HUH? What is illegal in the US?
Assuming allofmp3 has a legal right to distribute the music (if they don't then I agree with you 100% that the whole thing is a time bomb), the only issue at hand is the legality of that music leaving Russia and entering into the US. Plain and simple.
I have no idea what rights or geographical limitations anyone has for distributing anything but that dispute or difference between two distributors of the same copyrighted work are not going to be putting you in jail.

For the parent poster to claim to have more CDs then the average person, I find it odd to make a lifetime ARCHIVE to preserve of all of them in a format that can only be played on 3 things and not one of them, a standard audio device (boom box, car stereo, home stereos etc). When I think of that many CDs and the purpose of an archive, I do not picture a person sitting in front of the computer or walking around with an iPod and headphones as the only way for music enjoyment. If those are the only way the parent listens to music and iTunes is the only thing found useful, why bother with lossless and an archive at all.
I have no problem using any software if it fits my needs, the convertors you refence would be third party anyway, would you run those?

The case says, very clearly, that when you download something from the internet, it is necessarily reproduced in your computer's memory. Reproduction is illegal, per 17 USC 106(1) unless authorized by the copyright holder, or an exemption applies, and none do.

It is my understanding that allofmp3 IS authorized by the Russian equal to the RIAA to distibute the copyrighted works. The question is not about legal right for the the distribution of the media, it is about that media crossing country lines. If it is NOT legal to cross country lines, I belive allofmp3 would be the target of the law more then an individual using the service as the penalty for illegal distibution is far greater then the penalty for illegally purchasing. I can buy an audio cd from a country outside the US and bring it into the US legally provided it was an authorized copy like allofmp3 makes. IANAL and really do not know the legality of allofmp3 but I believe it is much more involved then what you referenced.

I hope your happy with whatever Apple releases for years to come as reconverting to something else would not be an easy task.

I will try that but isn't CloneCD present for all users? The fact that I had to uninstall it for it to work in my login and the fact that all users on the machine (my 2 kids and me) can use the virtual drive I think it would be. I could create that gaming account and limit access and privs but according to the Sims2 FAQ, you need admin access for the game (how's that for security). I actually tried to run Sims2 from one of my kids logins (power users) and I get an "unknown error" dialog box, yes very informative indeed. I will read more and browse around the cracks and copy sites. I'm sure someone will figure out a solution eventually. I actually do not play the game at all but my kids do. I bought it as a reward for help they gave me over the weekend and now I wish I would have just did all the work myself ;).

    you don't buy it until

Getting off topic here but something I will ALWAYS check for first is what copy prevention methods they use. I just got burned with Sims2. It will refuse to load if you have any "CD/DVD emulation applications installed", that means CloneCD, Nero, or Roxio installed on the computer. I am not talking trying to use the virtual CD to run the game, it will refuse to run from the original CD because it detects that software. The FAQ states to unload those applications and then play the game. I have CloneCD and Nero. I could not get the game to work unless I completely uninstalled CloneCD through control panal, not just "disable" it by removing the virtual drive option. The FAQ states there is a compatibility issue between virtual cd software and Sims2 which is COMPLETE BULLSHIT and a complete f**king lie, what they really mean is there is a chance that with those programs installed, you might be able to play the game with out the CD in the drive. I now either have to install/uninstall CloneCD all the time, sit and look at a $50 disc I purchased from EA, or wait until I can get a crack for the game I already bought. I should have just waited for the crack and not even bought the game to begin with. I tried to take the game back but of course, they refused because I opened it. I am still waiting back from EA tech support for what I can do with the game I just bought. I have a feeling I will get a canned response that it conflicts with the game or some other canned response that basically says tough shit sucker, you are out $50. What that means to me is don't buy any more games from EA, just wait for them in alt.binaries.games, you'll have a better chance of them working correctly.

The FCC has very specific rules and wording that does not allow a landlord/property owner/housing association etc.. to limit your ability to pickup and use certain pieces of the radio spectrum. I am not aware of any national laws that specific for guns or alchohol. I guess using the the radio spectrum is more of a passive activity so it was able to get through the process to become a law easier then if someone tried that that with guns on a national basis.
There are areas of the country where guns laws and sale of alchohol are more relaxed then others. These areas are not consistant either, an area in NC may not allow alchohol sales at all but you can carry a gun into the grocery store. In upstate NY, you may be able to drink all you want 24/7 but they severly limit where you can carry a gun. These rules were passed based on what society in those areas would tolerate. The nation as a whole will never equal out enough to have a one law fits all for those activities.
