  1. Oh please, quit yer bitchin! on Home Sweet Sweatshop · · Score: 1

What I wouldn't give to be making the kind of money you've made, all from home where I could spend time with my kids whenever I felt the urge.

Instead I commute 100 miles a day to some mudhole in the middle of nowhere so I can make $40-$50K if I bust my butt, work in the dusty heat or snowy cold. Sometimes I'm out there more than 18 hours and drive back on slick roads in my sleep.

Do I bitch and whine? No. Not until I hear someone who works from home complain about the commute.

Man, you have a serious attitude problem, check with your doctor and see if you can get your dosage increased or something.

Remember the guy who built computers in his garage? He let his buddy sell him out and everyone was convinced that it was fad. A few short years later Woz cashed out. Guess what, he still contributes to the company, to society, and to his bank account. You gonna fault him too?

And anyone who thought they were gonna get something, anything (fame and fortune) by "sending in stuff, and being the community" is a bigger idiot than you. You gotta be creative and you gotta put forth the effort......hmmmm, kinda like these guys did with /.

Ya, it sux that I didn't think of it first. Oh well, I'm gonna write TKA someday and make my own fortune.

    Congrats guys!

That's wonderful. I still don't see this being a real common thing.

I thought this was comparing Linux and NT on intel hardware for common applications. The memory argument starts to head into the area of Intel, Sun, SGI/Cray which I think was beyond the intent.

From what I know, Linux does make the most of the Intel hardware.

Anyone running the kind of application that requires that kind of memory is going to be running non-intel hardware anyway, like you are.

Those have got to be some pretty hard hitting servers. I know we've got some hard working Sun boxes at work be even they don't have that much memory.

You've got to admit tho that even for active servers on Intel hardware, 2+GB is rare.

Is this something that a lot of people need to be concerned with? I'm no expert but somehow I get the feeling that something like 99.9999999% of Linux, NT, Warp, Solaris, and other users are running far less than 2GB of memory anyway.

This is kind of like the old Beowolf arguments. I just don't see a lot of people doing that so why use it as a comparason of operating systems.

  8. Just call it Linux on "GNU/Linux" vs. "Linux" · · Score: 1

I just don't get it. The whole idea of GNU/Linux escapes me. I thought Linux was developed to fill in until GNU/Hurd was developed. So you have Linux and you don't have GNU/Hurd. Why is that so hard?

I can't seem to find the GNU distribution anyway so I'm just going to continue to use RedHat and call it Bob.

"A big practical disadvantage of Linux is that there
isn't much application software for it. But that's because so few
    people use it."

This goes to show that it's still too hard for the average bonehead to get Linux online quickly. Anyone who bothers to get on the net and surf for apps knows there is plenty of great stuff out there for Linux.

Oh, isn't it Xwindow and not Xwindows?
