>You need to emerge rsync quite a few times > during a new install to ensure you are using > the latest version of portage. I'd have to disagree here. Unless your 'emerge world' takes more than a week, it isn't likely that there will be new ebuilds out. And even in that case, it is probably a matter of a new revision of an ebuild, rather than a new version of the software.
>Under/etc/defaults/make.conf you can specify > which mirrors to use for popular ports or you > can type in the closest FreeBSD ftp site and > over-ride it for the fastest download speed. I don't know when the last time you used portage was, but you _can_ specify mirrors to use in/etc/make.conf . Furthermore, there is a script called mirrorselect ('emerge mirrorselect'), which makes finding the fastest mirrors and updating make.conf, all automatically, even easier.
I'm reading this immediately after finishing my final CS2 project, where I was required to use STL containers, and also supply a write-up explaining why I chose such containers.
The assignment itself was a bit absurd (weird, not hard) though... emulating pine on an extremely basic level, ie not really going online, not using ctrl commands, etc etc.
Oh well, at least is was satisfying to have it finished and working.
>> Even the Thinkpads, as good as they might be, are horribly ugly machines!!
My T22 is terribly offended. I happen to like the look of the ThinkPads. And if the appearance of the Apple iBooks (at least the colored ones) is right, I'll gladly be wrong!
Just looking at the inside of those intellimice are giving me the chills... The final project for my CAD class was to design all the parts and assemblies for one of those things... -shudder- I still have nightmares from that evil thing.
If I'm not mistaken, which i could very easily be, isn't the purpose of WINE to help windows developers make a transition from windows to linux via WineLib?
So maybe with better support for DirectX in wine, game developpers might use the winelib to make it more portable to linux?
is it just me, or was the section about the 'exoskeltons' for use in the army use more interesting??
i can see it now: multiple armies of geeks suited up for the holy os wars in their exoskeletons. mysteriously, the windows warriors suffer from a myserious blue blob in their optical sensors, leaving them defenseless to the prowless of the linux zealots, who can not only see perfectly fine, but are faster, stronger, and able to post to/. with a single command!
sweet, now there'll be a new t-shirt for history of technology told in t-shirts...
and just when i was about to buy a helix code... t-shirt from thinkgeek
[in case i didn't say t-shirt enough: t-shirt, t-shirt, t-shirt, t-shirt, t-shirt:-P ]
x is pronounced like a zz sound isn't it? i don't about this, i like the old name better.
when you told people you use helix code, they'd be thinking... oh, that sounds complicated and scientific, and yet somehow fascinating...
so now when you tell them your using ximian, they'd be like... what the hell are you talking about?
oh well
I was looking at the tech notes for the 9.1 update and apparently its purpose is "to support today's Mac OS 9 customers transition for tomorrow's Mac OS X customers..." but later on, it states that "The Mac OS X Public Beta and Mac OS 9.1 are not compatible. If you install Mac OS 9.1, the Classic environment in the Mac OS X Public Beta will no longer function." Is it me, or does this seem contradictory? It's intended to ease the transition to OS X from OS 9, but for those who have already changed over to the Public Beta the Classic will stop working... whatever.
Anyone tried out the apple's new iTunes yet? The radio tuner part is really cool. Unfortunately, i think that its lacking some major 'genres,' with hip-hop / rap foremost on the list... but other than that, its pretty cool:)

Other thoughts: anyone see the dragon's "lair/castle" and think "this would make a really cool Quake level"? maybe it was just me...
I was actually thinking more along the lines of diablo2... especially with all the deceased would-be rescuers, and the scatter armor and whatnot

-shrug- i dunnno, just a thought.
The client works fine for the most part using wine. (Running wine 20001222 and firstclass 5.623)

i was just checking through my logs, and noticed some ftp attempts from random sites... fortunately, the logs showed the following:
/usr/sbin/in.ftpd: No such file or directory
error:cannot execute
lol, that'll show em. why no ftpd? beats me, but its just as well.
i can see it now:
'Could not connect to main server... please try again...'

wow, the kernel compiled on my machine in under 5 mintues, as opposed to the usual 30 min to an hour. i'm impressed.
I can see the headlines now: "[Insert Website Name] gets whacked..."
Imagine the possibilies... "Microsoft gets whacked" "AOL gets whacked" etc.
