I once tried (from a public terminal where I had choice of only IE 4.01 or NS 4.79) accessing a site through cjb.net redirection, and cjb tried to install Xupiter (a known spyware). This was a couple years ago, I think.
I run Win2K rather well in 64 MB, this includes MAME (which runs better on 2K than 98 even in 64 MB!), BT, Virtual Dub for fansubbing - sure, it can't take as much running at once, compared to 98, but it still does the job better than 98 for most purposes.
Some sites use ActiveX to embed WMP. Why? Don't ask me. But it makes it harder for me to find how the hell they embed the stuff because in order to playback in real time on my Celeron/700 I have to download the ASX, look for the reference and leech it with mmsclient, then play it with mplayer.
My idea would be to come up with some kind of a live Windows CD (yes, it can be done), put all necessary software on it, wire it into the drive. System boots, runs consistently {well | poorly}, spyware has limited opportunity to install, and is gone on reboot.
That is, assuming using Knoppix is not an option. I would certainly recommend Knoppix over Windows. XD
What? With Hed Rat 8 at least it's almost mindlessly simple to resynch your clock (hm, haven't used in awhile, wasn't it "rtime" or something like that?), and you can always put the command in a cron job and have it run automagically, if you so like.
It's nice to have a clunker around, though, it would be nicer if I could try getting online with it... Anyone know of any WFW 3.11-compatible DSL dialers (PPPoE)?
I installed Windows 2000 alongside 98SE, and added SP4, while offline. Got online, and first thing I did was talk to a guru about killing off all non-essential services. 2000's got most of the same vulnerabilities as XP but I am not affected because (1) I keep reasonably up to date, (2) I do not run any nonessential services, (3) I made sure to install Firefox as the default browser before even getting 2K online.
Isn't the WMA audio codec in all its incarnations fully implemented in LAVC? As of late I have had little trouble playing WMAs in MPlayer, so mplayer -ao pcm followed by lame is my usual solution when I find a WMA on KaZaA.
What about IRC over SSL? I know a few networks (IRC Highway for one) that support that. UltimateIRCd and UnrealIRCd should both be fine for such a purpose.
They keep buying up companies, tying more shit (IE, WMP) into their OS, and generally being anticompetitive, and the government chooses to sit idly by as another one bites the dust, and as MS becomes more, more and more uncompetitive. It's insane. In a sane regime MS would have been divided into an OS/hardware company and an applications company.

Back in the days when HoTMaiL was the only webmail, it was good... Then MS bought them out and they turned to shit.
My webhost gives me e-mail addresses. I just use them. I do have a gmail addy and it's nice. XD;
You know, I'm probably going to take a major karma hit for this, but could a possibility for an open source Winamp be achieved by hacking XMMS onto a Windows GTK1 variant? (I think it's GTK1 anyway)

XBOX is a Celeron/733 with 64 MB RAM, isn't it?
Not too different from this piece of shit DELL I'm already using...

Yeah, and it's called Luna.
That's if you're talking a corporate version without activation.

Have a router already; think something's wrong with it as it has been unable to connect to my provider lately.

Acclaim released some pretty kickass arcade ports in the mid-90s (Mortal Kombat II and T2: The Arcade Game).

Can you say "Block images from this server" ? I knew you could. One of the reasons I stick to Firefox.

I thought IE5 did that already.

Ideally I'd want to be able to spam in mirc with them, which only Foobar has, and I'm not sure how winamp-like it is.

Precisely what the parent of my original post was looking for.
To me, Cxbx or WINE are "API emulators".
