What about networks like www.pulltheplug.com (and soon www.inflexible.net [send us machines!!]) that allow you to legally hack machines and hold to to them for as long as you can? You can't deny the education that can be gained from using computers in a way the programmer hadn't intended. Security is a very nessary thing and sometimes the best way to learn it is to break it.

Now it sounds like this kid used something he learned on his own, not some pre-packaged script that doesn't teach him anything. There is a world of difference between breaking security for knowledge and breaking it for malious or other such intents. This kid should be rewarded for using his brain, something public schools definately frown upon. (I had a similar exprience at my school, and it seems that the story is the same. The administrators cannot see through their ignorance to realize what this kid had really done.)

Classic cars rock. They're smoother than new cars, they're bigger than new cars and they even smell better than new cars. They're faster than new cars and above all, they're fun to work on. Although they need more work and attention than new years, they deserve it. A geek wouldn't be content with windows, why should one be content with a car that can't be hacked a bit?

I'm afraid i'll have a bit of a delimmia for the rest of my life... After driving a car like mine as my first car, i'll never be content with anything else.

I'm very glad that the US is ready, but let us hope our computers aren't persuaded into war by foriegn countries. (Peer pressure is damn tough)

As you see, we are doomed to live our lives out carefully plodding our steps as to not piss off our computers. If we screw things up, the systems we have so painstakingly created might get pissed off and kill us all. Who knows, maybe the BSoD is just a computer poking fun with the user to relieve stress... Hi John!

Seeing how the /. people were nice enough to give you an interview, I see it as a perfect oppurtunity to ask you some questions i've had:

What was contained in the "Knowledge Base" that you supposedly shared with government agents?

A few months back, when I still had respect for you and your friend Carolyn, I came home to see you call the administrator for the happyhacker network, and have him take my computer (otter) off the network for actions of the users on IRC. (Log of the event.) To this day, I can not understand what makes you think it's right to silence the thoughts of others through the use of censorship. That was _my_ machine. The question I'm trying to ask is this: Why do you immediately censor all the bad karma focused towards you, why have you never tried to refute the "accusations" with facts?

I think I'm only allowed one question per post, so i'll stop with two. NOTE: I'd really like to see this post chosen because of the personal expriences i've been unfortunate enough to have. But don't pick it if you can't find something better.

The point i'm trying to make is:
Do want you want to do, it doesn't matter what others think.

I've had friends that have picked up some hot chicks, just by doing what rob explained. The secret is treating them like any other person but still giving them respect.

I don't know if they give you the source when you purchase it, but at the price they charge (~$10k+) i don't think i'll find out.

I would think that if they modified a linux kernel, they would have to release the source. (Don't flame me as i haven't really read up on the liscences and i'm just expressing my opinion.)

Yup, that's right, a big list of people involved with hacking that JP shares with the feds.

Anyhoo, tg0d (www.tg0d.org) is going to be hosting something like this of it's own. We aren't gonna keep a log of people's IP's or anything like that. And if you root a box, it's your as long as you can defend it for. Our games aren't up yet, but we have 5 boxes that are schulded to go up soon. So bookmark www.tg0d.org and come back later for more info.

He has gone too far this time and I have a feeling that popular opinion about him and his buddy, Carolyn Meinel, are about to change. Carolyn Meinel. Do not trust a word she says. She, like JP, will say anything to get you to do what she wants you to. I will not go into full detail about her, but if you have not heard of her before, run far far away. (P.S. For all newbies wanting to learn about security, there will be an open wargame at www.tg0d.org and help will be provided for those who need it.)
