    Who elected the congress?

    Therein lies your problem, not the congress but the people they are elected by. Of course it helps if education is given a low priority by congress.

    America does not have a democracy, rather it elects it's ruling class. Is this any better than the ruling class being decided by birth? Given the proliferation of father/son politicans it seems America is heading back to that as well.

    The old axiom about power corrupting is true, take a look at /. to see this on the micro scale.

    So stop whinning about how stupid congress people are. Start thinking about a solution?

    Personally I think the US is heading for a turmultuos time, should be good fun to watch.

    And the last line details why NASA is so anal about safety, it has very little to do with safe guarding astronauts and so much to do with safe guarding NASAs arse.

    Personally I think that we should sacrifice safety for cost/speed of development. All astronaughts are voluanteers, get rid of the beauracrats, ditch the jobs worths and get on with task of developing cheap/reliable payload delivery. Yes we will have accidents, big deal.

    Software is becomming a trade, like construction and automotive mechanics. It is not going the way of lawyers and doctors. Do doctors and lawyers have managers?

    The need for software engineers will decline, the computer is just a tool and more and more businesses are at long last recognising this. The GPL makes perfect sense for lowering costs and ensuring no one company has an advantage.

    How many word processers, spread sheets, DB, accounting, banking, real estate etc etc programs do we need?

    The upshot of this is that those of use who make living writing common software had better start to think about a career change.

    Personally, I'm quite happy to consider working at some genetech/nanotech company if all I have to do is fettle the silicon spanners :-)

    Not ALWAYS, maybe always but not ALWAYS.

    Gunpowder was first used in china for fireworks, I could be wrong here but I don't think they used it for warfare until the europeans got a hold of the stuff.

    4WD was first built in 1898, when the worlds armies were still on horseback.

    Non-perishable foods, how far back do you want to go, the first salted meats, dried fruits etc, hard to discern if they were first used by the military.

    Now on to my main point, the reason that the american military 'invents' so much stuff is that they have the money. Where does the majority of american tax payers money go?

    Back in the late 80s, you remember the 80s right?

    There was a machine that did this sort of thing, hot swappable processor boards. The Startus/88 at least I think it was an 88. The Stratus sold itself on being fault tolerant, unlike my ex's.

    It was neat watching the console as the op changed out the board.

    Yes the essential items, Health care, Education, Transit, Defense, Law enforcement & Welfare. In that order of importance :-) That way we could reduce taxes and get a higher return on the money the goverment steals from us.

    Space is not a fundemental need, yes we go because it's fun but we still haven't explored or colonised the oceans, to me this is far more of a challenge than space.

    Space was/is political rehoteric, something like the olympics. See we have a better system of goverment than you because we went to the moon or we won more medals. In truth it's just another stupid little endeavour. The trouble is it's a very expensive endeavour.

    It does not suprise me that Timmy posted this, does this guy have a real job/life? Take a look at his history of postings maybe one in five is news for nerds stuff that matters. The rest is like this garbage.

    I'm sorry to say it comes naturally. It seems we must have a common ancestor :-)

    I've read the FAQ, and notable by it's omission is any forum for a discussion on /. its self! Also the FAQ contains inaccuracies, deletion of comments being one such area.

    But back to the point at hand, /. seems to be slipping from when I first started reading. Prehaps, it's me that's changed or the site has grown. I'm not sure, but I am aware that other users feel the same way.

    The /. crew stead fastly refuse to answer or discuss this. At the same time they are starting to ask for comments on how /. should be funded.

    Having submitted ask /. stuff in the past. I can see why they were rejected. The questions I was asking didn't have easy solutions.

    Yes this is a pontless question that a simple google search would answer. However, look at some of the answers!

    /. would be better with community moderation of stories not just comments!

    As you can see I already suggested this. It makes me so mad :-) All these people stealing my good ideas, hell I should've patented it.

    As a side note, there's a lot of crap posted to /. but occasionaly there is a some good ideas. It's a shame that very few of the /. crew seem to read their own site.

    Does /. staff get a bonus for how many comments each of their stories generates?

    We all submit stories to /. but only the few get to select the stories and post inane comments on the front page.

    Go on mod me down, see if I care. It's not like any of the /. staff read their emal let alone the comments.

    For god sake you're all supposed to be intelligent. If ICANN is doing bad things then start to establish your own DNS, I know there are already alternatives they're just not mainstream. Rather like Linux five years ago!

    I think that ICANN is a crock, however it's not going to change things by whining like spoilt brats.

    Well, it was the U.K. about 15 years ago there used to be a show called the great egg race http://www.qwertyuiop.co.uk/gs/atoz/programmes/g/g reat_egg_race/, one of the hosts "Prof. Heinz Wolff" what a name. They did exactly what you suggest.

    Much as I like Linux and grdugingly admire RMS the big question I've yet to see answered is "Has the GNU/GPL been tested in court?"

    It sure would be interesting to see the GNU/GPL thrown out as un-constitutional or to see it challenged outside the US :-)

    I'm not altogether sure of the relationship between FSF and Linux, but didn't the FSF have plans for hurd to be the kernal. The only reasons that Linux became the kernel was that Linus released it under GPL and it worked.

    Is the RMS claiming that the FSF planned GNU/Linux from the start? I like RMSs articulation and view points, but is his mind faltering or his ego over whelming?

    I've been saying for a long time that the commerical companies who hold the copyrights to music/films should start to investigate a flat fee for entertainment.

    Turner et al have a huge stock of old films that are not making them money. They should set up a system where I pay $5 for the rights to a movie for life no matter what the media. I can download it, play it in my home, see it in a cinema etc etc VHS/DVD/VCD whatever, of course I'd have to pay duplication costs. But how long before my DVD rentals are burnt in store for $2-50?

    I would gladly pay for a huge number of old out of print movies. All they have to do is provide the hardware/bandwidth.

    Given that any form of encryption is breakable and that most film stock is decaying would this not gnerate huge profits for them and give the consumers what they want?

    If they're *NIX newbies for god sake show em X-Windows over ethernet. Preferably with KDE/GNOME and a decent theme or two. If you just show telnet etc they're not going to see the GUI.

    Have some source that you can recompile and make a small change, ie change a text literal. Then ask them how they'd accomplish the same thing under windows.

    Also, rehearse the thing at least twice. there is nothing more embarrassing than somebody fumbling to fix something mid-presentation. This should be 75 minutes of polished acting :-)
