I've worked extensively with Borland's CLX. Delphi 6 (Windows) and Kylix 2 (Linux) support this cross-platform language. Supposedly you are supposed to have a single source code base that is cross platform. There are a few major problems with this: 1. CLX itself and its structure has MANY bugs and memory leaks. In all fairness CLX is a first generation language but it is equivalent to an alpha test edition. I recall reading a post in borland.public.delphi.clx.using where someone had open and closed a blank form about 100 times and generated a 6 megabyte memory hole. 2. CLX isn't well supported by Borland. I wonder if they are planning to drop support for CLX altogether. Kylix 2 came out well less than a year than Kylix 1 and included some fixes for CLX. Users were pretty steamed because Borland never released CLX fixes for Kylix 1. K2 was really a bug fix release of K1 and Borland wanted people to pay for the updates. Borland recently released service pack #2 for Delphi 6 but still there are no CLX fixes. Borland also maintains freeclx.sourceforge.net which is supposed to be a community effort to improve CLX. That site is basically dead despite the fact people actually submitted bug reports at one time. 3. Applications written with CLX require a very large dynamic runtime library QTINTF.DLL or.SO. This file is several megs compressed. So if your app was previously 500k its now 3.5 megs and this can be a tremendous strain on your web server and bandwith usage.
I think open source is a great idea just like free love but I don't think it will ever really succeed. I think that a lot of open source sites are headed in the same direction as Corel's. The problem you can't make money off of open source. You can't survive in a capitalist society if you can't make money.
My theory about open source is that Linux in particular is being privately funded by IBM, Sun, AOL and other big companies with the sole intention of breaking up Microsoft. I have no doubt that Linux will be sucessful in eventually becoming the predominant desktop OS. After all, how can Microsoft even with it's monopoly power compete with a product that is free that has similar or better performance?
I'm an avid Star Trek fan and I'd like to propose a new Trek Race: The Litigants. Picture this non-violent species with me. They are a sort of compromise in between the Pherengi and the Borg. The whole society is based around the courtroom. They fly around the Galaxy and use the legal systems of other races to assimilate intellectual property. They wear powdered wigs and carry quill pens. Every form of communication is a legal negotiation. Their cultural rituals like marriage are all a series of legal wranglings between man and woman. This race never attacks races through weapons. They attack only through legal manuevering sort of like the ACLU.
Falling rocks from the sky? Is this the Art Bell show or something? I wonder if we could target the./ effect towards Art's web site so he could experience a falling web server.
Reading stories like this make you wish Paul Revere would ride again. Or how about the Boston CD party? It's funny how the same lawyers which rally against Microsoft are the same ones that bandy the DMCA about like the bible...
Come on! I want a return to the Apple ][ days there were companies like Central Point Software and Locksmith who were in the business of making programs to circumvent copy protection.
What about the Deluxe Option Board? Remember that, it replaced your floppy drive and could be used to copy any PC or Apple ][ game.
That was a great post. You hit the nail on the head with that one. All the insiders I talk to say XP is nothing more than a release for revenue generation. They say XP is nothing more than 2K with fluff. Everything I read says XP uses more resources and makes your system run slower.
I think I'm drawing a line in the sand on XP. I'm refusing to install it. I'm sticking with 2K.
Now that the licensing scandal is over, maybe Borland can find time to focus their efforts on getting rid of all the bugs in Kylix/CLX. I've used them for some time and have been pretty frustrated. Checkout freeclx.sourceforge.net. That's the repository where CLX (Kylix's programming language) is maintained. There haven't been updates in weeks. Nobody even bothers to submit bug reports there since they are ignored.
Scroll back to the Slashdot story a few days ago that covered a similar topic. The bottom line here is you don't have a college degree. You may be good at what you do, but you aren't well rounded and don't have the important life skills someone who graduated from college would have. You know what my advice is!
I wonder seriously what happened in that case. A few years back, 3DFX sued a bunch of kids who were making "glide wrappers" for use with a N64 emulator. 3DFX took so much negative publicity it ruined their company. I'd pay money to see the reaction the lawyers at K&L are having to the massive amounts of telephone calls and e-mails they must be receiving.
On a related note, Slashdot needs more FC style posts!!!

I think that sounds like a lost business cause. My company created a similar product but there was no market. Java seems like its on its way out. Anybody else have any comments?
I wrote and mass distributed a cross-platform application that runs on both on Windows and Linux. The problem with Kylix and Delphi 6 is that CLX is full of serious bugs. Borland maintains the CLX programming library on freeclx.sourceforge.net but as you can see from browsing the CVS repository, there have been no updates in months. Borland also lacks any decent bug tracking system on its website. Does anyone else want to comment on there experiences with CLX?
Don't get me wrong, I think Linus is a great guy but his grammar stinks. In the quotes, he keeps referring to Microsoft as "it". So the big difference between Linux and Windows are things like grammar, appearance, and user friendliness. Once guys like Linus get their grammar right and start putting similar attention to detail in Linux, Microsoft is doomed.
I worked for a congressman. Like the other posters said, we received so many communications from constituents that it was impossible to handle each one. Understandably e-mails are never read because of the frequent abuses of e-mail. Other communications like snail mail and faxes are briefly read. These communications are tallied and presented to the congressman. For example if 5000 separate individuals write unique letters complaining about Microsoft this is identified as something constituents are concerned about that might need addressed. There are very few mails that get personalized responses such as people needing help with IRS problems, etc.
So the moral of this story is if you want your opinion to matter, snail mail a well thought out, typewritten and signed letter to your congressman!
Don't you guys think it is obvious that Linux is the operating system of the future? Linux has really only been mainstream for 1-2 years. Windows has been mainstream for nearly a decade. It's going to take another year or two for Linux to really cut into sales of Windows I think. Microsoft does not stand a chance. How can they compete against something that is better and FREE?
It just like Netscape V. IE all over again except now Gates et al are on the receiving end.

You know, where the inside is bigger than the outside? Just like the TARDIS? What about the sonic screwdriver? You need one of those.
I'm really concerned about this. Will +O op status transfer to other servers???

I don't like to read anything but the -1 posts. Does anyone else feel this way? Is there a way to filter everything but the -1 posts out?
Is it just me or is Slashdot stories starting to sound like they come from the liberal news media?
All this harping on "secret courts" etc.
