UO has a subscriber base of approx 250k users?
Multiply that by 10 bucks a month
So we're talking 2.5 million a month in recurring revenue.
Name one other EA product that makes that much money. EA has done nothing but made crap for the last few years. NFL2001 is the same as NFL200o only better graphics. NFL2000 is the same as NFL'99 only better graphics. As a consumer Im much happier knowing that a company is going to be innovative and come out with something cool than one that's just interested in the bottom line.
My cat just meowed at me...
The current state of EA reminds me very much of M$. Flood the market with crappy johnny come latelies products add with that with spending all kinds of dough on marketing and lawers instead of good coders you end up with a faceless megacorp that nobody gives a shit about.
I'm ranting...
I hope you get my point. Your answer could be akin to saying "Its M$'s product let them spend money where they want" Just because its their game it doesnt mean I want to be fed the same ol shit on shingles that i've been fed for the last 3 years.
I dunno, im not looking for flamebait, im just trying to get some good discussion goin.
I read the translation link and as soon as I saw it was an electronic arts sponsered event I got furious.
I'm a ultima online player, in fact me, my dad and brother all share accounts. We're seperated by at least about 30 to 100 miles and we meet online and hang out.
This outrages me cause its 4 million dollars. 4 million dollars they could have spent fixing UO Third dawn. This new client is a complete piece of shit, constantly crashes, has a really bad memory leak that can use up a gig of swap in less than 30 minutes.
They could have used that 4 million dollars to pay the salaries of the OSI people they shitcanned too! Why the hell did they fire Richard Garriot a.k.a. Lord British? I guess when your wasting 4 million on something stupid like a lan event its easy.
This is why the dot-coms failed. Being a sysadmin in about 8 companies in the last 5 years as a contractor or perm, you get access to it all, one company I worked at when I started getting suspicious about where the money was going I opened up their quickbooks and saw money going into all kinds of stupid shit, mainly the CEO's pocket. This wasn't income money either, this was private investor money that was meant to take the company public, which it never did.
I'm gonna stop before I get too emotional and start a 3 page rant. Bottom line is EA is really showing their true colors by spending money in this fashion. 4 million i'm sure would have covered the salaries for all the OSI people they just fired. We know now it wasn't a money issue, but instead it was some sort of personality conflict issue or maybe an ego issue between the Execs at EA and Lord British.
Fuck you EA if any of you are reading this. I plan to make this news on every UO board I can find. Any company that has management that puts personal issues ahead of what the company goals are is doomed for failure. Whats that? You shitcanned all those people so your boss wouldnt shitcan you in order to buy your kid that GI Joe with the kung fu grip? I've been with you since the 8-bit days, stuff like pinball construction set, movie maker, reals of impossibility, ect, but I don't think I will ever support another EA product again, anyone wanna buy a account with a house on Moonglow tram?
For starters, there is still literally millions of AD&D geeks out there. Secondly turn based is completely different playstyle than RTS. RTS forces the player to mke decisions in real time vs planning. Perhaps there should be a new hybrid TBRTS (turn based real time strategy) that applies to most new stuff. A good example of a TBRTSFPS (turn based real time strategy first person shooter) would be counterstrike or even rainbow 6. Both games have turns where people can sit and wait and plan stuff out......
Sorry folks sorta forgot where i was goin with this, but i think you get the picture, turn based isnt going anywhere, just its gaming characteristics will be brought into some of the newer games coming out.
I know thresh, ask him about the fragfests put on by racine and dave allison, anyways..
I doubt many hi-end fps champs are really gonna go on this thing, heck they all make tons of money doing product endorsements and such. I've also heard stuff like the hi-enders don't go online as themselves anymore because of too many people playing "smear the queer" Where as soon as they enter a server, everyone and his brother wants to say "I killed thresh!!"
As much as I would like to see this game have success I have to give it the kiss of death allready for several reasons.
1. Most FPS gamers do not believe in the pay for play system.
2. What is the liability for cheating?
3. Its sports gambling, all sorts of stuff can and will be rigged.
I'll give it $20 bucks before I say, "ok this sucks"
I am sorta curious, will the DVD's these produce be playable on DVD's from other countries? I mean if I want to send grandma back in bulgaria a video of the kids, will I have to use a camera from bulgaria? Note to moderators: Not flamebait, nor funny, nor troll, legitimate question.

Political motivation is all about not having what the other guy has and doing what you can to even the playing feild. If you cannot you have to make due with what you have availiable to you.
Case in point in regards to the middle eastern countries. Do we really know whats going on over there? Has anyone here actually been to iraq? How do we know this whole deal with suddam hussain isn't just another attempt at the goverment trying to get political support from the people when we go to war?
Ok so let me bring you to my point. It is possible that saddam would use these machines to build weapons and make big boom things blow up. It could also be possible he just wants them for geological calculations on his oil fields and our goverment is trying to hide the truth. Think about all our veterans that returned with gulf war syndrome. Headaches, nausia, arthritis all over, yet the.gov insists no monkey business went on over there. My guess is there might be a big coverup going on in regards to the export too.
Maybe he just wants to surf the web, who knows? Anyone remember General Kadaffi? He was Suddam Hussain before there was a Suddam Hussain. Yet in the last 10 years he has been rebuilding his country, bringing water to the desert, giving land to his people, medical and welfare programs which have greatly improved conditions.
I think there is something Hussain has that the goverment wants. It could be oil, could be plutonium deposits, could be camels for all I know. Point is they're starving the country to death by putting all these trade restrictions and embargo's on them. This article made me think back to another article a few weeks back about atari800 computers still being used in russia for heart monitoring. I would imagine most of the middle eastern countries are worse off because they purchased most of what they have from the old USSR. I think it is inhumane to deny another human the absolute best in medical technology.
By lifting the ban on exporting powerfull computers it would open up a world of new possibilities for them. If we lifted all the bans there would be nothing to fight about at all (unless like I said,.gov wants something in return) I could see that country becoming the next malaysia, a middle eastern version of silicon valley.
In retrospect, I can allmost understand why Iraq hates us so much. We've blocked the import of more than just computers, between the US and the UN we've managed to block food, medicine, clothing, just about anything you can think of.
I'd suggest everyone check out the food-for-oil stuff here http://usinfo.state.gov/regional/nea/iraq/iraq99.h tm#obstruction . It basically sums up all of the american goverment motivations.

'Diamond chips' would be invaluable in electronic devices exposed to high temperatures. Semiconducting diamond works up to temperatures of 500 C -- silicon devices fail at around 150 C.
So not only can you toss the cooling fan, you could use it as a mug warmer too!
Seriously though, I wonder if an electronic circuit could work at 500 C. Something I remember from science class about resistance and heat rise together. Considering 0 is freezing and 100 is boiling, we're talking about heat on the magnitude of a small blowtorch. I'll be surprised if they can come out with a practical application for this.

Ok i've read comments about shooting, stabbing, whacking, hiring a hit, blah blah blah, sounds like a bunch of dumbass jocks too me.
Think this through....
IRC has gone way beyond what its creators intended. The system is so conflounded because it went from just a way to do realtime chat to being able to track IP's, send and recieve files, play games over (read the descent faq) all kinds of fluff that was never intended for the original purpose.
How fast can a person read in IRC? If it were redesigned go go back to its original function what would be the maximum bandwidth a person could read? Heck I remember when I went from 1200 baud to 2400 baud and I couldn't keep up on the chat text.
So thats your answer ircops. Limit to just text going in and out of a channel and cap that limet at around ohh.. 1200 baud. Put it another way, would you trust a 3 year old with a gun? Hell no! Why would you even want these vunerabilities to exist in chat? Strip it down I say. I dunno, sorry to rant but I hope im making a +5 point:)
Well you never met the guy, he used to tell me I was taking mind altering drugs whenever I drank a pepsi, if that isnt pompous self rightous then I dont know what is. Better example, is a person smoking crack a crackhead or an addict? you decide.
Yeah I must admit, them ads gotta be limited to cartoon network and nickalodian before they cause someone to climb a bell tower with a rifle.
I'm not too sure about the NiMH, i've only had one for like two days or so. But the 160x100 screen although small, is good enough, remember most 8-bit computers (atari mode 7 comes to mind) could only do this res at 4 colors, so its not that bad.
Point is there has been a need for something like this for quite some time, I think palm missed the mark by "applelizing" their product i.e. people will pay for the name brand. At least the cybiko is cheap, expandable, and pretty snazzy looking. It doesn't take a lot of processing power to control a server, read your e-mail, simple arithmatic, ect. All these Pentium 4's 1.4 gigahertz are nice, but to me seem a little overpowered for what I need. Why should I need a computer that requires a 300watt power supply, heatsink, fans, a fat CRT monitor just to read e-mail? It's like renting a train to move one of your bedrooms, way too much overkill.
I can tell your a geek with $99 bucks to spend, just get one for kicks, BTW they plan to have a GPS reciever for the thing eventually, not to mention memory expansion, ect.
A little follow up I should have included in the original.
http://www.egroups.com/group/CybikoDev --cybiko egroups dev board, lots of cool coffee talk here.

http://www.cybiko.com/layout.asp#Hardware ---skip the flash and go straight to the specs.
Like I said, 200 bucks for two of these and you have a remote and another one for your bot. BTW good luck searching elsewhere for this stuff, it seems cybiko has employed some web monkeys just to make fake sights filled with BS.
I've been finding out all sorta info on this little bugger, for 99 bucks you pretty much get a toy as powerful as a 386, problem is the platform is not fully open sourced as of yet, we're still trying to get a bunch of info out of the damn thing (like HTF does the serial port work?) At least there is a free SDK for it.
I'd really recomend you slashdot readers take a look at this thing, big deal, its not a palm and your other geek freinds will probably tell you its gay, but isn't that a little like the pot calling the kettle black?
There are a lot of little projects going on with the thing right now, people have allready gotten stuff like a offline web page reader going for it, a linux synchronizer, me is working on getting an atari emulator working on it. From what I do know of the hardware, these are much better canidates for making robots. The built in 900mhz RF on the thing is instant remote. The cartridge port on the bottom is a bus connection so you can add whatever CPU you want to the thing (only cybiko has done this so far with the MP3 player)
I'd like to get some feedback from other/.'r about how they feel about the cybiko.
Being a silicon valley sysadmin, and bouncing around throgh about 10 companies in 6 years i've seen alot of enviroments.
Most companies aren't racist, yet they do practice segregation. (sp?) I'd name names but we'll protect the innocent.
The company I currently work for is a Fortune 500. I've been to 3 sites, the one I work at is mainly indian h1-b visa workers. By my estimate its about 150 indians, 10 asian, 5 anglo and 1 african american. The reason for the huge number of indians i'd suspect is because the site boss himself is indian.
The company I worked at before had a hawaiin CIO, therefore canidates from hawaii universities were hired before anyone else. It had close ties with HP so there were quite a few HP employee's on board, it was a good mix of about 50/50 between pacific islanders and anglo's.
Before that I was at a company that was allmost 90% taiwanese. The CEO was taiwanese so allmost the rest of the company followed suit.
Before that it was a German CEO, but this one was funny, we had a mormon CTO who hired a bunch of mormons from BYU. So you had a drinkin German fighting with a pompous self rightous prick religious mormon fanatic. After the CTO was fired most of the mormons were gone too and the CEO surrounded himself with germans.
I guess the point i'm trying to get at here is people in general try to surround themselves with like people, and in the tech industry this is more important than anything because of the communications involved. Personal expirience has taught me to allways use troubleticket systems because it forces them to explain the problem in text based english, which is free from the problems of bad verbal english mixed in with a heavy (put your favorite language here) accent.
I've been around redmond many times, well more like the washougal/camas area. Its pretty darn close though, and my impression has been that there are a lot of white people up there. So naturally there would be quite a number of anglos hiring/promoting anglos at M$. As horrible as it sounds, birds of a feather try and flock together. Certainly I could have sued a bunch of the companies i've worked for (they're discriminating my italian heritage) but i've found there are better things to move on to in life than spending your time in court over petty stuff. If M$ wants to be a white company, by all means go right ahead, go find a new job. I'm sure somebody out there is going to want to hire you. Better yet go to HP, out of all the companies i've seen so far they seem to be the most desegragraded company around. Someone should do a little photoshop magic and make a pic of bill gates wearing a pointed white hood.:)
Anyone living close enough, could tap the signal without actually being inside of a starbucks, then reroute it to the rest of the neighborhood via some cat5 cable thrown over the fence. Hell id do it.
Sometime last year there was this neighbor who insisted on leaving his junked cars parked in front of my house. Not just for a week but for allmost a full year!!! So naturally I got sick of it. I'd call the cops to come out and take care of it, they'd put a sticker on the car to move within 72 hours. They'd move the car for like a week, then park it right back in front of my house. Unfortunately there was a loophole here and unless I could prove that these jerks were being malicious about their parking habits I'd never be able to park in front of my house again.
The cops at this point were getting pretty sick of coming out to my house too.
So I went out and got a little X-10 cam, vid capture card and set it up on my windowsil. I set it to capture 1200 frames every 24 hours and let it sit there for about a month before I called the cops out again.
This time I had the cops bring the neighbor over to the house. He was one of those greasy inbred white trash types. He started yellin at me saying I was a lier blah blah blah right in front of the cops saying he moves those cars everyday. I opened up the AVI file of the time lapse, man I wish I could have gotten the look on his face when I started to play it. Sun goes up, car still there, sun goes down, car still there, moon comes up, car still there, moon goes down, car still there. The cops started muscling the guy saying they could charge him with falsifying information on a police report and they'd let him go if he promised to never park in front of my house again. Never had a problem since.
Could you imagine the silly lawsuits that could arise?
Xfree-86.org sues MS for making a windowing system
Fujitsu sues IBM over spinning magnetic media
Sony Sues viewsonic for making monitors capable of different refresh rates.
Bush sues Gore saying he had the idea for presidential canidacy first
Nortel Sues 3com for use of cat5 jacks on their nics
Antec sues Compaq for use of plastic in their cases
Nextel Sues Nokia for having "antenni" on their cell phones
Lucent Sues AT&T for using touch tone on their phones
I really think there needs to be a "common good" law concerning the use of patents where if a patent is one that is too silly to be patented but everyone is gonna use it, it goes into some type of GPL where anyone can use the design not-for-profit and anyone using it for a profit pays royaltees.
Other than that the whole thing stinks

I still wonder, what will happen to all of the 3dfx technology in the arcade? Games like guantlet ledgends, the entire San Francisco Rush series. Will future iterations of these games be on 3dfx or nvidia hardware?

I'd like to get some feedback from other

Being a silicon valley sysadmin, and bouncing around throgh about 10 companies in 6 years i've seen alot of enviroments.
:)
Someone should do a little photoshop magic and make a pic of bill gates wearing a pointed white hood.
Thats my $.02

Here's my idea.
Anyone living close enough, could tap the signal without actually being inside of a starbucks, then reroute it to the rest of the neighborhood via some cat5 cable thrown over the fence. Hell id do it.

I got a cool application, It worked too.

Xfree-86.org sues MS for making a windowing system Fujitsu sues IBM over spinning magnetic media Sony Sues viewsonic for making monitors capable of different refresh rates. Bush sues Gore saying he had the idea for presidential canidacy first Nortel Sues 3com for use of cat5 jacks on their nics Antec sues Compaq for use of plastic in their cases Nextel Sues Nokia for having "antenni" on their cell phones Lucent Sues AT&T for using touch tone on their phones I really think there needs to be a "common good" law concerning the use of patents where if a patent is one that is too silly to be patented but everyone is gonna use it, it goes into some type of GPL where anyone can use the design not-for-profit and anyone using it for a profit pays royaltees. Other than that the whole thing stinks --toq

I own it all, i don't wanna go into details and lets just leave it at that... I still wonder, what will happen to all of the 3dfx technology in the arcade? Games like guantlet ledgends, the entire San Francisco Rush series. Will future iterations of these games be on 3dfx or nvidia hardware? I really really like my voodoo. It just works, and there is a lot of older games that use the glide API that I fire up once in a while (descent2, carmageddon) I worry that glide will go away and if I were ever to lose my Hell I'm too hopped on on vicoden to finish this post. I think im gonna take a nap now. --Toq
