Firstly, this is not really a difficult problem, I've submitted far harder and had them refused:-( If you're a programmer and know how to search the web you can probably achieve most of this within a week.
Secondly, it's worth a damn sight more than $150 That's the real problem, It's not some hacker with a pet peeve or needs to know if some tech is available, it's a company asking for free consultation. Shouldn't this be posted in the OSDN jbs section?
Go on mod me off topic, until/. has a daily article for people to bitch about/. I'll continue to post off topic.
Without doubt the best electronics kit I ever got was the 300 in 1 kit. No soldering just easy to connect components.
I made all the circuits in the book and then started changing components to see what happened, oh look a change in capacitance causes the light to blink faster etc etc
This was 20 years ago and I can still remember blowing all the leds, I wanted to make them brighter. So then I learnt how to solder and then I learnt what a diode did:-)
I'm struck by how she assumes people believe what they see. The first thing I do is question the reasons why I'm being shown a picture. TV news is an example of using images to stir up emotion. Notice how little information is being broadcast from the war zones around the world?
Secondly what did we do before we had cameras? History is not lost, pictures gives us minute details about an event in history.
JFK was a prime example of pictures stirring emotions but very little else!
NASA doesn't subscribe to the KISS principle. Think about any goverment funded large organization. It's not about being smart it's about covering your ass. NASA should volunteer to cut half it's budget and then get with the idea of taking risks.
We still need a relatively cheap method to get to earths orbit. I'm talking $100K per launch, max hopefully $10K. Mass produce these things and then prehaps we will see innovation in other areas. Once we can reliably get to orbit we should concentrate on innovative engines for space travel, ion drives have been proved, what about solar sails?
Taking a robot to mars? Why not take 10, the cost of the robot is bound to be miniscule compared to the transport. Better still, why not spend 10 years playing on the moon with robots? Put up a communications relay on the moon and then start blasting up robots and see which works best. If it cost $100K to get a robot to the moon then anybody could give it a go, IBM, Oracle, Amazon the Brinkley Gas Works Choir.
I'm sick and fed up with NASA being held up as a technical pinnacle when most of their missions are bloated PR exercises.
Does NASA need a large and complex mission control?
Does NASA need so much real estate?
Does NASA need so many employees?
Does NASA need astronaughts?
My belief is that the answer to all the above is no. The last one maybe open to debate but only if you like to view mans future as space.
NASA needs a good kick in the rear. It needs to be split into areas that need to focus on specific goals e.g. Rocketry, give us cheap earth orbit and then disband this group. Deep space, give us the cheapest way to leave the solar system, then concentrate on speed. Telemetry, what's the best method for remote control, radio, optical, quantum? Robotics, stop concetrating on specialist crap and start designing small cheap multi purpose explorers.
Lastly, NASA should have a sister organisation involved in earth exploration. We still have not colonised the whole earth and dim wits are talking about colonising mars. "Here there be dragons."
If you are thinking about a company wide rollout then for fsck sake use Xterms. Maybe the xterms are just diskless PCs running Linux.
The reason being the greatest cost savings for your company will come from having a centralised machine/cluster. Backups, security, upgrades etc can all be managed much easier.
It has been a very long time since gold underwrote a nations currency.
In the UK old paper money use to state that it could be explicitlly changed into gold. That was removed. Of course in the Us it's far more accurate 'in god we trust':-)
As for just getting rid of paper money, it will happen as money becomes more and more worthless, it costs something to produce money and foil counterfitting. When the costs of producing money exceed it's value then things will change.
A far more wide ranging, and debateable, issue is that in an educated society why do the majority of people still bother with money at all? It's just pieces of paper!
I would guess that funny vga port is an old fashioned serial port. Is there a standard for these things, if not contact the manafacturer and try and get hold of the interface.
Another tack is to check out all the Linux point of sale projects and start haunting the mailing lists and looking for existing code.
You can pick up a pen/tablet combo for under a $70 at http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?p rodzip=&product_code=275321
I await with interest some of the ideas, graffiti would be a good one. But what else?
If it has a screen, tic-tac-toe, othello, chess, hangman etc.
This sounds very much like the 'Small Arms Training' range.
I've been in the process of setting one of these up in my living room:-) Well ok maybe a simplified version. It's no where near complete yet http://home.pacbell.net/ajmoir/LightGun.htm
It also helps that the old American Laser Games, MadDog McCree etc are soon to be released on DVD:-) http://www.digitalleisure.com/pr010517.html
If you like the idea of playing these sort of games then drop me a line.
correct me if I'm wrong but to develop games for the PS/2, you need the Sony "TOOL" DTL-T10000 and the Metrowerks development environment, this runs about $20,000.
In your communications with Sony has anything been expressed about opening up the PS/2 to home developers? The Linux thing is neat but most hackers would like to develop a game for the PS/2 and then burn it to DVD for distribution to friends, customers etc.
I'm reasoning that the first console to have an affordable dev environment is going to clean up in market share. It would be a shame to see the Xbox 'innovate' in this manner.
A very typical Micheal headline. Sensational and uninformative.
Yes the computer industry has very little innovation. Heck I started coding for a living in the mid eighties and most of what we have now was available back then. That is why most of the stories posted are basically rehashes of older stories e.g. Redhat 34.2 is out, Micheal doesn't agree with the law, Katz spouts on about nothing in particular, Hemos loves the Mac, NASA does something neat, NASA wastes some money, Taco doesn't now how he feels etc etc ad infinitum
I think the last innovation probably happened back in the 70s, although I cannot name what it was. All we have now is evolution. It's a shame we as a species cannot or rather don't want to think more laterally.
But the computer industry is not the only industry. Check out nano-tech. Lots of new ideas being tried. What about micro biology, cloning, schroders cat et al
There is new stuff being done, it's just your not going to hear it first on/. This is for computer geeks and as such the community has only the most basic understanding of other subject ares.
'Maybe Empower Technologies is an offshot from Microsoft trying to take the palm market over using... LINUX ! ARRGH SOMEBODY STOP THEM !!!'
Why? This would be the best thing for Linux, it would also happen to be the best thing for M$. Linux gets access to the marketing engine that is M$ and M$ gets a stable OS.
Why not pay a developer to develop something you need?
Rather than invest in a company that is not going to do anything other than what companies do.
Let's see for a $1,000 what can I expect from a developer. How about Logitech web cam support, MS game controllers, USB exotica etc There are plenty of little things needing developing.
A developer wanting to contribute might choose something that was going to get him some readies.
Is there a site for this? The person fronting the money would do the QA. The developer is free to quit whenever he wants. The only downside is the prospect of the developer not getting paid, but individuals tend to be more honest thsn companies.
They have challenged the linking aspect. The law applied by the lower court was incorrect. If the higher court finds this to be the so there will be no case to answer. In fact the lower court will probably be advised of it's incorrect position.
The higher court is asking the defence lawyers to justify their clients actions. The fact they asked for justification means they are not closed to the idea that a lower court made a mistake.
Unlike a lot of posts I'm fairly happy about the tone and intelligence of the courts questions. They are seeking to establish under what precedent the prosecution has to show guilt.
Remember the court will judge cases not on good/bad, wrong/right it will usually follow precedent and the law.
Maybe if it's a webserver or a DB server. What about a terminal server?
Is it me or are most people forgetting just what a great thing *nix is for driving Xterms:-)
With the TCO for PCs finally being acknowledged and *nix running on mainframes. How long before big companies start going back to a centralised architecture? Dump that obselete expensive Pc and give the users a cheap, reliable exterm. Most users would not realise the desktop they're accessing is located anywhere other than on their machine.
So gnome on Solaris is a big deal for Sun, replace those noisy, unreliable PCs with our sleek quite net appliances. Look how clean the desktop is, better than old XP.

You can use a standard telnet to connect, although it loses a lot of the 5250 functionality.
:-)
There is an open source 5250 telnet client
X3270 is a telnet client for mainframes but some people use it for AS/400
Try some of the java telnet packages. Search on www.google.com for +java +telnet +5250.
As a last resort Wine might be able to run your current software, but I doubt it.
Of course, it would be cool to port the AS/400 apps to Linux
It's NASA stupid!
