I had the same experience with AVG. Sluggish and not finding anything, I used Trend Micro's online housecall and found viruses. I ditched AVG for Avast and have been pleased with it so far.
I would be like to hear about the OP other ideas for firewall and malware.
Just because you could have the technology doesn't mean you need it. I don't want every FBI agent sifting through the dumb jokes colleagues send and countless viagra spam messages every five minutes. Go out and do some investigating. They don't need their own email they can read ours.
It isn't the freedom of speech that is being violated. It is our right to be free from unreasonable search and seizure without probable cause supported by oath. Check your Bill of Rights, it's number 4.
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."
Great idea now I can get rid of that five port hub under my desk so I can work on more than one pc at a time. It does need a power source though, so plan ahead and use power over ethernet, or you will need to supply power too.
I had comcast@home and they too scanned from authorized-scan1.security.home.net, but I never heard from them about the ftp, http, or mail servers that I had running. I usually had about 6-10 other legit scans a week that Winroute easily blocked or routed to the proper port on my Linux box. Since Windows was required for @home installation.

If you want stable don't put the latest and greatest kernel on your most important box.
Even most MS drones know not install the newest Win until after a service pack or two.
