Corporate uptake is not slow Dell is. (and other OEMs) Our entire network is Dell machines. Its just easier to support hardware for a large company by purchasing from companies like Dell because if it breaks they fix it, not me. If I could buy AMD from Dell with Dell support I would. They only sell Intel.
I see what you are trying to say, but the point is that you can not expect users to understand that: "It doesn't work because it's open source". Linux is a frustrating systems to use. I've been using it for a few years and I have seen things improve dramatically but there are several things that piss me off regularly. When was the last time you tried to upgrade to a newer version of Mozilla? Have you ever tried it on Windows? What do you tell your friend who just recently switched to Suse from Windows and wants to upgrade? "OK, just DL the tarball and untar, then./configure..." He said "boot Windows and just click setup.
Mindset is good until you try to talk about reaching users who don't care and don't have the time or patience to deal with the hassle. No amount of "you need a different mindset" is going to help that. The system needs to be easier to use for the novice user. -R
So, Tell me why an isp should waste resources because someone didn't patch thier machine? Cut them off. Let the lusers figure it out for themselves. Let's help the people who are willing to help themselves.
I just upgraded to a Athlon 1400. The fan went bad and the computer locked up. I still have burns on my fingers. I got a new fan (Delta) now it sounds like a vacum cleaner but its been running great for about 4 days now. Even though the "void if removed" sticker is burnt off.
I was working for a finacial systems company a couple of years back and I was installing a Netware 4.1 server into a bank. Everyone in the bank was running client32 on Win95 but nobody had thier own username and password. Bobby was logging in as Mary Ann with her old password even though she hadn't worked there in 2 years etc. No one even knew what Novell was. We found the server in a closet under a carpet. It was an old 486 running Netware 3.12 and had been up for a almost 3 1/2 years. Then we had the argument - "No YOU reboot the thing! I'M not touching it" As far as I know it's still running today. That's a testament to a great OS.
The AMD 850 seems plenty fast at a couple of hundred $'s. Why would I want to upgrade to a 1.something gHz chip at 3 times the price? Where's the "wow"? Only Win2000 seems to need the extra horsepower.
Why are you buying servers expecting the vendor to do the work? I buy Dell servers, I put the OS on them, I support it. When the HW breaks I call Dell and they fix it. Why do I like Dell? They always fix the HW fast. The OS is my problem. BTW I have a 2400 that runs RedHat6.1 fine. No complaints.

I use Flashcom. I know DSL reports says that they are the worst of all. I can tell you that they are like the Hardee's of DSL companies. They will install EVERYWHERE. I had to go DSL because I couldn't get cable modem etc.
I made the call November of last year. After 30+ hours of on the phone on hold, I got it installed on April 4 of this year. Big trouble between services Bell says the loop is OK Flashcom says no etc...
Anyway I got 144K and its solid. I still have no email address etc. A call to tech support takes hours.
That's OK though cause they still have not billed me and I haven't payed a cent.

ITs secure and uses pgp. Oh yea the US govt is about to outlaw that. Sorry

Speakeasy is doing the same thing. I got this yesterday.
The affects of this worm are detrimental to all and we'd like to give each
member a chance to secure their machines. However, after 9/23/01,
Speakeasy's Abuse Team will be freezing the DSL circuit hooked to any
machine infected with the worm. We apologize for the inconvenience of
this, but it is imperative that we ensure our network is not assisting in
the propogation of this, or any, worm. All of us are part of a larger
community, and it really isn't cool to infect your neighbors.

This is just another good reason to get off this god-forsaken rock. I especially like the black hole disaster, now that one SUCKS!

No more T-1 to connect to the building next door. Where can I get the HW? HasH_Browns
