  1. For those of you who didn't bother the read it. on Turn your PS2 into a Tivo · · Score: 1

No it doesn't make your PS2 record TV. It lets it recieve streamed recorded TV.

What this is is software that is loaded on your PC and streams over IP multimedia files to the ethernet adapter available for the PS2.
Because it loads the software off of a pressed CD/DVD {not sure which} it does not require you modify your PS2 in any way that would void your warranty.

Why the hell would someone want this? Well I want it because it will give me an inexpensive way to create a server/client network for passing my media files around my house [small apartment]. I can have one computer that stores and records all of my tv and mp3 needs and an easy way to access it around the house.

Well then I guess I shouldn't post about the pictures on my site of the life-size, Anime-style, Robotized-with-Mindstorms CowboyNeal and Tux Lego Statues which portray CowboyNeal drinking beer and Tux hurling [vomiting] on a passed out Bill Gates [whom seems to not to be able to handle his liquor]. The beer mug is of course running embeded linux, which uses 802.11b and Bluetooth to connect with the Mindstorm powered Beer Tap, to get a refill, and of course the whole thing is a Case Mod that holds and AMD AthalonXP liquid [read: beer. Well its gotta go somewhere when the statue drink it.] cooled and overclocked to 3GHz [can you imagine a beowolf cluster of these?!?]. Cowboy neal is wearing a ThinkGeek.com "RTFM" shirt and Tux is wearing a "BSOD" shirt.

I wonder what lego vomit would look like....

  4. What Happened? on Copyright Office Proposes Webcasting Regs · · Score: 1

At one point broadcasters were being controlled because the limited resource of "air waves." Now they're being controlled because of the all mighty buck.

One of the original radio broadcasts was to communicate a "Holiday Greeting" and play some music. Radio has always been about communication and entertainment.

I understand and agree with the idea that artist should receive financial compensation for there art and that they should keep control of it.

[one common form of entertainment being the enjoying of art] Why are these ideas mutually exclusive? They aren't unless you factor in money hungry people.

I'm not saying that record labels are intrinsically bad. They aren't. It's when they get out of control and change their main focus from distributing art to making money. Making money should be only about supporting the artist, the art, new artist, and yourself/your family.

Broadcasters should be interested in entertaining and supporting art and maybe educating.

    {just my idealistic rant}

  5. Re:Missed first post... on Online Journalism Same As Print/TV · · Score: 2, Insightful

When it comes to who is a publisher, if my understanding of the law is correct, it is open to anyone with means to publish something.

This stems from the fact that one of the major things freedom of speech was set up to protect was the people walking around passing out handbills and the like, speaking against the British government.

So as long as what is being said by the publisher is something that would be consider to be protected, ie poltical speech, opinion, not defamation or libel, and etc, then it would be protected. This would cover website publishers.

What is most important, IMHO, about the NY Supreme Court saying this is that it may mean that the Supreme Court may either have to hear a case about this and set precedence or that they will refuse to hear it and then the precedence set by the NY Supreme Court will stand.

  6. Re:Loose the laptops on On the Problems with Laptops in School? · · Score: 1

I'm a student at a university that requires all students to lease a laptop from them. I take mine to class everyday and take all of my notes on it. Many other students have their laptops in class and some of them aren't taking notes, but some of the people with paper and pen out aren't taking notes either. They are doodling, writing notes, doing other homework and writing poetry. So what's the difference between that and playing solitare or writing email?

  7. 2 Cars = Lots of space on Converting a Garage into an Arcade? · · Score: 1

I'm not going to wonder why or how. I'm just going to imagine ...

General Room: I remember alot of dark [dirty] red carpets with bad designs. I agree that carpet is gonna to help with sound and comfort, but I would like to add the suggestion of "outdoor" style carpet. For one thing its easier to clean and another if the doors are open... Since many pointed out the resale value "thing" instead of paint I would suggest cloth, either in the form of curtains or covered panels [maybe 4x8 sheets of foam insulation]. This makes it easier to retrofit the room and either idea will help with sound control. The bar stools [there are actually stores that specialize in these] would be a nice touch but not necessary. Lighting is imporant, indirect lighting is better with centralized fadable lighting controls. Also speakers placed through out the whole room [plenty of bass]. Also a couple of networked webcams would be cool.

Garage Area 1: Centered on the garage door with just enough room to get around it on all sides, an air hockey table. Surrounding it on three side by MAME machine [or as many as you can afford; you can save money by building them all into one piece of furniture instead of individual shells].

Garage Area 2: Centered on the back wall [opposite the garage door] a pool/billiards table. Back to back with the other MAME machines, more MAME machines. Opposite those the Sound System/CD Jukebox/Networked MP3 Player and vending machines [available at Sam's Club, Costco, and like] or frig and lockable cupboard. This would also be a good place for a wet bar and a tap or two or maybe a keggerator. In the center of the room, facing the garage door, seating [couch and lazy boys] and put a video projector in the above the pool table, use the door to project on [may need a screen to attach on it], in front of the seating a custom coffee table that holds all of your console gaming systems, and of course surround sound and a DVD player. The reason for the seating to be facing the door is for summer cookouts and neighbor watching.

In the spirit of keeping costs down I was thinking using smaller tv for monitors if you could get tv out on motherboard. The other thing I was thinking was putting OS, MAME, and 1 or 2 ROMS on a CD. This would allow harddriveless machines. Also building your own controlers would keep cost down I think, although I understand that they are inferior usually, so maybe this would be a place to splurge.

Am I forgetting anything? Well maybe the 802.11b network and X11 style automation for controling the sterio, lighting, and power. Lastly, climate. An air purifier and heat/air conditioning would be nice, but insulation might be a problem.

    Aaah! Dreams....

  8. ex-UPS Employee's Response on How Not To Ship Computers · · Score: 3, Interesting

Would be nice to hear from any UPS employees reading this about what could have led to the damage jutus illustrates.

I worked for UPS in West Michigan for about a year [1999-2000]. One of my jobs was to unload a semi full of IBM desktops, thinkpads, NEC monitors, and HP printers and scanners [some other computer items] every night. This ment hundreds of desktops went through my hands in the matter of 1 hour or less [my shift was only 4 hours]. Although they were not handled with kid gloves, I never saw one that ended up like that. Trust me when I tell you that if that had come through our site we would've heard about it from our managers.

However, I have seen pacakages this bad or worse. It happens. The logistics of moving insane amounts of packages in short periods of time mean that problems are bound to arise. Plus there is a serious human factor involved. Tired, hurried, inexperienced, or lazy workers can cause this sort of thing. Also managers directly effect the quality of the work being done. UPS has the training to properly handle packages out there, but like anywhere, it's up to the workers and managers to implement.

I can't say much about claims, other than that they tell us the amounts that they pay out every year and its hefty.

As to what could've led to this, any number of things. A bad wall [imagine a giant game of tetris in a semi] could have done it, a jam in a chute, it could've gotten caught on the belt, or even a mad worker [it happens, fast food workers spit in your burger too]. Another possiblity is that heavy packages [over 70#s] were sent too early on the belt and crushed the pachages. Heavy packages are saved until the end of the night to try and prevent this.

One last thing November and December are the times of the year to be extra careful about packaging and the like. The numbers of packages that are handled during these times of the year increase significantly.
