  5. MSFT vs. Google marketing strat on Microsoft Wants to Take on Google · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Microsoft could do one of several things:
    1. Simply redirect google.com to microsoft.com's search tool
    2. IE could pop up a dialog saying google.com was insecure and do you want to continue
    3. Add Microsoft search site to IE search icon
    4. Replace 404 not found with Microsoft Search site

  6. Apple's business model on Beige Box Apple Clone? · · Score: 2, Interesting

What is so bad about clones? I don't believe there is any money to be made from hardware sales. The profit margin is too small. Apple should follow in Microsoft's footsteps and make an OS only. They should allow the hardware manufacturers to worry about the chips and motherboards. Can you imagine if Apple released an version of their OS that could run on standard Intel/AMD chips? They would be competing head to head with Microsoft for market share. Apple's market share right now is so small there is no way it could shrink. I think if the cost of entry (expensive, slow proprietary Apple brand hardware) for switching to Apple's OS was cheap, many more people would be willing to give it a shot.

  8. Apple compared to North Korea on Apple Terminates Safari Seed Program · · Score: -1, Flamebait

I think Apple has a lot of similarities to North Korea. Both are radical, extremist and are completely inflexible. Both like to issue unilateral proclamations to its citizens in the case of North Korea and its customers and resellers in the case of Apple. Colorful characters make up the leadership for both organizations. The leader of North Korea is Kim who runs around wearing sunglasses. The leader of Apple is Steve Jobs who sees himself as a diety preaching Apple like a religion. Geographically and politically, North Korea isolates itself from the rest of the world. Similarly Apple has isolated itself from the entire information technology industry.

  9. I remeber the planet IRATA on Salon on M.U.L.E Creator Dani Bunten · · Score: 4, Interesting

M.U.L.E. was a great game. I remember spending many an afternoon at my friends house playing this game on the C64 about 10-15 years ago. I liked it so much I purchased it for the original Nintendo. The Nintendo version never recaptured the original glory.

I find myself always searching for remakes of these classics like M.U.L.E., Mail Order Monsters, Star Flight etc. Eletronic Arts should remake those games. I'm sick of all these MMORPG's. There is something to be said about the games you could play in an hour and be done with.

BTW, IRATA spelled backwards is ATARI!

  10. Palm OS Devices on Technologies that Have Exceeded Their Expectations? · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'd have to put Palm OS devices in this category. I have had a Handspring Visor Deluxe for nearly 3 years now. It's black and white. The are no fancy graphics or sounds. However it keeps a mean phone list, address book and calendar. As a Physician, I like the third party software that is a handy quick reference for pharmaceutical dosing information. I have absolutely no reason to upgrade to anything better.

  14. Collusion and cross-licensing of bogus patents on NCR Patents the Internet · · Score: 1

Suppose several companies with bogus patents get together and cross-license the patients:

For example, AT&T license the use of the internet to Southwestern Bell and Amazon. Southwestern Bell turns around and licenses the use of frames to AT&T and Amazon. Finally, Amazon licenses the use of mouse clicking on web pages to the other companies.

Now all the companies can go to court and use these license agreements as evidence their patients are valid.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this happen before?

  15. Disgruntled Westwood customer on Command and Conquer Generals Released · · Score: 1

I've been a Westwood C&C fan for a long time. I think I've purchased every C&C game until now. I've owned C&C for Windows, C&C Gold, Red Alert, Tiberium Dawn, Red Alert 2, Sole Survivor and even Renegade. I've decided not to buy Generals. Over the years I've noticed a pattern where Westwood releases a game and then seems to abandon support it. Take Renegade for example, they released 1 or 2 updates for the game. Widespread cheating and exploitation of bugs have made the game unplayable. Customers provide detailed bug reports in their forums and WW seems to just ignore them. Compare this to something like Blizzard's Diablo II. Blizzard still actively supports Diablo II even though it is probably 3 years (?) old now and still makes new releases. There used to be a website www.westwoodexposed.com where a bunch of radicals with a similar opinion posted a whole bunch of anti-WW rhetoric.

Waterproof books sounds great if you want to sell your books back at the end of the year to the school bookstore.
