeching us to join you in your enlightenment and awareness?
At worst that just doubles it (because every possible arrangement of a subset is going to be part of one of the arrangements of the full set).

So filter, filter, filter and filter some more?
Or maybe drain the whole thing and refill it with clean water?
It is also fairly likely that it is in this section:
