  2. Robert Johnson on Ask the Man Behind the Legend - Cowboy Neal · · Score: 1

'Eventually, of course, you'll end up listening to Robert Johnson, because that's where all 20th century music comes from anyway.'

How do you explain the above statement? I'm hoping you don't equate blues as the only new form of music created in the last century?

I think that Johnson had a profound affect on blues and it's derived forms. Listening to his music and the Stones or Clapton talking about him leave you in no doubt. It's a bit like saying Herbert Hollireth(sp) was the originator of all moern computing, or that Bletchley Park defined algorithims.

  3. Re:really opening up on Ask the Man Behind the Legend - Cowboy Neal · · Score: 1

I made a suggestion the other day.

Why not just let the users have access to discarded stories, something like a new topic 'Garbage'. We could then post to any of these stories. Might be interesting to see if any of the garbage generates more comments than the front page?

Of course, the REAL reason they do not open up the submission queue is for job security. What would they do if the site ran on auto and how would they justify it to Andover.

  4. How badly do you want Linux to be big? on Linux Case Study Project At Linux International · · Score: 2

This is the question you need to answer first, because what I'm going to suggest is sure to be ridiculed.

Who is the biggest seller of OS in the world?

Why not try and promote Linux to that company?

If their OS has problems and they could get a better OS for a bargain price, would they not at least consider it? Forget the rhetoric M$ makes money.

Has any of the advocacy groups approached Micro$oft? Why not?

Both camps have a lot to gain from this, M$ gets a decent OS. Linux removes competition on the server, gets a large advertising budget, Office gets ported, Visual Dev tools get ported. Of course M$ would probably keep the desktop, but for how long?

If the Linux camp is not thinking about this, they should be. I bet people in M$ have already discussed this, maybe not with Gates and Co :-)

  5. People did not choose Windows... on Linux Case Study Project At Linux International · · Score: 1

...so why should they choose Linux.

Most people never gave a concious thought to what O.S. they would run, the decision was either made by the company or the reseller.

If you want large scale adoption of Linux then you need to start selling Linux to large companies.

Given that companies are now going back to centralised processing why is Linux with either X-Windows or VNC not being actively promoted. Is there a technical reason that limits these products in the thousands of users per machine environment?

I think the O.S. has been ready for the enterprise since 2.2.0 was released. But I have yet to see small cheap, $300, Xterms, what's the good of having a cheap OS if the xterms cost more than a PC. Don't get me started on the lack of decent XServers for windows, do you want people to jump to Linux without a safety net?

On a similar note, there is no complete COBOL compiler for Linux, there are a couple of projects in process, come on IBM give us a decent COBOL compiler and debugger. Go ahead laugh but when enterprise compaines port software it's COBOL they usually port.

When big compaies start installing Linux as a matter of routine then you will see a big swing on the home front. But it ain't going to happen because a group with no name recognition asks people to. IBM, Compaq, DELL, GateWay, Oracle, Sun, CA, EDS and the like are who you need to convince.

  6. Confused, intrigued... on Eidola - Programming Without Representation · · Score: 1

    http://www.eidola.org/implementation/java/howto.ht ml

Looks like this is just going to put a GUI on top of a new language on top of java. Sun had a visual tool that I thought was pretty neat, shame they canned it :-(

Read this book, 'Visual Object-Orientated Programming' 0-13-172397-9, to have a better understanding of the problems involved and some of the tried approaches.

Personally I don't think GUI Dev Tools are going to solve any of our problems. The Sun tool had the right approach, plug components together. Forget about defining members/functions etc Rather concentrate on putting useable components together.

At present the most productive dev tools are those catering to a specific niche. For example, Client/Server database tools are prolific and allow for rapid design/implementation and reuse. The big drawback is that you have to do things the way the tools wants you to.

Some not so novel ideas for improvement :-
A language that seperates design from implementation
Understanding that different projects need different tools/skills.
Programmers that seperate GUI from business rules
Acknowledgement that OO is just the beginning not the end
World peace and universal happiness, ok technically that's not in the remit of programming, but it's far more likely than the prior four.

In a brief summation it's about giving the sponsor more than they paid for.

You are going to be a moving bill board for them on T. V. do you know how much TV time costs? $$$ If you win how much exposure will you generate for the company?

The work doesn't stop when you get the money, that's when it starts.

When the competition is over you should work out how much publicity you generated for the firm and let them know, a slick video is not out of the question given todays hardware.

In short you can get a small amount of money fairly easily, but getting more money or getting money for the next campaign takes effort.

One of the alternatives is electric power, the main problem is storing the electric power to drive the motor.

Short of a physics breakthrough of nobel prize winning proportions we are stuck trying to store the energy and then releasing it in a fast controlled manner.

Does this have the possibility of driving my truck? I mean if the carbo cell has been around for sixty years why has no-one investigated it's use in such an application.

Medical records, criminal records etc etc What truly do we want kept secret?

Is a more thoughtful way to admit that people in power will always abuse that power and one of the abuses is the hoarding of information. One way to lessen the abuse of power is to make all information open, I mean everything.

I mean, if Timmy can get a security clearance what reason is there for the rest of us not to have one :-)

It would make all the maths easier for pay/vacation etc.

Decimal days another good idea, why not combine the two. While we're at it lets standardize on a universal time, no more time zones.
