A Layer 2 device is not IP aware, perhaps you meant "broadcast domain"?
Yes, you are correct, but I was going for a simple explanation and didn't want to confuse things any more. And most of the time a single IP Subnet is also a single broadcast domain.
Are you sure? The Catalyst 6000 series does Layer 3 but is still classed as a switch
Yes, I sell, configure and support them everyday. The 6000 family are switches. Over the last 10 years or so, routing functions have moved into switching hardware and we now have "layer 3 switches". Forget that it is one box, the switching and routing functions are logically separate and still follow the same rules as stand alone devices, but by running them on the same hardware you can get performance and features that are not possible on separate physical devices.
Disclaimer- I work for Cisco as an Entrprise Sales Engineer
Lets clear a few terms up first- Switch- Handles moving packets between endpoints on a single IP Subnet (layer 2 Device)
Router- Moves packets between different IP Subnets (Layer 3 Device)
Firewall- Applies security rules to routed packets
While the line is blurring physically between theses functions, as alot of switches can route and routers can switch, the logical functions are still the same. Your Standard Linksys/Dlink/netgear is a switch/router/firewall combined.
The AXP platform is a module that fits into our ISR router family, NOT into any switches.
Yes, the space in a router is valuable, that is exactly why companies want to get as much value as possible out of it. Most companies are looking for ways to consolidate and cetralize to reduce costs and ease management while adding features and functionality. Virtualization is the buzzword of the day.
Applications- Think about a company that has 200 remote offices that each have a server, if that server could be collapsed into a router blade (in combination with some other cisco technology like WAAS, that is possible) you reduce management, hardware and maintenance costs, electricity costs (green is also the word of the day) and provide the necessary services integrated into the heart of the network. Pretty cool.
It may be a little bit of "If you build it, they will come" so we built it, now let the programmers loose, change the game and build something cool.
I work for a network consulting firm and we have several maintenance contracts with customers, so we have to take care of their networks when they go down. Our system is this- we have about 5 senior engineers and 8 techs. Each week one tech is the primary contact with one of the engineers backing him up. The primary get paid $100 each week he is on call and the backup get $50 plus any time they are on a call. The techs are hourly, so they get time+1/2, the salaried engineers get straight time, even if it is over 40 hours for the week.
Patent Application for a "Brain"

Description
A computational device based on a linked series of single celled organic devices (furthermore called Neurons*). The neurons will communicate with each other via an electrochemical process using various natural chemicals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride and caffiene when overclocking is necessary. Neurons can create an unlimited series of unique interconnections, creating "Memory**". Memory will allow the device to learn and recall information for as long as the neurons involved in the specific memory are still functioning properly and have not been "Burned out". The neurons can also perform dynamic reconfigurations resulting in "Thinking***". The design of this device is designed to be scaled from the size of a garden pea up to very large. The device is designed to be installed in unlimited variations of a "Body****" without modification.
Research Information
In research for my patent application I have not found any official paperwork that may indicate that my design has been previously patented. I have contacted several experts that seem to indicate that a person named "GOD" invented and installed a similar device in "Every human being". As an Atheist, I have a hard time believing in this "GOD" person, and despite several emails, visits to several of his "houses", as well as just randomly screaming at the sky, he has yet to contact me regarding this matter. I have also had several scientists backup my assertion in "Evolution" of the "Brain". The "Brain" has been in use in primitive forms for millions of years. I do not assert that this patent should cover those "Brains" created previous to my patent application. My "Brain" is an improvement on those previous "Brains". My intention when this patent is approved, is to install the first model in my "Child[3]" via the "Pregnancy[1]" and "Birth[2]" Process. I will also oversee the installation of this "Brain" into as many "Children[3]" as possible from this point forward.

and the previous ones from the sony president should be interpreted as "we will fight to protect our HUGE INCOMES". Most of these artists make millions of dollars a year, are they really going to starve because os Napster?? I think not. This is part of the reason Napster is so popular with poor college kids, They have to pay $12-$15 per cd so that Metallica can buy a new private jet and party with Hot Models. I know it pisses me off too. I would rather see Metallica make about $200K/year and my kids schoolteachers or the cop that puts his life on the line everyday make $400K. I think musicians would still produce music if they could only make $200,000/year. I am willing to pay for music, just not $1+ per song, take the bad songs out of the equation and Im paying like $3-$5 per good song on a CD. I would rather pay my $1 and download only the ones I like.
