  1. Re:Films? on Review: Rush Hour 2 · · Score: 2, Interesting

Becauses reviewers lack the creativity to actually create a decent story, so they use their lack of creativity to critique the stories of others. Most movie reviewers only like movies about gays and retards, which is why Forrest Gump and The Crying Game were loved by critics all over.

  2. Re:with the possible exception of Shrek? on Review: Rush Hour 2 · · Score: 1

I agree...Shrek was an ok movie, but I didn't find it hilarious. The computer animation was good, and the story was fairly original, but it doesn't compare to the like of South Park or a Farelly brothers flick.

  3. yeah well.. on The Death Of The Open Internet · · Score: 3, Insightful

It is much easier for an 'internet business' to be profitable if they ACTUALLY SELL SOMETHING!! People are finally figuring out that nobody clicks on banner ads, and so advertising revenue is down.

Think about it, advertising on the net is unique in that it is integrated within the content. the closest thing would be magazines where the ads are mixed with the content, but most magazine ads are on their own page.

In radio, you listen to a song, hear a commercial, then another song. They don't stop in the middle of the song to tell you about McDonald's and then play the rest of the song - but that same principle is what internet advertisers are wanting to do.

Bottom line is advertising on the net just does not work very well, especially pop up ads.

Has anyone seen the pop up ads that appear just a bit too far to the right, out of the screen area, so that the maximize button is on the edge of the screen. If out of habit, you click the top right of the pop up window, you will maximize it rather than close it. Sneaky, sneaky.

  5. what do you expect on The Faceless Astronauts · · Score: 1

When was the last time a space mission involved going up to save the planet from an asteroid or to stop an alien invasion?

I think people would rather watch a movie that keep up with the space program, and most people think all that money is a waste anyway.

  6. The French on Mystery of Loch Ness Solved? · · Score: 1

That geologist is French, and the English and Scottish have not liked the French for a very long time. This is all just a french plot to thumb their noses at the Europeans with the cooler accents and less homosexuals in their population.

Well you see the problem is how long it takes a business to recoup expenses on a machine that costs 10 grand. On top of that, if it costs a buck to play, then a lot of people won't play it too much.

  11. Wait a god damn minute on XBox Goes Down in Public · · Score: 1
Doesn't the XBOX and the whole ideas of a console system go against everything Microsoft has stood for? Think about it - M$ is notorious for releasing buggy software then putting out a patch 2 weeks later. You can't patch a console game!!! WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!?

  14. Yeah, we did this on Do You Have Your 'Crisis Week'? · · Score: 1
I used to work for a branch of GE and they were big into training other people to be able to do IT-type jobs, but only half assed. This made things worse for IT because not only did they have to fix the person's computer, but they had to fix it AFTER the person had already tried to fix it themselves.

I was originally hired as a web developer, and walked out on them after one week they told me they wouldn't need me after a couple of months, and then the next week they asked me to prepare and teach a CLASS so that I could show the others how to use FP 2000.

How about that? "We don't need you, but can you show everyone how you do your job before you leave."

  15. Wow on So Long, Hitchhiker: Douglas Adams Dead At 49 · · Score: 1
D.A. was one of the greats. I remember back in my early computing days when the Hitchhiker games were being advertised.

He may have only been 49, but he did a lot more with his life than some other 49 year olds. Plus he left a lot behind - enough to solidify his memory forever.

    Immortality through art.

  16. Summer movies on Review: The Mummy Returns · · Score: 1

The Mummy Returns officially kicks off the 2001 summer of big-budget no-brainer movies. There will be a couple of standouts this year (Pearl Harbor and Planet of the Apes), but these kind of movies are meant to make money off teens and young adults. It sold out at every theatre around here this weekend, and will no doubt be profitable, so be ready for a sequel.

  20. Clueless IT Bosses on Playing With IT, And Why It Matters · · Score: 1
At my last job, the head of IT wasn't even able to back up her email from outlook. In addition, she wasn't clear with the concept of single clicking vs. double clicking while browsing the web. This was just the tip of the iceberg. How's that for having a supervisor to try and go to for advice???

As far as IT guys with toys - you got to look at it this way - either let the IT guys play with the new stuff and figure it out, or let the non-IT people play with the new stuff and break it.

I found a little trick you can do by creating a rule in Outlook Express.

Just make a rule that says if the text "in the subject line" appears anywhere in the message, to automatically delete it. A lot of emails come with that "to be removed, reply to this email with REMOVE in the subject live".

I've found that it works pretty well.

  23. my Blow review on Review: Blow · · Score: 2

Blow is based on the true story of George Jung, the man responsible for bringing cocaine into the United States and creating the market for it that still exists today. It stars Johnny Depp as Jung, and also features Paul Ruebens (formerly Pee Wee Herman) and Penelope Cruz. Jung started out dealing marijuana in California. His girlfriend was a stewardess and they used her to smuggle the dope because the airlines would never check a stewardess' bags. After a short time, he built a small empire of single engine planes and smuggling. When he got busted with over 600 pounds of pot, he ended up in jail with a cellmate who had connections with the Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar. This connection led Jung to meeting with Escobar and that's how Escobar introduced cocaine to the U.S. in a BIG way. "Once the actors and the musicians start doing it, everyone else will catch on." This movie shows the ups and downs of this business, as Jung goes from rags to ritches to less than rags. He loses everything that he ever cared about and even more. Early on, his father tried to teach him that money is nothing compared to love. This movie is about stupidity and corruption, and someone trying to do the right thing the wrong way. Depp is wonderful, as always, as Jung. He is able to pull off humor and heartbreak at the same time. Too bad he has a mullet hairdo through most of the movie, but that's forgiveable since Blow is set in the 60's and 70's. Ray Liotta is also great as Jung's father. Penelope Cruz is really just eye candy for the guys, and her character isn't developed too well. She's a money-hungry drug dealer's girlfriend type. Unfortunately, Blow will be comapred to Traffic. Traffic is a far superior film, but I think Blow stands on it's own because it is a true story.

  24. Sega bombed on Dreamcast Postmortem · · Score: 1

Sega has made way too many systems that bombed out. In fact, the only thing that kept them going was the Genesis. They do make some decent games, and made a wise choice in sticking to just making games. Remember the Saturn? How about the Sega CD? Or the 32X? Or the portable thing....the nomad? A company has to spend a LOT of money on development for those sort of things.

  25. Fear on Napster Traffic Drops · · Score: 1

I think the traffic has dropped just because most people are too scared to use it now cuz they are afraid they might get sued or something. I know of a couple of people who don't know any better and they don't want to use it anymore.
