I currently live in Lafayette and it's a great town and the poverty is not nearly what SEEMS to be implied here. The local Library has plenty of computers available to anyone who wants free internet access rendering the argument above null. The people the article and the city talks about would be better served using the Library's facilities to find a job first, then purchasing a PC followed by Cox or Bellsouth's 128k up/128k down internet connections. What the article misses completely is the fact that Cox is by far and away the 1 ton gorilla here. Before the city's proposal I'd rarely see Cox advertising on Cable television, but now our market is bombarded daily with adverts telling us how Cox IS our neighbors, friends, and family. They are trying desperately to give us that oooey gooey feeling towards them. Also since the proposal broadband upload and download speeds for their 50 dollar a month service has doubled! The irony is they made their own case against themselves.:) I don't agree with the article and I'm still not entirely sure I support the city's decision, but ultimately it competition is a good thing for consumers. As long as Lafayette's fiber venture doesn't start loosing OUR money and is self sustaining I'll back it for years to come. Oh and last but not least, there isn't even a bayou in Lafayette.:P
Well I won't be purchasing the marvel MMORPG, nor any marvel comics in the farseable future. Not that I purchased their comics anyway,(I'm a DC man myself) but I was somewhat intrested in their upcoming MMORPG.
Look, before I went into the booth I still wasn't sure who I would vote for, but now that it's over, I'm glad it's over. Thing is I would have to agree with the poster above , that elections have not and never will be perfect, but that doesn't mean we should not strive for it. I have a feeling the accuracy will only get better with time and have a generally more optomistic outlook than most slashdoters on the political stuff. I really feel that the negativity on both sides is what will destroy our democracy. From what I've read the amount of votes we are talking about here would not have changed the election. Also I have yet to read anything on slashdot stating how many votes Kerry received due to anomolies. The irony I guess is the slashdoters who are screaming foul at the republicans are even more guilty than Bush for the war.--Flamebait At least it Bush had what SEEMED to be reliable information before going to war. In the future I would enjoy a much more independent view from slashdot. Before this election I would have considered myself to be somewhat independent in thinking and especially politics, but the far left (or whatever the right's buzzword for them these days) has really put a bad taste in my mouth and ultimately lost Kerry a vote. Flame away and reinforce my opinion. P.S. Too lazy to spell check P.S.S. I wasn't to lazy to read the other sides opinion ala. moveon.org, so don't even try it.
I think I'll setup and exact replica of Slashdot called slashdork.org equipped with an RSS reader so when slash adds something it'll update my site too. I'll even go so far as to use their subject icons, figure out a way to duplicate their comments, etc. I wonder if I'll end up feeling their wrath? I know for sure I'll feel their user's wrath.
I love this crap. Keep up the picking and poking. This is exactly why Bush will win. While everyone of you morons are on the far left bitch about Bush you are loosing votes. No one wants to listen to baby's crying they want solutions to todays problems. This is exactly why they'll vote for Bush. The train has left the building and the far left is sitting on the bench. The most important issue to the majority of Americans is their and their children's saftey. You can argue until you're blue in your face about losing our civil liberties, (and I would agree with you!) and how evil George Bush is, but it's only falling on deaf ears. Johny Kerry needs to get up there and tell everyone what he would do better to fight the war on terror. I wish he would because I would really like to hear it, and until he does my vote goes with Bush. I think O'Reilly said it best when he stated Democrats are idealists and Republicans are realists. I think we need them both and am hoping Kerry gets a little more realistic.
My game passions went out the window when I started getting simulator sickness from everyone I played!!! In my situation I ended up regressing rather than progressing. I picked up one of my teenage passions again. I am now officially a comic book geek again.:) I never saw it coming, but they have gotten much better and it fills that fun void games used to fill.
This is no diffrent than what some slashdotters want the US Government to do with offshoring of IT jobs. The only diffrence would be that the US Government would be the ones raising the prices through taxes, tariffs, etc.
Don't get me wrong I still disagree with it, but you can't have you're cake and eat it too.
Nope, no more than I can control what's on the Internet. The point is everyone would agree that these guys and the people who financed them should be reimbursed for their time, effort, and contributions. This is what patents and stock market/free economy is for. I believe Tesla should have been able to license his technology (for a limited time of course) to competitors, inventors, and entrepreneurs to make his and his investors money back. The same applies to the U.S people. The U.S government using it's citizen's taxpayer dollars created the Internet and if another country wants complete control over their TLD, they should have to pay some sort of fee.
The U.S. government created the Internet in the first place, so shouldn't they have control. Unlike corporations that pass the cost of R and D on to an entire planet of consumers the American people bankrolled this whole thing, so their government should have the right to administer it. If another government wants utter control over their TLD, they should have to pay for it. Didn't the U.S. Gov. lay out some guidelines or rules for dealing with situations like this?

Interesting how Slashdot takes computer security so seriously, yet when it comes to US national security they are so blaze.
If you piss off as many politicians as GW, then you must be doing something right!

The good news is it shoots a hole in all the conspiracy theorists idea that the government has this information readily availalbe all the time. :)

Your reply isn't relevant. Please think about what you said and what was stated. I'm sure you'll agree you need to correct yourself.
