  1. Bzzzt, try again on Mandrake 8.1 Released · · Score: 1

I just installed Mandrake 8.1 Release Candidate two days ago. I don't know if your post is a troll, or just sadly misinformed. I'll take the bait...

This distro might work ok on your 1ghz 512mb pc, but 8.0 ran like crap on my 128mb P200mmx.

That's one of the risks you run of keeping an old computer. I just upgraded from a P166 to a P2-350; I find the Mandrake's speed to be more than adequate on the P2, but I never would have installed it on the P166. More than adequate means that it will be years before I will need to upgrade my hardware.

Call me a hacker, but not having the standard BSD unix tools by default really annoys me to no end ( ftp, telnet, and many others were not installed without individual package selection ).

I too was suprised to find telnet missing, but I understand the rational behind weaning users away from unsafe tools. Besides you say that you have a set of rpm hand selected on installation. Well, whose fault is it then that you forgot to install telnet and ftp?

All of this emulating m$ makes me want to go BSD.

That's funny, I just come from planet BSD. I enherited a new computer, replacing my aging beast that's been running FreeBSD for the past 6 years. I would have stayed with FreeBSD but getting X to work with an nVidia card was a joyless hell.

Don't get me wrong, I am a freebsd enthusiast. Even if I end up being a debian user, I will sorely miss the ports system. But for me, a newbie Linux user, Mandrake has a strong appeal. It works. And it works now on my hardware, without days of fidgeting. My printer works, my video drivers are installed, my sound card was auto-detected. If that's what you mean by emulating Microsoft, bring it on.

I'm assuming that there wouldn't be any services running during the install/upgrade, and no listening ports, so my guess is that I'd be relatively safe during the process, but I want to be sure.

I have relied on cvsup; make world for so long I'm not too sure what goes on with a fresh install. I can only guess that you would be safe using an ftp upgrade/install, I'm not sure exactly what is on the bootdisk. Sorry.

If you have a freebsd machine inside of the firewall you can use that to grab the latest sources and run make buildworld. Some pointers can be found here. That would allow highest security and the least downtime.

  3. Re:FTP upgrade on FreeBSD 4.4-RELEASE Is Ready · · Score: 1

cvsup is your answer. It grabs the newest sources, and then you can compile them and install them on your own with make world. It saves bandwidth and is pretty cool in general.

A change in your firewall rules to allow cvsup will not affect your security.

Wrong! I have complete control over my intellectual property in the open source software that I have written. With that control I have chosen to allow other to use it as they see fit. That makes me much happier than a few dollars.

I have no control over the closed source stuff I write to pay the bills. My employer controls that. They use that control to restrict the freedom of the purchasers of that software.

I think what Derek Burney actually means is that open source software removes his ability to extort money from his user base.

No, it doesn't run on FreeBSD, so I haven't used it at all. That's worth a laugh or two. NT used to run on PPC, Alpha and MIPS R4x00. Used to. All these platforms were dropped for financial reasons (no sales), but now there are some serious technical chalenges to port them back. Don't think that MS could do it in a quarter, or even a year. How is 64bit Win2000 coming? How about Win2k for Itanium?

MS Office really is the trump card. Perhaps the recent announcement was a sign that Apple has indicated to MS that it will not release OSX on intel for some time.

A broader point is that mouthwash in general is a bad idea perpetrated on North American culture by years of FUD advertising.

Hmmm, what about anti-persperant, cars that go 160mph, sport utility vehicles, cigarettes? If it weren't for the need to preen our plumage, what whould we be doing with all our time? But you do have a point.

Regularly washing your mouth out with any disinfectant strong enough to kill bacteria is nothing more than a recipe for throat cancer. Hydrogen peroxide (in useful concentration) is particularly bad in that molecular oxygen is such a dangerous oxidant in the body.

I had never actually thought of it that way. I use it sparingly but I can't stop, I'd miss that clean feeling it leaves in my mouth (without the strong flavor that mouthwash leaves). It's especially handy on the nights that I get to make some time with the girlfriend :)

Well, this is completely off topic now, my apologies. Thanks for the thoughtful reply!

Drinking H202 is a bad idea. It's a great disinfectant, but there are all sorts of bacteria in your digestive system that you need to process and digest your food. Drinking hydrogen peroxide will kill all of it if you drink enough.

I use a diluted H2O2 solution as mouthwash, it does a much better job than most things like Listerine without out the awful taste. But if you accidentally swallow some, watch out for diarrhea.

Don't do that to yourself. Pay no attention to that bunk theory.
