Wouldn't it be a good idea for Microsoft to release Windows 98 (and earlier) as open source? After all, it is now abandonware - they're never going to profit from it again.
If Windows 98 was open source, the community could continue to produce security updates, which would help prevent the proliferation of BotNets and enable people who can't afford a new PC or OS to use their computers for a little longer. And Microsoft wouldn't have to worry about people migrating to a competitor.
It's the only decent thing to do. Which is probably why they won't do it.
Thanks for that. I might give the beta a try when I get hold of a spare hard drive, just to be safe.
Sounds encouraging. How about the right-click context menu on files? How about boot & shut down times?
My questions seem to have been modded funny, but I was serious. Those operations take several seconds on my XP machine, and I view that as totally unacceptable for such trivial tasks.
For those of you who have tried this, could you please let me know how long it takes, on average, to:
1) Open a folder 2) Cut/Copy & paste a file to another folder 3) Delete a file 4) Open the full program list from the start button (or whatever has replaced it)...because these things are too damn slow in XP.
I really don't want, or need to upgrade, but my Dad will want to buy the next incarnation of Flight Simulator, so I might have to.
Yeah, but when is the last time you saw ANY software that actually echoed passwords to the screen?
Errr. In every single TV program that ever featured someone entering a password. Usually in a huge font with lovely colors and accompanying sound effects and background graphics.
"I, Robot" was a short story, but not one by Asimov.
From asimovonline.com...
Asimov did not come up with the title, but rather his publisher "appropriated" the title from a short story by Eando Binder that was published in 1939.
Strictly speaking, neither was Foundation. It was also an anthology of short stories that had been previously published in magazines, with a new introduction & a few interlinking bits.
The best Asimov novel, IMHO, is "The Gods Themselves".
Is it possible that the Rebel ship at the beginning of Episode IV was at Tatooine because they were going to contact Obi-Wan? Leia seems to know who he is and that he lives there. Why else would it have come out of hyperspace there instead of Alderaan?
The droids meeting up with Luke isn't neccessarily a coincidence either. R2D2's memory WASN'T WIPED!!! This is the big revelation at the end of Episode III that changes the way Episode IV is viewed. R2D2 knew he needed to get to Obi-Wan, knew he would live near Luke & knew where Luke lived - why else would he be so insistent on going in that direction?
No. Not enough people care.
That's why MS are forcing (some) people to upgrade by making the next versions of Halo and Flight Sim Vista-only.

Sri Lanka, I think.
