    The differences are:

    1. Apple never marketed the IPad as running MacOS RT or anything resembling MacOS.

    2. Apple doesn't market one tablet running MacOS and another tablet running iOS that look and operate the same but are incompatible.

    So there is only one person in the whole world qualified to add value to FreeBSD? I thought one of the benefits on open source software was that anyone could take it, modify it, and improve it? Would Linux die if Linus decided not to contribute anymore?

    So which Android companies are doing well besides Samsung? Companies are in business to make a profit - not increase market share. As far as Android doing well on China, that may very well be the case, but it does Google no good when a company uses its own fork of Android and uses no Google services like most of the Chinese companies do.

    Says that Sony's mobile division continues to lose money.

    Google's mobile division includes Motorola Mobility and it hasn't seen a profit in years and Google is having to spend more money on layoffs.

    RIM is losing money.

    Nokia is losing money

    LG is losing money.

    Do you have a link for ZTE and Huawei's financials?

    Even Google said that 2/3rds of their mobile profit comes from ios and they pay Apple $100 million a year to be the default search engine on all of their devices.

    Welcome to the world of cell phones. Only three companies are making any money selling phones - Apple, Samsung, and HTC with Apple making 2/3rds of the profit, HTC making 1%, and Samsung making the rest.

    "Market share" doesn't pay the bills - money does.

    Apple makes 66% of all mobile phone profits with HTC making 1% and Samsung making the rest. The aim of a profit seeking corporation is to make a profit.

    What good is market share if you are losing money? Even Google admitted that 66% of their mobile traffic come from iOS devices. After spending 12 billion on the money losing Motorola, even Google hasn't made a profit on Android yet.

    Right, because Android has been so profitable for OEMs like Motorola, LG, Sony Ericson, etc.

    None of the major Android manufacturers are making a profit but Samsung and HTC - barely.

    If you mean by "kill themselves" being the most profitable computer maker (Yes, just their computer business).

    Let's look at the top 5 worldwide computer makers....

    1. HP's computer business is making so little money that they were trying to get rid of it.

    2. Dell is seeing decreasing profit every year.

    3. Lenovo always teetering between profit and loss

    4. Asus hasn't done well since the netbook fad died.

    Apple's Mac business is more profitable than any other PC manufacturers.

    1. Slashdot Wisdom (tm) has been saying the same thing since the iPod was introduced. How has that been working out so far?

    2. What profits? Have you seen the profit or lack there of in their PSG group?

    3. So what other company has created 3 multi billion lines of businesses in the last decade? Slashdot wisdom said that Apple would never follow up the iPod success. Then they said the same thing after the iPhone and now they are saying the same after the iPad.

    Google Voice, YouTube, Chrome, Gmail, and Earth are already in the App Store. There are more navigation products in the App Store than you can shake a stick at. Why would Maps be any different.

    HP is the top selling PC manufacturer in the world so they have "market share", but they were trying to get rid of thier PC division.

    So question, which Android manufacturer do you expect to dethrone Apple as the worlds most valuable company?

    Google is free to write an app, put it on the app store, and register a custom URL on iOS so that when you click on it from a website it opens Google maps.

    If you are driving you might appreciate having spoken turn by turn directions -- something that wasn't allowed with Google map data.

And it looks like it worked, with people like you thinking profits mean everything. Check the stock market reaction to earnings and you'll know why it is misleading."

    Amazon has been in business since 1994. How many more years will Amazon be "re-invsesting profits" for growth?

    In 1997, Apple was nearly bankrupt, and now it has $100 billion in the bank. Which company has done better?

    So who does marketshare matter to?

    The OEMs who are all losing money except for Samsung and HTC (barely?)

    Google? Who according to there own testimony before Congress get 66% of their mobile profits from iOS devices? And then spent two years worth of their net income to buy the money-losing Motorola Mobility?

    The third party developers who get an average only a quarter for every dollar on Android compared to Apple?

    Web advertisers where iOS traffic is 4x that of Android traffic?
