Why do you have to drill down through so many menus to do simple things? Actually finding a filter you want to apply is a major PITA too, even if you know exactly what it is called.
I wish there were a PhotoGraphics/Pro for Linux. That tool was a joy to use.
Actually, whoever's public key was used when encrypting the message (you can use multiple keys) will be able to decrypt with their private key.
So if I send an encrypted message to wilma, fred, and barney, and I used wilma and barney's keys to encrypt, then wilma and barney can read the message, but fred can't (and neither can I, since I didn't include my own public key..DOH!)
You could use any algorithm, such as blowfish, and simply share the key with those who need it out-of-band. You could then encrypt to each person using a different key, and vice versa.
Hell, you could even just use a password-protected zip file for simple stuff. As long as the person you are sending to knows the key, they can decrypt the message.
You would think that AOL would have learned english by now and dumped "You've Got Mail"
I cringe every time I hear that stupid hick-grammar phrase. I guess with stupid users, they need to maintain their image.
It's as bad as the Pennsylvania license plates that read "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania" At least Pennsylvania was smart enough to fix its mistake and change the licenses to read "The Keystone State." Of course, now they toss "http://www.state.pa.us/" on them. Ugh.
How anybody uses that tool is up to them. A pencil in the hand of a talented artist can create beautiful and wonderous things, just as a chisel in the hands of a sculptor can. Although I might own a pencil and a chisel, I certainly cannot draw well or sculpt.
Computers are the same way. They are used to create documents by writers, or design airplanes by engineers. They are used by programmers and multimedia artists to express themselves. They are also used as entertainment and for research.
For those who simply play games, or surf porn, or whatever, who cares. That's what they are using this flexible tool for. Just because I am not an artist doesn't mean I shouldn't own a pencil or a chisel. Likewise for people with computers.
That a computer makes kids smarter or dumber is a stupid argument either way you look at it. It's what the child chooses to do with the computer that helps them grow or not. It's just a tool.
That doesn't stop me from using it to get real work done, as opposed to fighting with my computer to make it do what I want, the way I want to do it.
Same goes for linux. You simply don't have the level of flexibility in windoze or MacOS required to do real work the way you want to do it quickly.
The OS/2 and Linux environments I use are flexible and allow me to quickly write little tools to handle a specific repetitive task with minimal effort. And there are spreadsheets and word processors as well, for the very very rare times I need them.
Let the windoze users go on in blissful ignorance. I'm 10x (at least) more productive in my linux and OS/2 desktop environments, as "dead" as they may be.
I started using it in 1994. Before that, it was always gopher and my private list of good FTP servers.
I think it started getting popular in 1995...right before that fscking TIME article on cyberporn that I pretty much blame for the downfall of the WWW as we once knew it.
I can't remember where I read it, but people who are special like this kid, who are highly intelligent and very good at a variety of things, often feel they have nobody with which to share their thoughts and feelings. Their peers are too stupid/lazy to understand them. Many of these children do commit suicide. It's quite sad that we live in a world of such mediocrity.
I can see how telling the kid he is going to prison would definitely trigger the suicide response.
What, exactly, did he do (I just skimmed the article) that was so bad? I hardly think "hacking" a school computer by a student justifies any jail time, let alone *10* days suspension.
From reading, this was a *TRULY* gifted kid. Not an idiot nerd like the folks here on slashdot love to put on a pedestal so often.
If people working at mcdonald's could type, even just a little bit, the order taking would be incredibly streamlined using, for example, 3 letter codes for each food item.
Much faster than having to look down and find the damned button for that food item. You could also maintain eye contact with the customer as you took their order.
The reason you "MOVE" with the right button and "SELECT" with the left is so you don't accidently move something you didn't mean to. You see, in OS/2, you can actually arrange shit in a folder EXACTLY as you want it, and that's the way it stays.
Quit bashing something you don't understand.
With that said, the previous poster was wishing for something elegant as OS/2 on *Nix. I have found the combination of Windowmaker + ROX Filer to be quite nice.
Wireless has gotten pretty inexpensive in the last few months.
Get your main broadband taken care of, get an antennae on a radio tower or three, and offer wireless internet to your community.
I can't think of why this wouldn't sell, especially if you live in a college town. Offer the service to 'internet cafes', and give them an address block. It should sell decently enough to pay off.
So, gee, it's a *good* thing that what used to be beautiful forest with some of the best singletrack on the east coast of the United States was just clearcut????
Too many people, 'needing' too many things, building too many fucking golf courses and driving too many miles in cars while throwing away tons of trash a day, encouraging it by eating at places like McDonalds.
Since I run my own mail server at home, it's a good bet that when I am around when a spam comes rolling in, the fool is still on his dialup account. Even better that the mail route comes straight to me, so finding the machine it's being sent from is trivial.
He gets DOS'd if I'm in one of those moods:)
Of course, the ISP (not the service the spammer is spoofing from) is always notified of their idiot user, and usually confirms cancelling the account within 2 days.
"In the state of Florida, driver's licenses say "Operation of a motor vehicle constitutes
consent to any sobriety test required by law". And supposedly, your signature on your
driver's license is what seals the deal. I wonder if you can take the fifth on such things.
Like the Miranda laws."
It's worse than that. Here in pennsylvania not only are you forced to take the test (well, you aren't really, but if you refuse you are charged with the DUI), but also you have to pay for the test.
And effectively. Anybody remember that michael jackson 3d thing at disney? They had lights on the walls in sync with the laser blasts. Made a neat effect.
hashing web pages (or anything else for that matter) is a standard security procedure. You monitor the hashes, and notify if something isn't right.
I use hashes for database work...for example, when I want to make a link to a data element I just added, I create a hash of that record to refer to (because you don't know the primary key ID that was assigned by the database, and that's how you would call the record.)
Anyway...yes it is obvious, and yes there is quite a bit of prior art. Even if neither were the case, patenting processes is fscking stupid anyway. If you have a prototype of a device, by all means, patent it. Otherwise go away.
But a
3,700ft Bionic Tower that
China's leaders are considering
building may come to rival the
wall as a feat of human
engineering and symbol of
national might.
Despite Toc's "shortcomings" (none important that I can see), it works, and AOL has provided it for everybody to connect to *THEIR* servers.
What is the problem here? I can use everybuddy just fine to talk to people I need to talk to. That's what IM is for. What else do you need?
If you don't like that TOC doesn't do what you want, then don't use AOL servers. Force your friends to use IRC. Run your own IRC server. Just stop Whining!

This post would be funny, except for this bullshit legislation (that affects many different types of outdoor activities, including my favorite, mountain biking):
Why do you have to drill down through so many menus to do simple things? Actually finding a filter you want to apply is a major PITA too, even if you know exactly what it is called.

So use vi and stop whining.

If it were mountain-bike related, I'd tell you to move to a full suspension rig...fixed my lower back problems :)

So how is this different from installable file systems (IFS), like those used in OS/2?
That doesn't stop me from using it to get real work done, as opposed to fighting with my computer to make it do what I want, the way I want to do it.
