You don't need to work with NSI to get your domain moved to another registrar. I personally use www.tiernetworking.com which is a tucows OpenSRS reseller to transfer my domain over. When you do it will email the administrative contact with a URL you must go to to approve the transfer.

  4. My Experiences on On Starting a Successful ISP? · · Score: 2

I work for a small company who, two years ago, had a lot of extra cash and were expanding their business. One of those expansions was in the ISP area.

They saw money to be made, but had a guy who didn't have the knowledge or experience start it. That was their first mistake, they should have gone with me from the beginning, but I didn't take over until 5 months later after they fired the previous guy because nothing ever worked right.

Poor decision after poor decision was made with this guy in charge. First of all, the purchase of a $15k PIX firewall, in spite of my many arguements against it. Simply no need. Start small. Another horrid purchase was the purchase of 2 $40,000 servers to handle everything, running NT4. 4 or 5 $1k servers running ANY OS would have been MORE than plenty, and a much better solution than 2 mega-servers. This was all done due to lack of experience and research.

Anyway - Their idea was to cater towards the businesses, for web hosting and ISDN dial-up. They didn't want the large user base of cheap home-user dial-ups. And they didn't want the volume of basic $20/month websites. They believed they could charge $50/month, and offer the same service as $20/month services. Why? Because they rented space at a high-tech computer room. Problem was, no one really cared, and few were willing to put out the extra money. I believe this whole business idea to be a mistake, volume is priority #1 in this area.

Another mistake was using Windows NT. Sure I think an ISP should have 1 or 2 Windows machines running Microsoft technologies, such as ASP and MSSQL, for those who request that. But basic services such as POP, IMAP, SMTP, DNS, RADIUS, and well anything possible really, should be run on a *nix environment. I'm a FreeBSD advocate myself, but Linux would probably be a good solutions as well.

Anyway, nothing really deep here, just a few basic things I've gathered over the years. One more thing I will say though, I have NEVER regretted our decision to go Cisco exclusively. There hasn't been anything I've needed our routers/switches to do that I haven't been able to do with our Cisco products. They certinally cost, but in my opinion, you certinally get what you pay for.

claims that the Internet's routing tables are ballooning in size and within a couple of years "equipment won't have enough processor power and memory to handle them."

Am I the only one who thinks it foolish to try and predict the kind of processor power we will have in a couple years? A couple years ago, the routers available probably wouldn't have been up to par with the traffic the internet currently generates. I'm no expert though...

and the PS2 will have had a one year headstart

Pardon my ignorance, but PS2 will have had a one year head start on what? The dreamcast? No. Is Taco referring to the upcoming Nintendo system?

The same situation happene d with the original PS and the N64. And as far as I know, the N64 seemed to do just fine?
There aren't as many games for it as the PS, sadly. But I definatly preferred it over the PS, partly because it was a cartridge game, which partly explains why there aren't as many games for it. Unfortunatly cartridges are going out of style. I realize CD/DVD's are far superior than cartridges in capacity, but I always hated waiting for the PS to load the games and the levels and such. Not to mention the durability of the cartridge vs. the CD...
Anyway, I'm probably just biased, because Zelda is my all time favorite game period, and I never really liked the FF series.
I just bought the N64 for Zelda, so I guess if there's a game on the PS2 I want, I'll buy it too...

Define a "click", though? I believe this to already be patented by Amazon's 1-click shopping patent. If only 1 click is involved, you may run into trouble. I thought about doing what I would consider "half-click shopping", where the user is only required to press down on the mouse to purchase an item (and if they let up, then Amazon is THIER problem, not mine) but all definitions for "click" I could find did not specify pressing both down, and then up.

You could also do "21+N*1 click shopping". 21 clicks total are required to activate the 21+N*1-click shopping feature for that user, and after that, they can click once on the item they want and it will be sent to their door. N being the number of items they choose to purchase using this feature...

The company I work for (CompuTech Business Solutions, http://www.ctbsonline.com) recently had me and another guy working on a web-based help-desk system, written in ASP using MS SQL (if I had my way it'd been PHP/MySQL, but oh well) The idea is, users call our 800# and the guy who answers the phone (who doubles as our computer room operator) enters the info into the database w/the web interface and assigns it to the appropriate associate. It assigns an ID to that task, that we give to the customer so they can track it on our website, it also emails that associate w/the URL and with the info on the call. Among other things. Along with, of course, a web-based interface for the user to enter a call himself (rather than calling help desk number) It's really nice, ties into our billing database, and our time-tracking database, among other nice features. It was really worth the time the two of us spent creating it. If anyone's interested in such a system email me, I'm sure we could work out a very nice price (considering we never considered selling the system before...)
